Sorry I didn't post this earlier, but my computer was down while I was upgrading the system.
My daughter goes to a charter middle school in OKC. Principal sent a letter home, asking parents to sign a note and send it back to the school by this morning, stating whether the student would "opt out" of the speech or not.
We weren't too keen about the "opt out" thing, but we signed the letter, indicating our daughter had permission to watch the speech. After all, the principal "encouraged all parents to come watch with their child." Okay, fair enough, even though because of work conflicts, neither of us were able to attend the event with our daughter.
But today was when the real fun began. As it turned out, the "permission notes" were not part of an "opt out" policy, but rather "opt in." In other words, anyone whose parents didn't explicitly state they could watch the speech in school were not allowed to watch it. About half the students and all but a handful of teachers were no-shows.
The principal had MSNBC on at first, but sometime later switched to Fox. Sometime just after Obama's speech began, the local Fox affiliate broke in with a "weather alert test." The picture from the network remained, but the audio was completely blocked out by a high pitched shrieking noise. For TEN MINUTES...about half the length of the speech.
And, golly gee, wouldn't ya know it...the principal tried to change the channel on the TV (the only one in the school showing the speech, by the way), but couldn't find another channel carrying the speech. So, it stayed on Fox News.
After the speech was all over, somehow the TV got turned to C-SPAN. :eyes:
