You misconstrued my reaction.
Vick did his time.

Philly is a big challenge against the NY Giants, MY team.

I wonder how McNabb feels about this.

120. Just because Vick did his time doesn't mean he should ever play pro football again.
This sends the most disgusting message possible to the youth of America: You can be a low-down, contemptable skank, but as long as you potentially will bring in the dough, all is forgiven.

It's revolting. And it's another reason why I don't follow professional sports. Money will buy you out of hell in professional sports. Blech.

There are many more deserving waiting for thier chance.

It's not like he was on steroids and playing baseball or something. He inflicted horrific pain on another living creature.

Blech is right.

Excuse the fuck out of me if I don't give a pass to a fucking monster with no compassion for the life of another living being.

147. The headline for the Philadelphia Daily News today
was "Hide Your Dog". The beat reporter for Philadelphia sports was on ESPN this morning and he was saying that on sports radio in Phily it was about 95 percent against this and 5 percent for Vick playing there. The backlash has already begun. Unless he performs way beyond what a guy who has been out of the league for 3 seasons is expected to do, he will be gone before the end of the season.

90. he did his time
i can respect that and if the NFL wants to give him a chance, that's fine with me.

Also, the NFL is hardly a collection of moral people. It's a collection of football players. people who watch pro football want to see good football players. whether or not they are morally pure is not much of a consideration.

vicks did some despicable shit. and he was punished for it.

i'm in law enforcement. i have no problem with punishing violent criminals. it shouldn't follow that they shouldn't be given a second chance. he did his time.

109. just as you are, I am entitled to my opinion, and while I agree that
Vick served his sentence, I am opposed to him getting back into pro football. No one would be depriving him of a living. I guarantee you that if he never played football again, there are plenty of idiots out there, probably some television executives who would hire Vick for a lot of money. If nothing else, he could go sell insurance. A lot of old ex-athletes have done that, and they aren't even ex-cons. Playing in the NFL is not a right. It's a privilege. In my opinion he abused that privilege.

114. i agree
it's a privilege for people who are GOOD AT FOOTBALL?

why does it bother you that he will be playing football? god knows it can't tarnish the reputation of pro football. i'm not sure what could do that. maybe if they hired some seal clubbers or something.

he didn't abuse the privilege of playing in the NFL. what he did had nothing to do with the NFL. pete rose is an example of somebody that abused the privilege of his sports body.

fwiw, i'm pretty libertarian. i don't give a flying fuck if athletes take performance enhancing drugs. it makes the game better.

if Vicks had been pullin' some scandal involving the NFL, i'd agree he should never play again.

even if Vicks committed murder, assuming he could still play after serving his time (maybe with lots of geritol), i would have no problem with the NFL hiring him.

i deal with felons all the time. people who have done some evil shit. vicks did some evil shit, and he paid the price.

imo, fair play is fair play. he was punished, and now he should play.

imo of course

with bad boys and slapped wrists. Reminds me of the guy who dumped his trash at an illegal dump because well, "It was already there, so what would a little more hurt?

As for addressing the issue of talent, believe it or not, there are plenty of super talented kids who deserve a shot at the pros. Which one isn't going to get the chance because of Michael Vick?

119. the sport is tarnished
absolutely true. but at least we are not dishonestly pretending that just because somebody is good at throwing or catching a ball that bounces funny, that this makes them a hero or a role model.

i just want to keep the honesty there. the NFL should be about the best football players, and it generally is. disqualifying somebody for a past criminal act that they did their time for, seems overly punitive to me. and again, i'm speaking as a cop who has put people away for years for all sorts of heinous offenses. i'm hardly a bleeding heart when it comes to criminals and many them (not all) are frankly scumbags.

i'm saying that the NFL should try to encourage their athletes to be more responsible off the field. but the idea that we don't give people a second chance just seems very unjust to me.

you are right, if michael vicks left, that's a slot somebody else could fill.

snip...

Sponsors including KFC, Comcast, Sprint, Sovereign Bank, Aquafina, Mastercard, Verizon Wireless, Lincoln Financial(owners of the Eagles Stadium), Pepsico, Dunkin Donuts and more are all being targeted by protests and boycotts by anti Michael Vick sites such as the Campaign to Sack Michael Vick started in 2007, which at that time focused its attentions on leveraging direct sponsors of Michael Vick to remove their sponsorship of the quarterback before he had even been convicted of a crime. That ultimately led to the revocation of those sponsorships which cost Michael Vick as much as $250 million in deals by many estimates.

133. To a kid who sees
the adulation, the money, the lifestyle etc. they are a role model. Kids want to grow up and be like their heroes. Selling Jerseys with certain players numbers is big business. Coca-Colas most popular commercial was of a star-struck kid confronting Mean Joe Green. We all know the story of the kid confronting Shoeless Joe Jackson; "Say ir ain't so Joe!" To impressionable kids, they are heroes. Role models.

We set athletes on a pedestal. If we didn't do this, professional sports wouldn't be a multi-billion dollar business.

Wal-Mart may not hire him because of his status as a convicted felon and especially when they found out what he was convicted for. But the NFL has no problem with it. Dante Stallworth killed someone, got 24 days in prison and banned from the NFL for a year. I am sure next season he will give a tearful presser and be reinstated. Sad really.

ARE role models. Kids want to be just like their sports heroes(even if there is nothing heroic about them.) That's why specific number jerzeys are big business. That's why the Coke commercial with Joe Green was so successful. Why Air Jordans were so successful. And why other Athletes get endorsements and shoe lines.

Kids see all the adulation, the money, the lifestyle. They may not want to be role models. But, by being in the public eye, they are. That reaaly is part of the job.

Not very many, far as I can tell. I think he learned and taught a valuable lesson to the youth of this country. The world is filled with people who made mistakes and turned their life around. Just because he's on TV every week doesn't make him infallible and I'm certain he didn't work his entire career to be somebody's 'role model.'

that's an odious argument and is used to justify all sorts of govt. intrusion, regulation, etc. from censorship to hysterical drug bans (anti-ephedrine campaign comes to mind, which was later overruled by the circuit court thank god), etc.

i don't want some kind of moral purity code for pro athletes. athletics would cease being about athletics.

example: i don't care how much of an asshole that yusain bolt might be. let's say we find out tomorrow that he garrots baby bunnies. he is still the fastest man in the world.

vicks did an evil thing. what is dispositive here imo is that he PAID for his crime.

174. i think that's awesome frankly,
because it helps circumvent the anti-mj propaganda so popular these days. i'm a cop who supports decrim of mj. i know from personal experience that there are tons of people who are productive members of this society who happen to enjoy an occasional joint.

the fact that one of the most dominant athletes ever can also enjoy an occasional hit of MJ is a positive step towards countering the anti-drug propaganda.

and fwiw, i am not saying that MJ is a "good" thing, nor do i think its benign and harmless like many NORML advocates propagandize. i simply acknowledge it is very safe, and not addictive

The humane society doesn't publicize the events but he has been doing quite a bit of community outreach usually in low-income neighborhoods where they usually never see NFL players come and visit. He's made several appearances in the last couple months and I don't have a link at this time but the Humane Society is looking at this as a good opportunity as what they said Philadelphia has a big dogfighting program and praised his ability to reach out to kids is an audience the Humane Society typically doesn't reach. But forget all the work he is doing to reverse the problem, let's all hope his knees get blown out.

you are comparing the position of mayor to the position of an NFL player.

NFL players aren't given political power. they are athletes. there are lots of scumbags in the NFL. they aren't role models. they are athletes. this is about entertainment and business, not all this absurd moralizing.

but heck, even a convicted felon can get elected mayor. ask buddy cianci or everybody's famous crack smoker.

At least in this city when the powers that be make stupid decisions we let them know it loud and clear.

130. Damn Skippy!! Sounds like Reid wanted this for personal reasons:

SNIP
He said, "At this phase in my life, I'm big on second chances."

It was a reference to the legal issues of his two sons, Garrett and Britt - the drugs, the incarcerations, all well-publicized, all personally wrenching for Reid and his family. It was Reid offering a rare window into his heart. He is a man who does not often do that, who does not tell many personal stories, who does not open himself up to that kind of public introspection.

SNIP

On the night when the Eagles announced that they had signed Vick to a one-year contract with a club option for a second year - the same Michael Vick who did 18 months in prison for his involvement in a dogfighting operation - Reid opened his heart again. It was a stunning news conference, so unReidlike - even if he did start with injuries.

In it, the coach acknowledged that Vick has been on his mind for months and years. He said that Vick got into trouble at about the same time his sons got into trouble, and that he followed Vick's story from afar and compared it to what his sons were enduring. It was as open and as human as Reid has ever been at an interview podium, and it was clear that not only was this Reid's decision, first and foremost - but that his personal life opened him to the possibilities.

At one point Thursday night, he was asked whether he might not have been so open if he had not seen his sons, and the mistakes they made, and what they went through. He said: "I don't know that. I would hope that I would be, just like I hope the fans would be."

SNIP--more wankery at link

http://www.sacbee.com/846/story/2108587.html

Great. Because Andy Reid can't deal with the two junkies who are his sons--who both got sweeeeeet deals for their crimes, the Iggles get Michael Vick.

Jebus Christ on a trailer hitch....

Not for any good reason, but because Virginia Tech is playing its first game against Alabama in the Georgia Dome, and signing Vick would effectively confer home-field advantage to my beloved Hokies.

As for the troubled past of the Vicks who have passed through Virginia Tech, I say, "Vick who? We've got Tyrod Taylor now!"

62. I like the second one!!
My bulldog "attacked" my horse out of concern over my child's well being. The horse was rearing up between me and my daughter the dog who had been raised around horses for his whole life, saw this as an act of aggression towards my daughter and swooped in and caught him. By nature they are bred to "hang on" and the anatomy of his bite is what made the injury to the horse so bad, esp when the horse thrashed about with the dog still hanging to his leg. We also have a JackRussel terrier who has bitten more people and other animals than my bully ever has. And on any given day my bulldogs are just like the dog mentioned in the second link. Big slobberin' babies.

But when people like Vick intentionally use these dogs in such a horrible manner, it only furthers the misconceptions that people have about them. No bad dogs, just irresponsible owners.

BTW.. the horse healed just fine, thankfully.

Why should people rot for doing something bad, because they did something bad? Especially when they've paid the price for their failure?

saw that. I also saw it was only two years. And that he plays so bad he won't be back. He'll get his full karma sometime soon, I hope, and serving time will only be the start of that, not the end result.

The one thing which makes me more angry is that there are so many others out there that keep harming animals and there is no punishment for most of them. And even worse, those who DO get punished, are only for very short durations. We need consistent laws, punishments and outcomes. I think that across the board this should be true, because state laws are so different that I could be let go for jaywalking in one state, and put in jail in another. If we can't get our shit together in all the parts of the country, some very wrong people will get the impression that they do as they please instead.

Vick was a solid football player. I am glad he has a chance to get back in the game. It sucks that he lost all of his money, but I am hopeful that he can make the best of the few short years he has left in the nfl.

By the way, I could care less about the "crime" he committed. Personally, I think he should have been given a stiff fine. Jail time? Absurd!

They guy viciously tortured and killed animals for profit that he didn't even need.

He served his time so he is free to live his life, but I can't believe an NFL team was dumb enough to sign him. I believe (and hope) the backlash will be massive.

As far as I am concerned, Philly no longer has a professional sports team......shame on that city.

143. And never persuaded me that he regrets anything other than having been caught.
And certainly doesn't seem to have been treated for his love of animal torture.

He did his time, which was a great inconvenience to him, and paid his fines, which weren't, but I have seen nothing like remorse or atonement. Considering the depth of the solipsism implied by his complicity in animal torture, I don't understand why he is allowed to walk the streets--any more than I understand letting CIA/Blackwater/military torturers return to society.

125. There is no legal reason to deny him another NFL career.
Hopefully a very short NFL career. I see a lot of very huge, very angry NFL players with beloved pets. I wouldn't deny him his job but I sincerely hope for crippling tackles, eye-gouges, tripping, lots of UR, refs "not seeing it", fans smearing his car in dog food and blood. I hope fans throw things at him and and he hears an entire stadium chanting, "VICK'S A PIECE OF SHIT!" and I hope to one day to see the youtube video of his brutal, career-ending injury.

He did his time but he deserves to be spit on everyday for the rest of his life.

Regardless of the endless "he did his time" arguments, he still lied to the faces of the Falcons' owner and the NFL commissioner when initially asked about the whole dog scandal. The time he did was in response to a criminal conviction, not NFL-related misconduct.

NFL Suspends Donte Stallworth for the Season
14-Aug-2009
Written by: Lindsey Weedston

Receiver is punished for off-the-field misconduct.

Cleveland Browns receiver Donte Stallworth has been suspended without pay for one year after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter.

According to the Washington Times, the player struck and killed a pedestrian with his car on March 14. On June 16 he was sentenced to 30 days in jail, two years of house arrest, and eight years probation.

N.F.L. Commissioner Roger Goodell officially suspended Stallworth, telling him in a letter that "The N.F.L. and N.F.L. players must live with the stain that you have placed on their reputations." The New York Times wrote that Stallworth may not participate in any team activities during the 2009 season.

The Kansas City Star reported that the receiver has expressed remorse for his actions. He said in a statement that “I urge N.F.L. fans not to judge N.F.L. players or me based on my tragic lapse in judgment. I am a good person who did a bad thing.”

Stallworth will be allowed to rejoin the team after the 2010 Super Bowl.

179. Well,
if I were the commish I'd have banned Stallworth and Leonard Little for life. I think lying to the faces of a team owner and the league commish is worth a year's suspension, and killing someone while under the influence should (in my view) be a lifetime ban from the league (I'd go with life in prison as well).
