I actually saw Lou Dobbs tonight!!

See, when I'm working late at the office, I put on the film Koyaanisqaatsi (which may be seen on Youtube, although it has 5 or 6 30 second commercials(!!)), listen to the Philip Glass repetitive music - which is therapeutic - as I do all my chart work with the computer, and at the 1 hour and 3 minute mark, there's that asshole Dobbs, although much younger (1982 or so) on the TV, RIGHT BEFORE ALL THE TV'S BLOW UP!!

I couldn't tell you how excited I was that he was part of that sequence showing life out of balance...

Wow...

For those who haven't seen the film, rent it, find a 52 inch screen, turn the volume way up and be prepared for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

3. When I was 17, I was interviewing for an internship at a video production company.
I showed the guy my demo reel, and he wasn't very enthusiastic about it.

Then he showed me his demo reel.

When he finished, I asked him something like, "Did you need permission to use all that footage from Koyanaasqatsi?"

I don't think he expected anyone- let alone some kid off the street- to recognize where he'd stolen half his company's demo reel from.

And it wasn't just that he'd stolen footage- he'd also incorporated several of the original edits in the film as well.

Anyway, I ended up interning someplace better.

4. Great story! Thanks!!!
I saw it in the theaters when it came out and it was interesting: half the audience sat there enthralled, the other half wastrying to escape. Years ago when I first got married, I took my wife to U of PA to see Glass conduct the score while the film was playing...it was remarkable I thought. she hated it...my mom, who was a classical music enthusiast, couldn't stand it, and my brother, who was at one time a serious pianist, was appalled that I would love something like this.

I think it's terrific...

6. That movie literally changed my life.
In around '83, '84, I was relatively newly married, working in a hardware store (after dropping out of art school), and my (now ex-) wife says, hey, there's something on PBS that you would probably like, come check it out. She never saw the appeal, but she knew what I liked. I caught the last third of the movie, recorded it on VHS. I loved it so much that I went and bought the VHS to be able to see the whole thing and it inspired me to get back to pursuing a creative career. Which I did and 20 some years later I now am a partner in a design firm.

It just hit the right chord for me at the time. Particularly the Hopi translations at the end. I started reading up on the Hopi's philosophy and all kinds of things after that.

I think I've watched that movie in just about every format you can think of, VHS, Beta, Laserdisc, DVD, and now I even have it on my iPhone. Funny thing, I never saw it in a theater.

Great film.
