Universal health care 'ungodly'

As a Christian, I'm getting tired of Democrats and those supporting universal health care coverage using Jesus and Scripture to support their own agenda. "Shouldn't you be helping your brother in need?" Yes, but they're missing the point. Jesus wasn't interested in making sure humans lived a few years longer. He wanted us to show love to each other so that others can come to know and love God. For instance, when a strung-out family member needed help, we supported her and showed her the love of Jesus. Now she has a beautiful relationship with God and is living a far better life. And we continue to help her.

How does raising my taxes to pay for some stranger's health benefits bring them closer to God? It doesn't. It makes them dependent on a government bent on wielding more power over its citizens. That, quite simply, is ungodly.

:freak:

3. I hate the Christian argument that some people suffering is "God's will"
I have read that in different forms in some of their newspapers and web sites and LTTEs from time to time... that some people suffer diseases and can't get health care for them and it's just "God's will." It's such bullshit yet they use it over and over again to oppose expansion of health care.

6. they pay more for a stranger's health benefits now
Because people without insurance go to emergency rooms and the cost is exorbitantly higher than to them than it would be under a public option. And their taxes wouldn't go up probably at all unless they were making over 250 thousand a year, and if by some reason they did go up, it wouldn't be nearly as high as the money they pay out of pocket for insurance premiums now. Unless they get Medicare, which in that case, this person can just go eff themselves because everybody else pays for their health care and they themselves are dependent on government and are, therefore, ungodly. But I am sure this person will opt out of Medicare according to their own principles now or in the future when they get it.

And just who would Jesus deny health care to?

9. No doubt, Jeebus would rather have poor sick people die.
Think about it: is there any evidence in the Bible of Jeebus trying to inspire those who have enough to help those who have little or nothing? Did J.C. ever urge us to heal the sick, take care of the downtrodden, give a cup of water to the thirsty, or lend a hand to those in need?

51. Did he say this for that matter?
Matthew 19:21

Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

I guess not because the way it looks to me, he said something along the lines of sucking the poor and downtrodden until they are empty shells and stepping over them in the gutter.

My favourite one is Proverbs 23:2 and I would love to quote it to John Hagee in a public forum:

...and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.

i'm "blu"- and i think the letter quoted in the OP is written by someone who is very confused, and who is trying to justify being selfish behind a twisted but very common view of Christ's message and teachings.

I'm fine with you not being a fan of "Christ'ians"- i admit i'm often not very fond of many of the people who hide behind that word too.

I would only remind these Mammon-serving pseudo-Christians out there (and you know who you are!), that "...Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." Matthew 25:40

20. I saw a couple of signs on Elm Hill Pike in Nashville today that read "Breast Cancer Yard Sale."
How does allowing an industry; having nothing to do with health care, to profit from the American People's illness and injury bring the people closer to God? It doesn't. It does make the American Peoples' supposed representative government more dependent on corporate power via lobbying/bribery. Those corporations; are bent on wielding power over the citizens but they think don't of us as citizens, to them we're just customers or consumers to be sold a product, candidate or down the river.

If there is a God, the current system must be unGodly.

Thanks for the thread, Kadie.

Some time ago, I was debating with an evangelical who said much the same thing. I'd been relying on the Sermon on the Mount to reach her with my point that it's our duty to help one another, but she had a different twist on it.

She had been an officer in the Salvation Army and stated that all the charity work they do for the indigent "is merely a lure or an afterthought," as their sole reason for existing is "to snare souls for Christ."

For that reason, she was dead set against any government-run aid to people -- welfare, food stamps, health care, or anything else -- because it short-circuited the "good work" of routing the needy through soul-snatching organizations like her Salvation Army.

32. What IS 'God' according to the bible itself?
LOVE.

What kind of love sees a brother in need and turns away?

Did Jesus heal the man at the pool of Bethesda to "bring him closer to God" ? or because the man needed healing?

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress" (James 1:27)."

What does God require of you? asks the 'bible' "..to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?"
(Mic 6:8)

As someone who calls themself a "Christ'ian what about your requirement according to this:

Remind your people to submit to the government and its officers. They should be obedient, always ready to do what is good.

They must not speak evil of anyone, and they must avoid quarreling. Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone.

Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled by others and became slaves to many wicked desires and evil pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy. We hated others, and they hated us.

But then God our Savior showed us his kindness and love.

He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit.

He generously poured out the Spirit upon us because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did.

He declared us not guilty because of his great kindness. And now we know that we will inherit eternal life.

These things I have told you are all true. I want you to insist on them so that everyone who trusts in God will be careful to do good deeds all the time. These things are good and beneficial for everyone.

Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These kinds of things are useless and a waste of time.

the hypocrisy is everywhere- but that doesn't mean Jesus' message doesn't apply.

Love one another, as He loved- willing to lay down your life for each other.

Walk your talk.

Wouldn't God want someone to help the ill stranger? Wouldn't that be Godly? Does the twit think that Jesus or God would care HOW he/she helped the stranger?
