Homeland Security officer arrested on drunken driving charge in Weymouth
Immigration officer leads police on chase of more than 100 mph, cops say

WEYMOUTH —

An immigration officer with the Department of Homeland Security was charged with second-offense drunken driving after allegedly leading police on a chase at speeds topping 100 mph.

Omar Hernandez, 32, of Weymouth is also charged with resisting arrest, driving to endanger, failing to stop for a police officer, failing to stop for a red light and speeding. Hernandez drove past police officer David Canny at a high rate of speed south on Main Street just off Route 3 at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Canny followed the Mercedes and turned on his blue lights when the driver stopped for a red light at Main and Middle streets.

The driver then sped off, reaching 110 mph on a section of Main Street where the speed limit is 35 mph and blowing through a red light at Park Avenue, police said. The car then stopped abruptly in the middle of the road near 800 Main St. in South Weymouth, police said. Hernandez refused to obey orders to turn off his engine and toss the keys out the window, and he refused to get out of the car, police said.

Hernandez was charged with drunken driving in Quincy in October 2006. The charge was continued without a finding.
