Two simple words -- "You lie!" -- have thrust a previously obscure South Carolina congressman with Charleston roots into the national spotlight, raised the profile of his re-election campaign and symbolized the deep divisions that linger as President Barack Obama and Congress work to reform health care.

Wilson apologized to the White House on Wednesday night and again Thursday, and while President Barack Obama accepted the apology, U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said that might not be enough to satisfy their colleagues in the House.
"Our phone lines, e-mails and everything are running rampant to take some action," Clyburn said, adding that he would encourage Wilson to apologize on the House floor to try to avoid disciplinary action. "He told me he was not inclined to do that. ... He doesn't realize the gravity of what he said."

While Clyburn also described Wilson as a friend and noted their congressional districts share three common counties, he also said that Wilson has a combative streak. He pointed out that Wilson recently held one of his town hall meetings in Clyburn's district in a school Clyburn's children attended and just three miles from Clyburn's Columbia home.
"Why would he pass up the two high schools in his district to hold his town hall meeting around the corner from my house. What is that about?" Clyburn asked.
