Rescued kittens recovering

http://www.omaha.com/article/20090926/NEWS01/709269892/-1/FRONTPAGE

Published Saturday September 26, 2009

By Andrew J. Nelson

When a fisherman goes down to the Missouri River to cast a lure into its murky waters, he expects to come back with a fish or two, maybe nothing.

Certainly not a plastic bag of 10 scraggly and emaciated little kittens, disposed of like trash.

That was the case on the morning of Sept. 15.

The man had just started fishing when he saw the bag by the side of the river. He figured he would pick up the trash, take it with him and throw it out after he was done, said Joni Cisney, director and coordinator of the Animal Rescue Society.

Then he saw the bag move. And he heard the meows.

Inside were the kittens. And their urine. And their poop.

The man called his wife on his cell phone, and she got on the Internet, found a number for the Animal Rescue Society, and she called Cisney.

The society was full with cats. But Cisney had to do something. She drove out to the river, where the kittens and the man were — near the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. She never got his name.

FULL story at link.

2. I don't normally support the Death Penalty.
But it's things like this that make me reconsider.

:grr:

To be so callous. How can any such person have a soul?

Thank goodness this man found them and that he can his wife have hearts.

3. i have a fat little rescue kitty on my lap as I type
My sister found him in her flowerbed. The mom must have been transporting him somewhere and couldn't make it. We did let him stay there for a couple of hours before i brought him home.

Had to do the whole KMR route. He still had the umbilical cord. I was surprised that he survived. This is the youngest animal i ever rescued. I have 6 rescue dogs and 1 other rescue cat.

He was just a little booger - so the name stuck -BOOGER.

5. We have five rescues...I think there's a bulletin board where unwed mother
cats look to place their kittehs, with us at the top....

We have had as many as nine. Bastards.

6. must confess that i have a slew of 'feral" cats I feed twice a day
they are the most beautiful things i have ever seen. I feed them at 7AM and7PM. I add wet cat food to the evening meal. Their coats are beautiful. There is a pair of Siamese looking teen kittens. They have 6 toes! They are starting to let me sort of handle them. Will start taking them to get fixed, so won't have more unwed moms running around.

16. I have 4 feral cats that hang around my house
This just started recently, I now feed them and put out water. I'm looking into a local agency that will allow me to get them fixed. There's a local group that if I get them registered and take them to a specific clinic will fix them for free, I don't have a lot of money to be spending on them, and what I do have is going towards Purina Cat Chow each week.

I have two indoor kitties, my pets, so they must have instinctively known if they hung around here I would take care of them. I wasn't feeding them at first, just water, but one just looked too thin. I have to feed them, I can't let them starve, I'll get them fixed and keep taking care of them. I mean, how could I not, today when I got home from my errands, two were on my front porch and they started scarfing down that food.

19. Purina Pro Club
Purina has a club on line. I feed ferals too. You can sign up online, than save the weight circles on the bags. They are sent in for $6 coupons. Every little bit helps. They also have coupons.

8. I now have two "stray" cats...
Sadly, our neighborhood is over run with all manner of strays. I put food out for them every evening, so they have come to see us as friendly folk. My son befriended a gorgeous black cat with light green eyes... a few weeks after that we noticed that she was "with kitten"... a few months after that she had her two kits under my bed. Yipes! That was 5 months ago.. these two kittens have been handled and loved from day 1, and are the sweetest, cuddliest cats I have ever had the pleasure to be in contact with. We tried to find homes for them, but had no luck. The kids are thrilled that we are keeping them, but I don't know how I'll be able to manage the vet bills. They are both boys and will need "fixing" soon...

Here are the little varmints playing in my vintage crinolines... I came home one day to find that they had pulled them all down and were having the time of their lives. They are so beautiful, it's impossible to get mad at them.

13. I think the economy is driving people to abandon their pets
Often those abandoned pets are not spayed or neutered, and it doesn't take long for a couple of stray cats to build a large population of part-wild, part-tame litters. Those litters then go on to reproduce, creating almost wholly wild offspring that are often trapped and euthanized. It's a really, really sad state of affairs.

All my cats are rescue kitties (at least I rescued them from the shelter before they were put down), and they're like my children, albeit mischievous bastard children. One of my cats has figured out how to open doors, cupboards, heavy dresser drawers and even the oven door. We haven't figured out how he does it because many of the doors and drawers he opens outweigh him by quite a bit. He's a sneaky little shit, though; he's perfectly well behaved while we're home, not touching anything, and just hanging out in our laps or on the back of the couch. As soon as we leave, though...

We have 4 cats right now, but have had up to 9 living with us at one time. We have a huge house with lots of kitty amenities built in, and they even have their own room (a large converted bathroom) that has beds, hiding places, climbing poles, hidey-houses and a window where they can watch the birds outside. They sleep every night from 11 PM until 5 AM in their room, and if we're late putting them to bed, they get grouchy.

I love 'em all, and kudos to you for watching out for a couple of the little guys. :toast:

11. There are no words to describe my disgust with the person who threw out those kittens as if they
were garbage...

And I wish a long and joyous life to all those who were involved in the rescue of those babies.

I hope there is some way to find the person who committed this crime and make them face the public and punishment.

15. I wound up with a litter somebody tried to donate to Goodwill.
They were abandoned in a box behind one of their stores. Long story short, all four kittens found great homes. But if I ever find who abandoned them, I'm going to stuff him in a box and leave it on a loading dock in the summertime, just to see how he likes it.

17. I Don't Get ....
...any cats here to care for, but I do get plenty of dogs, including one I named Charlotte.

Before - ?click (posting as a clickable link since it's not pretty)

After

She just stopped coming one day. She stopped coming about eight or so months ago; I still wish to see her every day, though I know it's unlikely. In this area, a pit bull is only good for two things: actively fighting or being used as bait. Plus, she'd been tearing up people's trash bags because she was hungry, and people called Animal Control numerous times.

People are such monumental douchesacks - both the people who almost starved her to death and those who called Animal Control even while seeing the bowls of food in my front yard for her.

I'm glad those cats are okay. So upsetting that there are some who could commit such atrocities.

18. I have 2 cats that were recued from a dumpster 12 years ago.
Edited on Sun Sep-27-09 05:57 AM by Are_grits_groceries
They were so small that they couldn't climb into a regular litterbox I had gotten. I had to go to the store and get one of those aluminum pans used in cooking that have lower sides.

They were just old enough to eat solid food. I had to keep them separated from my older cat until they were old enough to be tested for feline leukemia. After they were cleared, I brought them home and put the carrier down so my older cat could see them. He stuck his nose near the door, and this tiny white paw came out and whapped him a couple of times.

It was hysterical watching them get used to each other. They were much, much smaller, but not scared a bit. they would tree him on some stacked up boxes. I don't think he was scared of them. He just didn't want to be annoyed.
they were fine together in no time.

Edit to add: One of them looks a lot like "Meh Kitteh." I haven't seen her snurl, but she does stick her tongue out at me. So does her sister.
