Fed-up Marine has guns blazing to oust Democrats

SOMETHING IN THE AIR
Fed-up Marine has guns blazing to oust Democrats

'They're destroying this nation, and while I'm still breathing, I will not let it happen'

"Send a warrior to Congress."

"Does this look like a Rino?"

In the battleground of American political power, candidates for office tend to use every weapon at their disposal to be heard above the din.

Now, a U.S. Marine who helped lead the initial charge into Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein is taking that approach literally by brandishing his M-16 assault rifle in some eye-catching campaign fundraising ads.

"I'm taking full credit for that," says 28-year-old Jesse Kelly of Tucson, Ariz., a Republican seeking to boot Democrat Gabrielle Giffords from the U.S. House of Representatives. "If you're not going to get anyone's attention, you might as well not waste your time or money."

Sgt. Kelly, who is married and has a 9-month-old son, is splashing his spots across the Internet on high-profile sites such as the Drudge Report, and offering no apologies about the weapon imagery.

"I think people understand fully well that I'm serving my country," he said. "I'm in Iraq at war for my nation. I'm not posing in my bedroom
with a gun."

----

Whoa. Hold on a minute here. This is way over the line, isn't it?

He just like to play dress-up in his old soldier uniforms and pretend to be a tough guy. He's a total fool.

Who served so "playing dress up"? we should be careful on this one. If he is as crazy as the folks here say then let the people hammer him at the ballot box. He has a right to speak even if we don't like what he says.

42. Careful with what?
He is setting forth this image that he is still serving, and he isn't. He is dressing up in his previous uniform and being disingenuous. I have not said he doesn't have a right to dress how he so chooses. He has every right. And I have every right to point out that he is manipulating his image.

Can you imagine the blowback that the Democratic veterans would have received if they'd pulled the same styled stunt as this guy.

The tone of some however was as though he should be "shut up". I do not agree with the man however, criticizing a real combat vet as a nut (whether or not he is) is just giving the "right" ammo. As far as our side using vets like this unfournately....yes we do. John Kerry comes to mind.

75. I don't think he should shut up. I do think, however, that he is using a very dangerous message.
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 09:16 PM by Kerrytravelers
His message is basically, I'm here to get shit done. And I am armed. Given the escalating tenor of the townhall meetings, is this really a good idea? And when he loses, which he will, what will the reaction of his supporters be? We can see how the McCain/Palin supporters have managed to cope. They have incited all kinds of violence. And there have been a number of shootings because people think "Obama will take their guns away." This "campaign" is just more escalating of the violence. Not really a message that someone who wants to be in Congress should really be sending out there. Can you imagine him in Washington?

When I read the article, I understood that these were campaign pictures, and I interpreted that as meaning he posed for specific pictures for this specific purpose. Upon rereading, I may have made an assumption as to the original intent of the pictures, meaning he took them while in service and is now using these older pictures for a campaign. Again, however, he is using them to incite a specific emotion. In regards to comparing him to John Kerry, I really think there is a world of difference. Yes, there were pictures of Kerry in uniform. And yes, there were pictures of Kerry hunting. But I don't recall pictures of Kerry holding a gun with the slogans this guy is using.

Honestly, I'm not too worried about the rw coming here and using our words against us. They are welcomed to scour DU to their cold little hearts content. We can do the same. In the end, it is what the actual politician says that will matter. And in all honesty, this guy hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell.

Thanks for the interesting dialog.

Edited on Mon Aug-24-09 11:20 PM by cascadiance
He was also a vet and was a nut. Now one should be careful not to criticize him in ways that could backfire with those of the public that do like nationalistic symbolism and view critiques done improperly as being "unAmerican". But I think there's a way to be careful and still critique guys like this to make sure everyone sees the holes in his logic, without just attacking his nationalistic symbolism.

Waving his M16 around strikes me as a pompous show of dick-waving. The more you feel the need to brag about it while swaggering around grunting and thumping yourself on the chest, the less you probably know how to use it in a way that satisfies anyone except yourself.

Most of the ones who are this gung-ho hoo-ah when they're out of the service like this asshat are the ones who didn't amount to much when they were 'in country,' so they have to invent a badass legend for themselves. It'd be sad if it weren't so pathological.

91. Um, yes, that part was obvious, in more than one way. But the beginning of your post was mangled:
"He was a Marine.... Who served so "playing dress up"? The W in Who should not have been capitalized, as it is not the beginning of a new sentence, but will be read as such due to the capital letter and it being the start of the body of the message. And even if capitalized correctly, we have, "He was a Marine who served so "playing dress up"?

One can assume what you meant was "He was a marine who served, so how is it that he's "playing dress up"? But that's an extremely sloppy way to try and say that.

Then you forgot to capitalize the beginning of your next sentence, which is distracting and insulting to your readers, as are all of your lazy mistakes.

I understand that over in freeperville most aren't capable of expressing themselves clearly, which explains a lot. But, when you come here, try to keep up.

65. Oh boy
Unfortunately the pattern with "reasonable" conservatives like yourself seems to be that eventually, as you argue with your own party and are shouted down with ever-increasing absurdities, you find it impossible to continue to support the GOP. The Democratic party is not really the place for you either though. I'd much prefer it if real rational conservatives could kick out the crazies and retake the GOP.

But... you hate the insurance companies? You believe corporations must be regulated as strictly as possible? I think that's grounds for being kicked out of the GOP. How on earth do you define yourself as a conservative?

You don't sound like an extremist at all. The defining characteristic of the right is that they don't believe in common ground. They don't even believe in fair argument, and are not interested in any facts, only supporting the party line as loudly as possible.

I'm embarrassed to admit that many left wingers fit that ultra-partisan mold as well. It's easy, because you don't have to think at all. I'm pretty sure though that a much higher percentage exists on the right. They would HAVE to be non-thinkers in order to support the clearly bankrupt policies that their leaders put forth, which serve only to harm their interests AND ideals. And I'm sure there are rational people on the right who support their agenda, only because they believe some part of the bullshit lines about liberals being the problem with "conservative" policy never seeming to work out when it is tried over and over and over again.

But mostly people just want to yell at the enemy. That serves the interests of the powers that be very well.

Personally I've lost nearly all hope as to a reasoned, non-violent solution coming to pass. Collapse and civil war seem inevitable, and my only consolation in that regard is that the right will not find the left as weak (or lightly armed) as they think.

As to your question, I'd say that anarchy is inevitably tyranny. It can be said that every government on the planet exists in a state of anarchy. A strong government represents the opposite of anarchy, the combined voice and reason of the people... when it has not been completely corrupted and ruined, as has our current government. Without a strong and true government, powerful interests begin to throw their weight around as they see fit. And there is no means to stop them. That is what tyranny is.

All of us hate the powers that be. We know we are being robbed and slowly killed, but the right has been wildly misled as to how and by whom.

I loves me some constitution. However, I think perhaps our country is too big. I would like to see the US split into two or three new countries.

that he was either still active duty or possibly in the reserves. If so, then his use of his uniform and other military imagery is an absolute violation of military law, without question. But since it appears he isn't AD or Res, he has crossed no lines.

Your respondent further down appears to have morphed the 'line crossing' from the legal aspect under military law to the moral aspect of totin' guns in an ad, which was not the original intent of the 'crossed the line' comment. So one point for you, none for them.

67. And here's the campaign ad with John Kerry lugging an M-16 in Vietnam

its about 20 seconds into the 1 min clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6wpG2Xesbk&feature=PlayList&p=F02CF9FD40BE295A&index=5

Both sides use images of their war service to promote themselves.

Lay off...you have a lot nerve.

My post with John Kerry's ad toting an M-16 while at war is analogous to the ad in the OP which someone thought might have been out of line. I don't think it was in either case. I wasn't criticism Kerry for his campaign ad.

44. Now that I'm seeing this kind of stuff, I have to say
that after 8 incredible years of Bush, I'm rather proud of Democrats for how they've handled themselves. I mean, that administration was so retched, and so hypocritical, I cannot believe how well we behaved. Talk about mature and intelligent.

And so now that the nightmare is over, these dingbats come out of the woodwork...for what? What on earth are they irate about? Health care? Responsible foreign policy? Concern for the environment? All I can do is just wonder what some humans are all about.

50. An M-16 packing marine vs. Gabby? The dude's gonna need a bigger gun.
He hasn't quite learned not to pick fights unless he can win. Picking fights with some folks is dangerous.

Especially armed ones.

Armed ones who went to high schools that *required* genius-level IQ's for application (most don't make it past the testing phase).

She went on to Scripps, Cornell, picked up a Fulbright Scholarship (I assume she was bored and did it for fun, I'm not joking), and became a fellow at Harvard at the JFK school for government.

Youngest female AZ State Senator ever at the age of... 33. Went to US Congress at the ripe old age age of... 36.

She's a force to be reckoned with, and is likely going to be our first female president, if she wants it (maybe she'll get bored again and try it?).

Oh, and she's married to a Navy Captain, who flew 39 missions in desert storm, has 4,500+ hours in more than 50 different aircraft and over 375 carrier landings... but he since changed to a slightly faster/larger airframe. He's a space shuttle pilot, been up 3 times, one more mission planned in 2010.

appears to be what we called a M-4. Don't know what an AR-15 is as I never encountered one so I don't know if there is a difference and I apologize if they're the same thing. Certainly not a M-16 though.
