San Jose City Council to take up ban on plastic, paper bags
Source: San Jose Mercury News

San Jose on Monday moved one step closer to becoming the largest American city to ban not only plastic shopping bags — but also most paper ones.

Major grocery stores and big-box retailers would be prohibited from giving out plastic bags. Paper bags made with mostly recycled materials would be allowed, but only for a fee. Restaurants and nonprofits would be off the hook.

The San Jose City Council will now take up the issue as soon as November, thanks to a unanimous recommendation Monday by a four-member council committee. If approved it would take effect in 2011.

... The American Chemistry Council has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars working to defeat bans and fees in other cities and other groups have filed lawsuits on behalf of the plastic industry.

1. I like having a deposit like bottles - make it worth collecting and recycling 'em

but banning sounds over the top to me - but I'm open to changing my mind if it is really is the only way to keep them out of the environment

2. Make any mention of the so called Green Bags?
Which are really hard core plastic bags that unlike plastic bags don't rot in a landfill. The only green bags are made of cotton or uh Hemp. :)

3. This is a blow to the poor and homeless
Who need "Brown Paper Bags" to conceal their Forties of Laser Malt Liquor, Bull Ice, St Ides and Olde English,
when they swill them on the streets. Its against the law to drink an unskirted (unbagged 40 oz bottle) of these fine brews.

Only in CA------ now the cops can arrest these urban bon vivants.

St. Ides is a potent brand of malt liquor that is manufactured by the Pabst Brewing Company. The beverage contains 8.0-8.2% alcohol by volume, which puts it at the high end even for the high-alcohol malt liquor category of American lager beers. In addition to the plain St. Ides, the beer is also available in a number of "St. Ides Special Brews" that add a variety of flavorings, including mint and various fruit flavors, to the beer

he St. Ides brand has made use of celebrity endorsements by rappers in the past. Ice Cube was one rapper who was almost certainly compensated by St. Ides; he had an endorsement deal with the company and even wrote and performed several rhymes for St. Ides commercials. Other rappers who performed original songs for St. Ides commercials include 2Pac, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Nate Dogg, MC Eiht, Scarface, Wu-Tang Clan, Project Pat, King Tee, DJ Pooh, The Notorious B.I.G., Eric B & Rakim, EPMD, Method Man & Redman, Cypress Hill, RBL Posse, and The Geto Boys.

Olde English 800 (commonly referred to as OE, Old Gold, Olde E and 8-Ball) is a brand of malt liquor produced by the Miller Brewing Company (owned by SABMiller). It is available in a variety of serving sizes but is best known for its forty ounce (1.183 litre) bottle.
It is 5.9% alcohol by volume (ABV) in the eastern United States, 7.5% ABV in most western U.S. states and 8.0% ABV in Canada.

Olde English in music

The malt liquor has been referenced by numerous musicians, including 2Pac, Afroman, The Alkaholiks, Lucky Boys Confusion, Andre 3000, Big Daddy Kane, Beastie Boys, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Brokencyde, Brotha Lynch Hung, Christina Aguilera, X-Raided, D12, DJ Quik, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, The Game, Hollywood Undead, Jay-Z, Jedi Mind Tricks, Kid Sister, KMD, Kyuss, LL Cool J, MF Doom, N.W.A., Ol' Dirty Bastard, People Under The Stairs, The Roots, Run-D.M.C., Third Eye Blind, Too $hort, Trunks, Two Man Advantage, South Central Cartel, Umphrey's McGee, Leftover Crack, Amanda Palmer, The Low Budgets, Shaggy 2 Dope, The Mentors, and Kottonmouth Kings.
