RANK-and-file gardai last night called for an immediate recruitment drive to bolster the force after a thug targeted a garda van in a petrol-bomb attack.

An officer in his 30s was lucky to escape serious injury after a device was thrown through the window of a speed-detection van and onto his lap.

The incident occurred in the Primrose Hill Estate in Blarney, Co Cork, at around 7.30pm on Thursday.

Fortunately, the petrol bomb did not explode and the garda extinguished the device. The officer was not injured in the incident but was left badly shaken by the attack.

Gardai were last night hunting the man responsible. He was described as being 6ft tall and wearing dark clothing and a hoodie top.

I'd sure guess he was "badly shaken." I couldn't imagine how it would feel to so narrowly miss being catastrophically burned.
