Virginia Dog Found in Oklahoma 10 Years After Disappearing
Wow, the stories this old boy would tell, if only he could talk.

Brindle: Now and then

Volunteers to reunite dog with owner

"FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- A dog missing from northern Virginia for a decade may soon be reunited with his owner after showing up in Oklahoma.

Tristan Rohde, 8, her family found Brindle under a bush in their Lawton, Okla., neighborhood a couple of weeks ago -- more than 1,300 miles from where he disappeared. The Rohdes thought Brindle was dead, but when he lifted his head, Tristan decided to take him in.

"If I didn't, then he would just be sitting there right now with no family, no friends, no nothing," she said.

The Rohdes took Brindle, who was near death, to a veterinarian who found a microchip with tracking information under Brindle's skin..."

1. Amazing. The old guy is near the end, but it will be a quality end.
All the best, Brindle.

6. "Wow, the stories this old boy would tell, if only he could talk."
If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell,
About Della and the Dealer and the dog as well.
But the cat was cool,
And he never said a mumblin' word.

7. I dislike the owner's attitude. - UPDATE
I read between the lines and didn't like the feeling I got, so I went digging for more info and came up with this on a news site:

Update: As of Oct. 2, 2009, Dr. Vicki Wood, the vet, tells 9NEWS NOW the dog has some parasites that are preventing proper weight gain. Wood says the dog is more alert but will need a extra days to recover with the rescue family.

LAWTON, Ok. (WUSA) ---- A dog eats with an amazing appetite after a mother and daughter rescued him. Turns out, "Brindle" ran away ten years ago from Gary Rowley of Fredericksburg, Va.

Amy Rohde tells 9NEWS NOW her eight-year-old Tristan saw Brindle under a bush on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.

"I thought that he had died. He was nothing but skin and bones," says Rohde. She says it took about 20 minutes for the dog to "hobble" to the house.

Dr. Vicki Wood of Bark Avenue Pet Clinic saw the malnourished dog the day after he was found.

"I would like to see an additional ten pounds. He has hip bones that stick out," says Wood to 9NEWS NOW.

Wood located the microchip implanted in Brindle. The microchip identified the dog's name and the dog owner, Gary Rowley.

Rohde says she used Facebook to message all of the profiles under the same name, Friday, Sept. 25, 2009.

"I got a hit back about two hours later. We were very skeptical of each other," she says. Later Rowley sent some pictures of Brindle from a decade ago.

A reunion is expected with Rowley after the dog becomes healthy enough for travel.

Rowley could not be reached for comment at time of this article.

Some of the commenters on this article agree with me:

"broadway1976 wrote:
If it had been my dog, I would have already been there to pick him up or at least be with him."

"Jan159 wrote:
Sounds to me like the owner is really not interested in the dog and never was. I think the dog should stay with his new family, at least if they can afford his very healthy appetite.

I think the "owner" is afraid he's going to be stuck w/a bundle of vet bills. He brought up that he not mad at the dog. Why would anyone even have such a thought if they weren't angry with the dog.

Thank goodness for these kind, empathetic people, the Rohdes, in Oklahoma!

8. this is why I tend to corral dogs wandering without collars on and call animal warden
If they aren't familiar and don't seem to know where they are going.

Our local animal warden holds dogs for a couple of weeks and then hands them to Animal Rescue Fund for adoption.
