Alternatives to DU?
Time to find somewhere else to spend my spare time.

Please list the good political boards or other sites to waste away hours.

Thanks.

This is the second one today. Of course, then there's that guy with the blue dog painting in his sig line who hasn't seemed to have posted since we figured out that the Blue Mongrel Feral Fuckpups aren't our friends, so I guess that makes three so far....

5. Good Political Boards are
CommonDreams.org, ZNet, and AK Press which is a book distribution company that distributes independent, politically and culturally subversive literature. There are also discussion boards there, but they are not for the meek: short attention spans and the monosyllabic need not apply.

Another site where you are able to post is GregPalast.com who is a renegade journalist: he has exposed a good deal of government corruption, including the theft of the 2000/2004 presidential election.

Adbusters and Flag.Blackened.net are also great sites for spending spare time. They are a good read for anyone who is looking for alternative ways of looking at this nation's infrastructure.

Hope this helps!

6. Believe me
I know the feeling well. Although I've been lurking on DU for several years, I just started participating here because I left another board where I had been a moderator for many years. My former "home" was taken over by Far-Leftist bloggers, because all of the sane Liberal bloggers had slowly migrated away.

My initial impression of DU (aside from the fact that it is much bigger than most other Democratic communities) is that there is a VERY diverse membership here, and many more right-leaners are allowed than I am used to. I suppose that is an extension of the "big tent" philosophy. I've also noted that there is a much higher degree of incivility and "Internet rage" here than I've seen on other political boards, including what I've observed on Free Republic. In all fairness, however, FR does not allow dissent and a free exchange of ideas.

I guess that the grass may be greener elsewhere, but somehow I doubt it. I plan to stick around for a while, and try to stay out of trouble...;-)

That's a pretty recent development, as is the willingness to tolerate psychotic levels of rudeness that you have observed.

24. diamonds are found in a lot of coal
I have been a member of DU for over ten years, intermittently. Democratic Underground used to be a true discussion board, and I had many very engaging discussions here once upon a time, with members who were not just "confronting" issues and "challenging" beliefs, but were thinking and speaking about them intelligently and articulately, if sometimes, passionately.

There is a good deal of "venting," here now, and it has crowded the Discussion Boards over the years. As a consequence, it has taken on the form of our media: it resembles CNN Headline News or CrossFire, where there are quotes and anecdotes shouted over and around the topics.

On a lighter note, diamonds are found in a lot of coal: one must be patient. There are a few really lovely posts from contemplative and considerate people I have had the pleasure of reading here, as well as on other political boards. It gives me hope.

I am one that does not mind labels at all: since opinions have become entitled, no one troubles themselves with accurate definitions and true meanings when they use labels, hence they have become obsolete. (laughter) Having said that, I am not a right or left-leaner, nor do I care who is. The cause of most incivility between people is inattention and indifference. Neither of those characteristics requires one to have a political affiliation: indeed, the only requirement is an asshole. (laughter)

25. Thanks
for the enlightenment. If I seem overly obsessed about the Far-Left, it's just that I can only take so much obnoxious extremism that precludes reasoned discussion. I've found that biting my tongue is not good for my disposition.

I too have found some great discussions, and some wonderful people during my short stay on DU. Looking for the diamonds in the coal pile may be time consuming, but well worth the effort.

Aloha from Maui...;-)

Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 08:58 AM by No Elephants
DU does have a range, though, including a few who I feel are about as conservative Democratic as Pat Buchanan.

I used to think I was a centrist Democrat until I started posting here. Now, I think I am a liberal who happens to be liberal and hate wasting money.

I hope you enjoy posting here.

44. yup.
it's here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules_detailed.html

the sites you are describing have a bizarre obsession with DU.

"Do not post messages that give publicity to websites that have little purpose other than to smear, disrupt, or complain about Democratic Underground. Currently there are only three websites that fall into this category. Their addresses are not listed here because we do not wish to give them publicity. They are easily identified by their bizarre obsession with Democratic Underground."

I don't mind people leaving, but why do they always have to make a dramatic exit?

I wasn't here when Walt Starr did it HIS way, but have read it several times in the period I've been here, posted by others. Anything less than jumping into the shark's mouth is not really a Good Bye Cruel World post. When I read that, I imagined Skinner as Jaws, suddenly coming out of the water and swallowing Starr in one bite, before disappearing into the ocean as quickly as he appeared.

43. I've tried a few but not much luck. I like reading other posters opinions
and beliefs presented in a rational manner, those from the left and the right. I will not discount a rational post from either side and like it may contain a link to some information I was not aware of so could not have taken into consideration regarding my stance on an issue. In one way I like that DU has the entire spectrum of those on the left but on the other hand it does get a bit annoying hearing those further left proclaim if you don't agree completely with X,Y and Z issues you are not Democrat. Or the childish references of "freeptard" and other nonsense that I don't think is called for and certainly not conductive to any form of rational discussion, Reps pull this same crap, funny how each side is bashing the other but act just alike. One of the sites I liked for a while began to be over run with childish insults and zero debate between the fanatical wingnuts and the zealot moonbats becoming a place to whine and cry rather than intelligent debate.

45. Other sites to waste your time away at...
I waste my time in these places:

www.icanhascheezburger.com and its connected sites, especially failblog.org
www.bbc.co.uk/news - for some actual real news.
www.slashdot.org - cos i'm a nerd.
www.facebook.com - for Mafia Wars mainly, and sometimes some discourse - but it's banned at work so not here right now.
www.radio-info.com - because I'm interested in the radio industry.
www.greensboring.com - local discussion forum, with their resident far leftie and far rightie.
www.avsforum.com - for stuff around home theatre and especially HDTV.
www.transdiffusion.org - cos I'm again a nerd, a nut about the history of UK broadcasting...
www.digitalspy.co.uk - talk about the digital switch over of TV in the UK.

Political boards? DU is pretty much it for me. I have registered at Democrats.com and occasionally fly by dailykos.com and huffingtonpost.com but sorry I guess I'm what the freepers would call a DUmmie.

Mark.
