I had the pleasure and honor of filling in his morning shifts on holidays and the very rare occasion (only when he was forced) that George took a vacation. An old school broadcaster to the last with that "Velvet Fog" voice that every morning you listened to him, it made it just a little easier to get your day going. I am beside myself. Good journey George. They just don't make them like you any more.

My old boss died last year at age 80. 99% of what I knew about my job he taught me. He was an activist manager and a profound skeptic of top management and the elected officials that determined policy. When he left after a prolonged pissing contest with his boss, I was promoted to his position. Fifteen years later I also left after a lengthy pissing contest.

In recent years we spent a lot of time sitting in his boat drowning worms, drinking beer and reliving old time experiences. He loved that I named one of my dogs after him.

I miss him every day.

When I was a teenager, I used to pick up a radio station from Minneapolis-St. Paul at night. The announcer was a guy named Franklin Hobbs, and his evening show was "Hobbs' House." He would play big band and jazz music, and a lot of really classic singers like Sinatra, Torme, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, and so on. I loved this music so much as a kid (and still do today), so I was in hog heaven when I could pick up the shows at night. I'd fall asleep with the radio right up to my ear so I could heard everything. Mr. Hobbs even read his own commercials, and he had the most wonderful voice.

Not long ago I found out that he had passed away a while back. Someone had posted mp3s of his last broadcast and the tribute broadcast the station did after he died. It was so wonderful to hear him again, but I was so sad that he was gone. I never knew him, but I felt like I did. It was just another part of my childhood that was gone.
