25% Oklahoma City Students Know President's Name - Only 3% Could Pass Citizenship Test

75 Percent of Oklahoma High School Students Can't Name the First President of the U.S.

News9.com

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Only one in four Oklahoma public high school students can name the first President of the United States, according to a survey released today. The survey was commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs in observance of Constitution Day on Thursday.

Brandon Dutcher is with the conservative think tank and said the group wanted to find out how much civic knowledge Oklahoma high school students know. The Oklahoma City-based think tank enlisted national research firm, Strategic Vision, to access students' basic civic knowledge. "They're questions taken from the actual exam that you have to take to become a U.S. citizen," Dutcher said.

One thousand students were given 10 questions drawn from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services item bank. Candidates for U.S. citizenship must answer six questions correctly in order to become citizens. About 92 percent of the people who take the citizenship test pass on their first try, according to immigration service data. However, Oklahoma students did not fare as well. Only about 3 percent of the students surveyed would have passed the citizenship test.

Dutcher said this is not just a problem in Oklahoma. He said Arizona had similar results, which left him concerned for the entire country. "It points to a real serious problem. We're not going to remain ignorant and free," Dutcher said.

- The question I have is: even if they do know what the President's name is (the current one), would they admit it???

49. They might be running around loose and off the chain
but what they don't realize is that they're anything but free. They might be off the chain and running around biting ankles, but they're still absolutely beholden to their corporate masters, getting their marching orders through Faux Snooze. Ever notice how when one of them says something, they all repeat it in unison? It's fucking unnatural and it's sure not freedom.

They gots feedom alright /snark.

13. To us,
this is a shocking travesty and the example of the decline of our republic. Of course, Conservatives won't really be concerned about this for now. I mean, its only the first president and Father of our Country. Obviously a very forgettable personality :sarcasm: Of course, when they fail to remember who was president from 1980 until 1988, then ALL SHIT WILL HIT THE FAN!!!
Although I am pretty sure they are reminded of that fact constantly so it should be a while before that actually becomes a concern for them.

36. Freepers haven't cornered the market....
....on stupid. I've said and done stupid things too. Apparently this is another one. I contemplated whether or not to use the pic for sometime before I decided to, even knowing that when I did someone would object. It's hard not to offend these days. But I'm not sufficiently politically correct I suppose, but neither was I trying to be insensitive here at obese people's expense.

I find it both ironic and appalling that here was woman who came to Washington to protest making healthcare available to everyone, when she herself is such an obvious candidate for it and will no doubt require healthcare services in the future. All the while she seeks to deny this for others.

And she's not alone. I'm also aware of the statistics of how poverty very often results in obesity due to improper diet. And I think that obesity is partly the result of the adulteration of our food from additives and sugar. And no telling what else. What I don't know, is how we will ever be able resolve these problems, if we can never talk about them. Ever. Particularly when obesity is probably responsible for the majority of healthcare problems in this country.

I'm sorry if you were offended, it was not my intent. But we cannot put on blinders and pretend these issues aren't there. Take care.

Talk to most high school students (young people in general 14-29) and they can name the finalist for "American Idol" for the last four seasons and name all the best videos from "America's Funniest Home Videos" (hate both shows with a passion) but couldn't tell you who the first president was or tell you where China was on a map or tell you the difference between Communism and Socialism and why it matters and why there are no pure Communist or Socialist countries and that the United States is more Socialist than Capitalist. More disturbing is THEY DON'T CARE. As long as they can get out of high school and get that "killer" $10 an hour job and buy some beer what else matters??? This subject upsets me more than any other. They just want to be spoon-feed the easiest to digest information and will FREELY admit they don't care if it's true or not because when it comes right down to it they don't care anyway. Even if they did care, they don't have even the basic research skills and educational foundation to weed out what is fact and what is opinion. I really fear for the future of our country. The scary part is that some of these children are the "smart kids" they know math and science but have little to no understanding of our history or the ANY knowledge of the rest of the world, no understanding of why the world is the way it is and no desire to learn it. Unless things change we are in for a VERY GRIM future and likely are now witnessing the the first stage of the collapse of our republic.

* Please don't rebuttal with how you like American Idol or AFV...hardly the point of my post.

62. But I thought public schools were great and homeschoolers were all crazy freaks?
This can't be true, public education is great and the only hope for kids. It can't have such problems....

66. That is truly outrageous that only 25% can name the first president of the US. It's a definite
failing somewhere.

68. This survey doesn't pass the smell test for me
The 3% passing rate is just not possible. I'm not saying it would be a majority of the school that would pass that but there is no way only 3% were able to come up with 6 answers. I don't trust surveys coming from a conservative think tank.

69. This makes it easier to understand how Inhofe, Coburn, Sally Kern &
probably most other elected officials in Oklahoma achieve their status.

70. This
is not only a problem in OK, but it's pretty wide spread. In NH I found that many high school students, one being a grandson, did not know how the three parts of our government function! I graduated many, many years ago, and I can remember clearly that civics was a very emphasized subject. I was discussing the education our kids are receiving today with someone and found that her children were not receiving half of the information they needed to know how our government works. Thanks to NCLB it is getting worse and worse. I believe, along with others, that the RW's want our system of education to fail so that charter and other private schools will take over education, and, their for profit cabal rings up the tax payers money even more. Also, kids will be educated in ideologies, not facts. Other cultures, beliefs and even simple geography seem to have fallen away from educating our kids about this country, it's origins, and other countries and cultures.

What a shame and loss to those coming through the 'system'.
