Poll question: Labor Day Poll - Do you get a paid holiday today?
I'm sitting here at home, unpaid on another holiday that many many people get paid for. This year (like the last 2 years) I'm not getting a paid holiday because I don't have a full time job. My co-workers who work full-time get today off with pay, but I get to have a day off with worry that I'll be short this week on money, shorter than I normally am from being underemployed in the first place.

So I'm wondering what's up with my fellow DUers - do you have today off with pay?

23. Same here..
All my folks get the day off with pay.

They get insurance too, one of them gave me a nasty bug I've been fighting since Friday night. Looks like I get to use it this week.

22. I know.
I really needed to put "Other" as a poll option. People who are self-employed doing what they love are the happiest of workers, overall. (Barring some kind of Van Gogh-like psychopathology, of course. :))

6. I'm retired, but every full time job I've had in the past gave paid holiday leave
including Labor Day. The few part time jobs I had gave the day off without pay. My husband's full time job for the state of Vermont gives all paid holidays, as they do some part time positions.

8. I'm from New England originally,
where sane labor laws rule. It was quite a shocker moving to a so-called "right to work" state. Yes, you have the right to work your fingers to the bone for whatever peanuts they throw you! x(

11. Ah yes.
Temps & contractors. Business can delude itself that you want the flexibility of temp or contract work, so no need to pay you for holidays. Obviously, you're independently wealthy and just doing that contract work for kicks so you're not sitting home bored all day. I was a temp secretary at a college for two years. (Yes, "temporary" for two years, and would have been longer but I quit.) They closed for the week between Christmas and New Years. My fully employed co-workers got paid. I got nothing--right when Chritmas and heating bills were upon me in full force. :( I feel for you, Friend.

14. Paid holiday
I've had Labor Day as a paid holiday for the last 6 years. Even when I worked at Six Flags in high school we received time and a half for working Labor Day, as well has Memorial Day, 4th of July....double time for working during the fall weekends and Christmas time.

When I worked at Starbucks it was time and a half (I believe, it's been a few years), the only time I didn't get paid extra for working on a holiday was when I managed an independent coffee shop.

15. I never work Mondays. If it was a regularly scheduled day for me, it would be a day off w/pay.
Or I could have worked today and taken 8 hours of double time + whatever hours worked beyond that would be time and a half.

27. I worked temp secretarial for a decade.
No paid Labor Days then for me either. That's what woke me up to the demise of labor rights in the US. You have my sympathies too, Friend.
