Nashville lawyer nominated for U.S. judgeship: Obama asks Stranch to fill appellate spot

Jane Branstetter Stranch
Nominee for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit
55 years old.
To fill vacant - seat 16, formerly held by Judge Martha Craig Daughtrey who was nominated by William J. Clinton on August 6, 1993.

Nashville attorney Jane Branstetter Stranch has been nominated by President Barack Obama to become a federal judge on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Stranch, 55, has practiced primarily in the federal courts for 30 years. She is a partner at Branstetter Stranch and Jennings, a Nashville law firm founded by her father, Cecil Branstetter. She has taught labor law at Belmont University and served on the AFL-CIO Lawyers Coordinating Committee.

If she makes it through the judicial confirmation process, Stranch will join a court second only to the U.S. Supreme Court in terms of judicial authority.

"I am very honored to be chosen. I bring a great deal of litigation experience in a number of different courts,'' Stranch said. "I think that experience would be helpful.''

Rep. Jim Cooper, a Nashville Democrat, praised Branstetter's nomination in a statement Friday.

"Jane Branstetter Stranch brings years of legal experience to the federal bench," Cooper said.

"She has two degrees from Vanderbilt, a long background in employment law and is a highly respected member of the Tennessee Bar. Her sharp mind and experience with complex legal issues will serve her well on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals."
