Grenade launcher among items seized in Glassboro arrest
by Pete McCarthy, The Gloucester County Times
Friday August 14, 2009, 4:58 PM

GLASSBORO -- A grenade launcher is what a 50-year-old borough man was trying to sell to an undercover officer when he was arrested this week, state police said Friday.

Horace Dixon Jr. was apprehended in the parking lot of a Glassboro bowling alley on Thursday after ramming his vehicle into an unmarked police car. There were no injuries in the crash.

The man was trying to escape after being caught in the act, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Inside his vehicle was a 37mm projectile launcher with ammunition that he had allegedly arranged to sell to an undercover state police officer.

"The weapons sold to our undercover trooper have one primary use, and that's to kill people," said Colonel Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. "I believe, without any equivocation, that murders have been averted by keeping these weapons off the streets."

5. More dishonesty, erroneous reporting and ignorance from the media.
What they're calling a "grenade launcher", is actually 37mm flare launcher (I'm surprised that they reported the caliber correctly).

Perfectly legal to own, even in NJ (assuming the website is up to date)...

8. Of course, nobody's reloading lethal rounds for those 37mm
launchers. No way...

http://www.okiebigbores.com/

Even though the stuff is available to do this, there's a STERN warning on the site not to make any lethal rounds with their supplies. A STERN warning, I tell you! They even give instructions on how NOT TO MAKE projectile rounds using their supplies. DON'T DO THIS!

Give me a break.

Search Google for reloading 37mm

17. Thanks for the claification...
"The 37mm Flare/Gas launcher is popular with hunters, boaters, pyrotechnic enthusiasts and those into preparedness. It is not considered a firearm, and is not subject to the Gun Control Act of 1968."

Now the alarmists can calm the hell down. :hi:

Most folks use 12ga marine flares in an adapter, though you can make your own smoke rounds for them, no license or paperwork required.

Just goes to show the craziness of NJ firearms laws again (remember the police chief getting in a tizzy over a pump action shotgun?)

That must be a pretty common use of a grenade launcher. :silly:

12. Good Gawd.
My husband has family in Glassboro - the fam's trying to figure out whether they know this guy or not. They do know some Dixon's but this guy would need to be black and live on/near Stanger Ave.

No photos, race or other identifying info coming out of any of these stories.

Now I'm curious as hell.

15. They're pretty common
A lot of the SKS's have them on them. You can get a SKS for around 150.00. Dunhams sporting good had them on sale for 89.00 a while ago.

The two near the bottom have the grenade launchers on them.

20. Bwahahaahaa! 37mm "grenade launcher", you say???
Edited on Sat Aug-15-09 03:33 PM by MercutioATC
37mm launchers are perfectly legal under federal law because they're flare launchers.

If the man in the story had homemade anti-personnel ammunition for the launcher, however, that's illegal.
