2. listen up, I went for a long walk on the beach yesterday. It was low tide and a large swath of wet
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 08:48 PM by KittyWampus
sand lay between the surf and the dunes. Even though I was walking fairly far away from the surf, I had a wave come up to my thighs while walking through what would be a rip channel when the tide came in.

That said, there were so many idiots walking up to the very edge of the surf and standing there. All it takes is for a few sets to pile up enough water and then one surge and those fools would have been washed out to sea.

The lifeguards shouldn't have allowed those people that close to the surf.

Edit- 7-8' surf which was rolling pretty good out at the sandbar

We used to go there after high school plays.

Don't remember if it was on Merrick Rd?

13. What were her parents or guardians THINKING.
I know that if they are alive right now, they wish they could change places with their daughter, but sightseeing at the beach when there is a hurricane offshore...

Sigh.

4. Further in the NYTimes story it says 5 people were swept to sea
20 people were on a platform built for viewing such storms when a rogue wave hit them.

Weird and very misleading, if not outright lie, of a headline. 5 people, not 20 were swept up in the wave. 3 were recovered right away and 2 were recovered until later. One young girl died.

It is so hard for a paper like the Times to get a headline right?

5. True about headline/text BUT those people shouldn't have been allowed there >>>
"The platform is 10 to 15 feet above the water line, and waves along the coast were running up to 12 feet during the afternoon, according to the Coast Guard"

Can't blame them but they need to be careful
