It was the breathless lead-in story for the first 7 minutes or so on the local news, KTVU, Ch.2 in Oakland last night.
This was in place of health care, swine flu, cash for clunkers, the economy, transit strikes, and as always, major crime in the Bay Area. These have dominated news here for the last month.
When I commented to my wife that yes, the torture story will return to the news come Monday, she said "What torture?"
I responded "You know, Cheney and Afghanistan and rendition flights and Blackwater and Gitmo, and justification for the fake wars, the memos released, etc."
She knew generally that those items have been bubbling up for a while and I reminded her about Cheney's big show in the media about a month ago, prior to Town Halls and Cash for Clunkers grabbing headlines, etc., and that how convenient that when Obama released some of the torture memos back then, Cheney felt compelled to hit the media with his daughter with a round of vigorous denials and additional retaliatory accusations that Obama was bad for security, etc. Kind of like a pre-emptive strike to set the tone.
She commented that it seemed so long ago. She works a lot on Veterans' issues at her job, specifically health care for returnees that have severe PTSD and being denied care for it, so she knows many veterans of Iraq personally and works with them daily. We have strong feelings about it and we can't wait to see justice done. When you see these kids up close and personal and hear some of the horror stories you really resolve to have payback for all this, what has been done to them and to innocent suspects sometime soon.
Just my dos centavos,
