Father Charged With Felony Battery On Coach

By MARI ROBYN JONES The Tampa Tribune

Published: Apr 15, 2007

TAMPA - When the first punch came at head coach Jim Woolever, he didn't know what to think.

Woolever said he stepped back, stunned. A parent of one of his baseball players had just punched him in the mouth, Woolever and police said.

The two men scuffled outside the dugout in front of about 20 people, including students, before a game between Oldsmar Christian School and Citrus Park Christian School on Friday afternoon.

5. Who said this was a fundie?
One can be a Christian and not be a fundie.

Granted, that doesn't excuse his behavior, but I don't see anything in there that leads me to believe the father was a fundie. He may be, but we don't know that he is.

Christian does NOT equal fundie.

7. Basically when the name of a school is "something Christian school"
The odds are heavily in favor of it being a fundie school.

If it weren't fundie they wouldn't feel the need to put "Christian" in there.

8. The assailant/father is in fact a Federal Probation Officer
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 07:38 AM by Divernan
That is more alarming to me than whether he is "just" a Christian or a fundie/Christian. Wonder if dear old dad packed heat to the kids' games.

Probation officer Daniel Mangru tells Pinellas Technical Educational Center students about consequences of illegal drug sales.

Locally, probation officers use the CD-ROM in a presentation for students. Thousands of students, mostly in middle and high school, have seen the program, according to probation officer Jonathan Lopez, who recently addressed students at the Pinellas Technical Education Center, along with fellow probation officer Daniel Mangru.

10. It was reported that the attacker was screaming
"the power of Christ compels you to play my son at third base.the power of Christ compels you to play my son at third base, the power of Christ compels you to play my son at third base" as he struck the coach.

12. I dunno which aspect to address first!
You would not believe how much crap you catch when you coach a kids' sport. Been there, done that, and got more than a couple of tshirts to prove it, and I'll tell you that parents ragging on your butt is the WORST part about coaching anything.

If it isn't somebody chewing on you because they want their kid playing in different position it is somebody telling you that you suck as a coach because you do (or don't do...) something THEY would do if THEY were coaching.

Most of the time when anyone gets all up in my face I look at them and tell them they have a wonderful point, we need all the help we can get, and would they PLEASE come to the next practice to help the kids. They leave skid marks trying to get away from me. Most often they don't mess with me again for the rest of the season.

I have had parents bring kids to the ball field and then leave. Maybe if it was just players I wouldn't mind as much, but I have had parents drop off ALL the kids and then leave. I did not sign up to be a damn babysitter and if I'm trying to work with a dozen little girls on how to swing a bat I do not have time to watch an assortment of younger siblings.

I have been pretty even tempered with everyone except one lady last year. Sometimes this parent crap just goes too far...

Last year my husband had a freaking heart attack in the dugout at the girl's softball game. He was sitting there with the score book, looked up and said "I need to go to the ER. I am having heart attack." When I said I was calling 911, he told me no--he didn't want to freak out all the kids. Like a dumb ass, I let him slide on the ambulance and I drove him to the hospital AFTER making sure somebody could cover for us in coaching the remainder of the game.

Kev got lucky, his heart attack was pretty localized and the docs managed to help him with some stents and meds. He was out of the hospital a few days later and actually felt good enough that he went to a game a week after the heart attack. He sat in a lawn chair behind the dugout, but he went to that game.

My husband was sitting in a freaking lawn chair behind the dugout--a week after having a heart attack--and I actually had a parent give me a raft of crap because he hadn't worked his shift in the softball league SNACK BAR that very night. As sure as I am sitting here, that stupid cow had the chutzpah to try and climb up my leg because the snack bar had four parents in it that night instead of five...

I explained that he'd had a heart attack the week before and we'd not had time to arrange for both a substitute COACH and a sub for him in the snack bar. At that point this dumb ass woman is stupid enough to call me irresponsible because kev is not in the freaking snack bar. They almost had to pull me off her...

Softball season and our first practice for this year start Tuesday...

Tim Wilson did a song titled "Church League Softball Fistfight" and it is one of the funniest things I have ever heard. If you get a chance give it a listen.
