ACORN employee offers response. "I decided to shock them as much as they were shocking me."

(San Bernardino, CA) -- Today the videographer James O'Keefe's hidden camera "interview" with San Bernardino ACORN organizer Tresa Kaelke, airing repeatedly on Fox "News", including the Glenn Beck show, and on BigGovernment.com, has been caught out in an obvious set of lies and manipulations.

When the actors approached Ms. Kaelke with their provocative costuming and outlandish scenario, she could not take them seriously. So she met their outrageousness with her own personal style of outrageousness. She matched their false scenario with her own false scenarios.

"They were not believable", said Ms. Kaelke of the two actors. "Somewhat entertaining, but they weren't even good actors. I didn't know what to make of them. They were clearly playing with me. I decided to shock them as much as they were shocking me. Like Stephan Colbert does saying the most outrageous things with a straight face. While her sense of humor might not be funny to many people, the fact is that she spun false scenario after false scenario and the videographer ate them up.

For example, in response to the set-up by the filmmakers in which they say they are trying get the young woman away from her abusive pimp, she responds that she was abused by her former husband as well (true) and that she shot and killed him (false). He is very much alive and living near Barstow, CA ...

This makes more sense to me than thinking that anyone believed their 1970's pimp/prostitute get up and the story that followed. I'll await more information. But, I'm glad someone offered a seemingly plausible explanation.

4. I think the ladies were probably having fun with these fools?
They probably thought they were off their rockers.

I recall being a young banker. We had many mentally challenged people (dreamers) that would come in and tell "stories". Many with friends. We'd entertain all sorts of nonsense. I recall one family who perpetually claimed they were on speaking terms with Ed McMahon. All three would swear that he was going to be giving them large sums of money in the near future. All three claimed that they personally spoke to him on a regular basis. One of many like stories...

iow, her story has at least a whiff of truth.

and i am NO apologist for the stuff that went down in baltimore, DC, etc.

201. No they can't, but she also didn't know she was being taped.
She had a lapse of judgment, but that in no way justifies the reaction heaped upon her or ACORN.

DU should have known better than to fall for this crap being pedaled by Fox and the RW. We have seen for years how they have lied and deceived. Now some punks come up with a choppy, blurred, highly edited video and everyone jumps on it as being God's truth just as it was shown. We can't even see the people who are supposedly setting up these scenarios. For all we know, the woman who was saying you are a performing artist, might have been alluding to the fact that they were in there being performing "artists", which they were.

Without making any effort to really analyze what they were seeing, many, including Jon Stewart, fell for this.

Hook, line and sinker a large portion of DU and the Progressive community got punked.

ACORN has been in the right's cross-hairs for some time. Usually, when you know you're being watched you don't do anything that may give your opponent extra ammo.

After all the charges flung at them during the election why would anyone working for ACORN think that "playing along" with something like this would be a good idea.

not do so? I would imagine if she called police they'd tell her she needed actual evidence of a crime, not blather? She indicated she did not believe their story.

I have called police when prostitutes solicited drive through customers at the bank I worked at years ago. Unless you witness a crime and are willing to file an affidavit, police are of no help in this situation.

"Some fool came into my office posing as a pimp, arrest him!" That wouldn't fly...

Whether or not it's a true crime is for the cops to determine. Of all the bullshit being peddled to defend ACORN the one about how they'd get in trouble for bothering the cops is the lamest one. Apparently other ACORN offices did call them and I haven't heard or read that those employees got in legal trouble for it.

The "filmmaker" is a sleazy douchebag playing right out of the Atwood/Rove handbook. That doesn't excuse the ACORN people who went along with his ruse. Supposedly, other ACORN offices called the cops on them immediately. It's what all of them should have done.

Police in the inner city have more important things to do that deal with this crap. It's not like the suburbs. Half the time they won't come anyway and the trust between the police and the community is not always wine and roses.

236. I understand what you're saying,
but you can't call the cops because people are telling a goofy story. It's not a crime to sit in an ACORN office and lie.

The wise thing would have been for the ACORN worker to tell them she was very sorry, but she couldn't help them, and then show them out.

But, when you're bored at work, strange things happen.

Calling the cops would have had the cops really pissed at ACORN, at the worker, and for good reason. They might have been needed elsewhere, where a real crime was taking place.

There was no crime there. This is why the M$M hasn't picked up the story - it's bogus, from beginning to end. And not very interesting, either, except that those two people posing as pimp and prostitute were just pathetic..........................................

110. And I still would have called the cops on them.
I used to volunteer for a community resource hotline. I manned the phones Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 10pm to 6am. Most of the calls I got were along the lines of "how do I pay my utility bill" or "a pipe burst in my apartment, what do I do?" But every once in a while I get a call from someone who said they wanted to kill themselves, or had overdosed on drugs, or as one man said "I want to kill people". Did I know if those people were fucking with me? Sometimes I think they were. But because of the position I was in, I treated every one of those disturbing calls like it was legitimate and routed it to the proper authorities. It wasn't the place of those ACORN workers to decide that the people who presented themselves to them were joking and to play along with them. They're not Wonkette. They're a community organization that gets federal funding. The ACORN offices that played along with the ruse did the wrong thing. The ones that called the cops right away did the right thing.

She worked for an agency that gets federal funds and a guy showed up there who wanted advice on how he could set up a brothel and import underage prostitutes without attracting the attention of the law. The very LEAST she could do was to tell him to go away. What she chose to do was to "joke" with him and inform him of the many ways he could set his "hooker" girlfriend up in business and declare underage girls as "dependents".

121. She knew that they were frauds. There was no crime committed.
The fact that you don't like her sense of humor has nothing to do with whether or not a crime was committed. This woman did not commit a crime, she did not abet in a crime, she was smart enough to recognize a fraud and with them for her own amusement. She didn't want to tell them to go away because she was enjoying herself. Sometimes, to break up our day-in-and-day-out existence, we get an opportunity to mix it up a little.

Fraud is committed on a regular basis by may individual employed by companies who receive federal funds. The customary response is to charge the employee, not to launch an investigation into the company and rarely to cut them off from receiving government contracts in the future. A company would have to do something totally egregious to elicit that kind of response.

Or maybe not...
http://www.upsizethis.org/forum/index.php?act=Post&CODE...
Let's set the wayback machine to 2002. You remeber how Bush responded to criticism over all the fucking no-bid contracts? Contracts for, let's say, feeding the troops, or driving trucks, or building facilities. Bush and Cheney single-sourced all these contracts to a collection of good old boys and then turned around to tell the public that y'see, there wasn't any TIME to put these contracts out for bid, and anyway, we want the people we know are the BEST PEOPLE to work on these contracts. Don't protest too much, goddamn it, we're at war.

In the years that followed, we heard about the epic-level waste, fraud and abuse by these contractors. Of drivers abandoning trucks, substandard meals using the cheapest ingredients, poor facilities construction and maintenance, billions of dollars going missing. We heard about the mercenaries contractors we hired actually behaving like the hired thugs they were. We heard about servicemen dying not in the line of duty, but dying of electrocution while showering in their barracks. Not once, but three times.

But it goes deeper. (Continued below)

http://www.navytimes.com/news/2009/05/ap_i...tractor_05... /

WASHINGTON An electrician hired by the Army to help inspect electrical work at facilities where U.S. soldiers operate in Iraq said Wednesday that 90 percent of wiring done in newly constructed buildings by one military contractor was done improperly.

The inspector, Jim Childs, said in prepared testimony that an estimated 70,000 buildings in Iraq were not up to code. The work was performed by Houston-based KBR Inc.

"When I began inspecting the electrical work performed by KBR, my co-workers and I found improper electrical work in every building we inspected," Childs said. An advanced copy of Childs' testimony before the Senate Democrats' policy committee Wednesday was obtained by The Associated Press.

At least three service members have been electrocuted while showering at U.S. facilities in Iraq. Others have been injured or killed in electrical incidents.

Yeah, check that shit out. Not only is KBR so fucking inept they actually managed to kill "at least" three servicemen (we don't know how many injured), it turns out that this was a systematic and ubiquitous failing on their part. To call this "incompetence" hardly does it justice. How fucking dare they build facilities with faulty wiring? There is no excuse, not even in a combat zone.

These servicemen put their trust in contractors. They expect facilities to be safe, inspected, and quality-assured, just like back in the States. They expect that taking a shit or a shower or eating a meal isn't any different than if they were in their own house and eating their own food. KBR has betrayed these men and women.

But typically:
Heather Browne, a KBR spokeswoman, said in a statement that KBR was not responsible for the deaths, and the company is cooperating.

"The assertion that KBR has a track record of shoddy electrical work is unfounded," Browne said.

Unfounded my ass. This company needs to go out of business.

If you really believe that these people bought what these two clowns were pedaling it really says more about you than them.

It is so fricking obvious that these clowns were in costumes and were not a pimp and prostitute that I'm sure these employees had just as much fun f*cking with them. They just didn't know they were being taped.

Edit to add: I work in the inner city and had my purse stolen and I knew who stole it. I called the police and they laughed at me when I gave them the address and asked them to go get it. They were too afraid. I went and got it myself.

You have a thing or two to learn about the police in poor neighborhoods and the inner city. I'm sure that they saw no need to call the police because they knew these people were not who they claimed to be and knew it was a waste of time to call them.

You shouldn't give people advice on how they can set up a brothel and import underage prostitutes. Yeah, I'd say you should exercise some discretion. Self-censorship, if you will.

It's not illegal to pretend to be a pimp. It's not illegal to pretend to enslave underage girls into prostitution.

Because she knew that they were frauds, she chose to not make a false report.

216. I think you are right.
What she did was wrong.

When I work in a community organization and this happened, I would have thrown these two out immediately. Of course, I was the public relations director so I would have been more aware of the consequences of being caught in this.

I would have thrown them out for 2 reasons: 1) they were so desperately insulting to the people we serve, and 2) to save our organization from publicity if someone finally saw them that would have kicked their asses.

But I do know there would have been some volunteers and other employees who would have toyed with them.

I knew right away she was screwing with them. So I wouldn't have given her an Oscar.

She's got 2 people who are so obviously not what they say they are. They are outsiders and clearly just a little full of themselves. So she starts playing into their stereotype of the people they are trying to mock by telling them she killed at guy. She probably laughed her ass off telling everyone who could listen how they nearly crapped their pants and how naive they were.

The way she couldn't shut up, the way she couldn't complete a sentence, the way she moved (she couldn't stand still for two seconds), the way she bragged about bullshit things, and hello... she's from the San Bernardino area.

Tweaker for sure.

Having had bad experiences with tweakers who were family, friends, and acquaintences, I have to take ANYTHING she says with a grain of salt. Or a saltshaker full of salt.

137. Yeah well you can call me whatever you like. See my sig line.
I know tweakers like I know my own fingernails. I was one for a short while, until I got sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

I know how they talk, I know how they act, I know how they brag. I also live in what some consider to be the tweaker capitol of the world. This woman cannot stop moving. Not for a single second. If her hands aren't moving, her feet are. What would seal the deal for me is getting close enough to see how her mouth/jaw/tongue moves when she's listening and not talking (those moments seem to be few and far between in the video I saw but someone who knows tweakers knows exactly what I mean) and whether or not she licks her teeth.

I saw GW work his jaw back and forth and thought the same thing thousands of DU'ers did... he's either high on coke or meth.

So you can call me whatever you like, if you think that'll get under my skin and make me recant what I believe. I'd venture a guess that my experience with tweakers far outweighs yours. I have them in my family.

Watch away sis. Watching me won't enrich your life, nor will it dampen mine.

If my game is knowing the culture of a finely chopped white powder, and what it does to people, then you know me quite well.

If you think I'm in this to hurt ACORN in some way, you're on the Interstate going the wrong way. I'm merely being realistic.

Here are a few thoughts for you to sleep on, and they're only my observations and opinions...

No reputable lawyer has stepped up in ACORN's defense. No lawsuits have been filed refuting what's been filmed and few, if any, elected officials have stepped up to ANY podium and decried what's gone on in the context of wrongdoing on the part of the two people who've exposed what's been exposed.

Let's see what happens in the next few days. Let's see if Ms. Lewis follows through with her claim that she and ACORN will be pursuing legal action against the "investigative journalists" and their co-conspirators, who she names as Fox News.

Why have so many elected officials who SHOULD be supporting ACORN jumped ship so fast?

And ACORN employees committed no crime. What kind of lawsuit would you imagine that they could file? Why did so many elected officials vote to allow Bush to conduct war when the public record proved that there was no reason to and public was against it?

You are not an honest person and you will slip one day and I hope, given that I've put you on my morning search list, you will slip one day.

What kind of lawsuit, you ask? Why don't you ask Bertha Lewis? She's the one who made the quote in my subject line.

I'll be watching HER. As should you be. HER actions, or lack thereof, will be the deciding factor in whether or not this budding scandal is to be thought of as an isolated incident, or systemic to the way ACORN operates.

What the hell does Bush have to do with this? You ARE aware that he's no longer the President of the United States, are you not?

I am more than a little bit flattered that I'll be on your morning reading list. No one has ever elevated me to that stature.

You are correct in one thing: ACORN employees committed NO CRIME that is evident in any of the video that I've seen.

Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 03:17 AM by yodoobo
There really isn't a good conclusions to be drawn. Possibilities:

1) She is an honest and gleeful person who doesn't mind describing how she murdered her husband.

2) She is a tweaker who is fantasy land and making up stories to impress or shock the strange people before her.

3) She is clean, and was just having fun while shes damages the reputation of an organization that tries to help people.

I really don't know what meme you are referring to. I generally don't buy into the meme bullshit paranoia that I see thrown around by both the left and right. But if it is a meme...its certainly a very strange one.

154. So this is the new excuse and justification for poor, innocent ACORN.
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 08:53 AM by woo me with science
A day ago, your excuse was that there were ONLY two, or three,....or whoops! four offices caught offering to help hide a child prostitution ring.

Today the excuse is that those wacky ACORN people were just going along with the joke.

Newsflash. This is ONE woman, providing a very convenient explanation after the fact.

Still FOUR offices, people, and some absolutely disgusting behavior on tape. Maybe one ACORN person was enough of an idiot to go along with the "joke." Frankly, I'm not even sure I believe she was joking, looking at the tape.

I am getting a sense of how far some apologists will go here...the filth and corruption they will excuse....as long as the person involved has a "D" after his or her name. Try some fucking honesty. Think about it. If this were any conservative organization, you would be calling for investigations and hearings and retribution. Any MENTION of importing underage girls into the country for prostitution by Operation Rescue, and you would have the list of Republican pedophiles and your manufactured outrage all ready to go. But these are presumably Dems, so ACORN gets a pass, and it's all the mean media's fault. I guess ALL of the ACORN representatives on tape, in four separate cities, must have been joking.

I am so fucking sick of morally bankrupt hypocrites whose judgments of right and wrong depend on the letter after someone's name.

ACORN has EARNED an investigation. Yes, it was a sting, but golly gee, how hard is it not to get caught offering to help set up a CHILD PROSTITUTION ring in multiple cities? Is the bar for ethical behavior just too high????

Multiple cities. We are not talking just about your little savior woman here who claims to have been playing along. Were they all playing along?

You have checked your conscience at the door, and you ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 09:55 AM by woo me with science
is blind allegiance, about as far from critical thinking as you can get.

It is a blind follower, not a critical thinker, who reflexively dismisses and ridicules what is now multiple videotaped examples of corruption to the point of supporting child trafficking...just because she likes the organization involved. It is a blind follower who continues to mindlessly cheer a foreign leader who shares many of her political views, even when he begins engaging in acts that would appall her if committed by her own government.

Ideologues engage in binary thinking. They support their buddies, no matter the facts. Critical thinkers are able to look at someone they like and say, "Wait a minute here..." They are able to hold their ideas of right and wrong apart from the person or the organization.

These chortles do not reflect a pattern of critical thinking. In fact, they reveal just the opposite.

Sometimes the internet makes me very sad.

158. Faux edited the tapes..just like Wright's...
It is reported they were 'heavily edited'

The G-NO-P loves to take good things and twist them around(I still hate the Kerry purple heart bandaids).

This is their attempt to silence an organization connected to the president, to portray it as vile, when it really does do good things and services for its community (which is more than I can say for our sitting congresscritters).
FOx did that with Rev. Wright...or have you forgotten that one?
The Rev is a good man, done much for his congregation and community.
But the way that man's name was reviled, he was made out to be such an ANGRY BLACK MAN. And he in no way deserved it.
I listened to his sermons. They had a clear message of dealing with bad things and turning them around for good.
The Rev threw himself under the bus because of Obama. Rev's doing OK, but now, what do you think of when you hear his name?
Same thing for Acorn. Acorn helps the poor to vote. Do you get it?

163. Far more plausible than what's being spread
And what's being spread has more than a whiff of manure.

Here's more oddness coming out from another angle:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/09/blowbac...

Then there's the man who bills himself as "the Senates most outspoken critic of ACORN," Sen. David Vitter, R-Louisiana.

Vitter has introduced a bill that would deny any federal funds to the group, which bills itself as the nation's largest grassroots organization serving low-income and middle-income Americans.

"After months of beating the drum and continued news reports of criminal investigations, the president and his administration are finally starting to distance themselves from ACORN. The Census dropping ACORN as a partner is a good, common sense move. Now we must go one step further and support my simple and direct amendment, which declares that no federal funds should go ACORN, said Vitter.

The Louisiana Democratic Party, however, points out a point of potential awkwardness for the senator -- the fake prostitution ring the young conservative journalists at BigGovernment.com talked about, versus the very real ones Vitter was accused of having frequented.

In terms of the continued news reports, most of what I recall has either been Acorn themselves turning in workers (and the entity defrauded in that case was Acorn) and the edited videos that are being pushed now by people trained in smear tactics.

As for Vitter leading the charge, well, the point of his hypocrisy is made aptly above.

189. OK. I totally "get" this. When I was phone banking for Obama, we would get prank calls all the time.
I mean, all the time, every day.

One evening I had been there for literally ten hours and I was cranky, hungry and bored.
I was especially tired of hearing registered democratic voters talk about how, now that McCain had picked Sarah Palin, they weren't so against McCain after all.

A prank caller started getting routed to MY line because it was my lucky day.
It sounded like a 12 year old boy and I could hear adults in the background.
He asked me if Barack Obama was terrorist and I hung up.
He called back over and over, asking the same dumb questions.
Was he muslim, was he kenyan, etc.
After about ten calls, I answered, "yes. He is. Of course he is. Everyone KNOWS that!"
The kid was stunned, then I heard him tell his dad "dad! She just said he is!!"
Of course, the dad gets on the phone, maybe believing he's finally hit the jackpot about Obama's true self.

"Did you just say that Obama is a muslim?" the dad asked.
"No. I said he's a terrorist. Every liberal knows it because we had a great big meeting about it and we are all so happy to finally have a terrorist president. But its a secret so don't tell anybody."
The big shock here is that this grown ass man who had put his son up to making stupid prank calls may have actually believed me.
All the while he kept saying "really, really?"
Of course, I assumed he'd realize I was sarcastically making fun of such stupid questions.
After I hung up, I thought "great. He's really going to believe this BS about Obama."
But then I thought, wait. If he tells his friends and family that he called an Obama campaign head quarters and a person calmly admitted that Obama was a terrorist and it was a big, happy liberal secret, no one would believe him. They'd think he was a bigger idiot then ever and probably wonder why the hell he was calling in the first place.

Yeah, I shouldn't have said such things and I'm sure if the other volunteers at my table had heard, they would have been upset, reported me and I would have been reprimanded if not asked to not volunteer anymore. At the moment, it felt really good.

So, yeah, I could buy this woman's explanation.
I definitely want to see and hear more from these women.

210. Of course I would. I actually have. Literally, in my work with prostitutes in Russia and Mexico.
So, yes, you're right that the woman should have called the police and certainly shouldn't have been goofing around with those idiots.

Clearly, she is not a good employee and its good that she was fired.
I think my "defense" of her is not really a defense of her actions.
Its a defense of her character.
She did something stupid.
She's a bad employee.
I sure as hell wouldn't hire her.
BUT (here comes my half defense) she isn't soulless and depraved and a despicable human being and an example of the absolute evil nature of the entire ACORN organization.
IF she had believed that any girl or woman was going to raped and she did nothing, then I'd think she was a despicable person.
What I have a problem with is the phony vitriol against this woman that is being used to attack ACORN, liberals, President Obama etc.

195. Closing this thread with a statement from the director of ACORN.
"As a result of the indefensible action of a handful of our employees, I am, in consultation with ACORN's Executive Committee1, immediately ordering a halt to any new intakes into ACORN's service programs until completion of an independent review. I have also communicated with ACORN's independent Advisory Council, and they will assist ACORN in naming an independent auditor and investigator to conduct a thorough review of all of the organizations relevant systems and processes. That reviewer, to be named within 48 hours, will make recommendations directly to me and to the full ACORN Board. We enter this process with a commitment that all recommendations will be implemented."

....

"We have all been deeply disturbed by what we've seen in some of these videos. I must say, on behalf of ACORN's Board and our Advisory Council, that we will go to whatever lengths necessary to reestablish the public trust. For nearly forty years, ACORN has given voice to communities, and gotten results. Right now, our nearly 500,000 member are working their hearts out for quality, affordable healthcare for every American and to help stop the foreclosure crisis. We must get this process right, so the good work can go forward."

Don't try to out shock somebody like this, but rather as soon as the word prostitution comes up, show them the door.

Sorry, but in this day and age you've got to think about CYA, and if these people were being that upfront and obvious, then it is time for CYA.

Lack of judgment in this case, and it is going to cost ACORN dearly.

253. Those aren't the only two options
It seems like one side says she confessed to murder (and seemed to believe her), while ACORN's statement tries to pretend that she knew all along what was going on and was pulling their legs.

The simpler (and I think obvious) reading is that she's a nutcase (who doesn't belong in this line of work). She didn't murder her husband AND had no idea who these kids were. She made it up because she's a dishonest person.
