Right-wing "historian" places Rosa Parks at lunch counter instead of a bus seat
David Barton, president of WallBuilders and "Social Studies Expert Reviewer" for the Texas State Board of Education, contributed this little insight to his review of the state social studies curriculum:

Civil disobedience is much more diverse (and complicated) than just the single example of Thoreau. Numerous examples show that civil disobedience has played a prominent role in initiating numerous changes throughout American history, including thorough the Boston Tea Party, Shay’s Rebellion, the Underground Railroad, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Rosa Parks at the lunch counter, etc. (Emphasis mine)

That's right, boys and girls - Rosa Parks wasn't told to move to the back of the bus. She was ordered to move on down the lunch counter, where she undoubtedly had to sit between a young D.B. Cooper and the Wizard of Oz.

Dena Sher at Americans United for Separation of Church and State gets credit for spotting this glaring error. Why is this man still drawing a paycheck from the State of Texas?

What about the editors who were suppose to go over his submission? Why didn't someone at the publishing company catch this?

Next thing, you're gonna tell us that the Germans didn't bomb Pearl Harbor. Buncha revisionist historians. Wait until Senator Blutarsky hears about this.

7. Rosa Parks probably sat a lunch counter at least once, therefore this is accurate.

Ugh. And this man fashions himself to be an expert on history.

From his company's page:

David Barton is the Founder and President of WallBuilders, a national pro-family organization that presents America's forgotten history and heroes, with an emphasis on our moral, religious and constitutional heritage....

David is the author of numerous best-selling books, with the subjects being drawn largely from his massive library of tens of thousands of original writings from the Founding Era. He also addresses well over 400 groups each year.

His exhaustive research has rendered him an expert in historical and constitutional issues and he serves as a consultant to state and federal legislators, has participated in several cases at the Supreme Court, was involved in the development of the History/Social Studies standards for states such as Texas and California, and has helped produce history textbooks now used in schools across the nation.

David was named by Time magazine as one of America's 25 most influential evangelicals, and he has received numerous national and international awards, including Who's Who in Education and DAR's highest award, the George Washington Honor Medal.

9. Translation
"His exhaustive research has rendered him an expert . . ." In other words, he has bestowed the status of "expert" on himself, because he can't get through an accredited course of study from a legitimate institute of higher education.

11. I'll be the one to say it: Credit for even knowing her name and century.
I'll give him credit for being somewhat close.

The exact circumstance is obviously wrong but at least he knows her name and apparently roughly what decade this occurred in.

The injustice in both the lunch counter and the bus was the same: segregation.

So he screwed up on the specific circumstance - he's still apparently more aware and enlightened than 90% of his R/W friends.
