Death becomes them: Health care debate suggests the nation suffers from delusions of invincibility
from NOW Toronto:

Death becomes them
Health care debate suggests the nation suffers from delusions of invincibility

By Jacob Scheier

New York City When it comes to health care reform, the U.S. reminds me of a relative I had who suffered paranoid delusions, likely due to brain tumours. Trying to help her led to accusations that I was trying to harm her.

True, she didnt call me, as Barack Obamas critics have labelled him, a socialist, but only because that was a compliment in our family.

The fact that a Sarah Palin-?invented delusion about Obama supporting death panels supposedly to decide if the infirm should be treated may be a significant factor in killing real reform is enough to make any sane person crazy.

But those protesters at the town halls and the recent million-?lunatic march (about 60,000) on Washington, DC, arent really afraid of death panels. Theyre afraid of death itself.

The problem arises from the fact that many Fox Network-?type Americans do not die but are or will be Raptured up. They are for death panels, or, rather, for one particular death panel: the one overseen by Jesus Christ. God, unlike Democrats, has a precise plan for their health.

Then theres Americas reckless unilateralism and massive debt, both of which suggest that the nation is suffering from delusions of untouchability. And dont forget the cult of celebrity, where the famous rarely show signs of aging, and those who do do so inhumanly, like Michael Jackson. Mostly celebs simply vanish as if Raptured up, while those of us who actually age, get wrinkled, gain weight and lose hair are left behind. ........(more)

We have "good" health insurance from my husband's work, but we are like all Americans, ripe for denial if we get seriously ill. The closer age 65 looms, the more secure I feel. I just fear for the younger generations. (I harbor no delusions of invincibility.)

2. I've said that since I was a kid.
Seriously, no country is perfect, every one has problems, but most of the US marches around waving a flag and screaming "we're Number One!" at the top of their lungs, and god help anybody who thinks any differently.

I regularly read the blog of a Canadian knitter--she's written several books and is quite witty. Some idiot American got pissed this summer because she wrote a blog post in honor of Canada Day--she took it to mean she was slamming the US, when she never meantioned the US at all. She then proceeded to wage a hate campaign on this poor woman to the point that the blogger was talking to her local police to try and stop it. The attacker's whole theme was "no one attacks the US," but she was too stupid to understand that people outside the US can be proud of their countries and not have it be an attack on America.

Idjuts, all of them . . . .
