Facebook - I Refuse
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 05:16 PM by Jack_Dawson
I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on earth who refuses to create a Facebook profile. When will I want to relinquish all my privacy?

I do have to Twitter for work so there's that...

Edited because of grammatical horror - thx Slampoet

I actually arrange my time so I can work in the widget factory three times a day. I only hope I don't get so obsessive I wake up at 2 AM to weave cloth or whatever the hell my job is there... Well one good thing about it...at least the Widget boss doesn't look over my shoulder...ha ha

And Farmville...yeah...there's something satisfying about harvesting different kinds of crops. Saved up a bunch of money and bought a barn the other day....wheeeeeee!!!!!!!!! :7

30. Very true!
It's as private or as public as people want to make it.

Some people post every. single. boring. detail. of their lives.

"Work today" "Came home" "Had baloney sandwich"

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... :boring:

then there are the ones who post cryptic messages. Like..."People really need to lighten up"

then there's the classmates from High School nearly 40 years ago that you don't even remember but they figure they'll be your friend because you both went to the same school. You each know you're not gonna ever say two words to each other, but what the hell...

the best ones are the family fights. I have a bunch of cousins I've never met but hey, we have the same last name, so what the hell...anyway, it's sort of amusing to see the family feuds going on in a distant part of the family that I don't have to deal with.

Anyway, you're right...people can be as public or private as they want. I like going there for the games and virtual shopping sprees on Yoville.

I do sometimes.

I can't really say I'm all that nostalgic about High School either, especially since I was not one of the "cool" kids.

Although it did give my poor ego a bit of a boost when one of the "cool" girls sent me a friend request and actually does communicate with me. Turns out she's a lot nicer 40 years later than I thought she was in school...

Most of my friends aren't into that though, aside from one tangential one who's the type that has multiple chihuahuas to match her purses. (I'm not kidding.)

I use mine as a combination of tertiary email account and Weird URL Storage Device. I like posting a couple of odd links there every day or so for the sake of raising eyebrows; the reactions can be fun.

except she's the type to put the dogs in the purse (along with her bottle of Kahlua) and dress the poor things up in stupid little chihuahua outfits. She's got two of those little rat-dogs, may All Powerful Dog have mercy on them...she would have made a rotten mother to a human child; she's an even worse one to animals....

54. That rings a bell
Oh, the purses are chihuahua carriers. This one treats them well - hell, probably treats them too well; you know how neurotic chihuahuas can get - but it just leaves me sitting there, looking at those, looking at another friend's rough collie, and marveling that the two things are part of the same species.

I dunno, I think I'll always understand Kids These Days or the new tech fads or whatever else far more easily than I'll ever understand some dog breeds. ;)

104. You know what I found out recently about dogs?
and this sort of surprised me...

It was on "Life After People", which is one of the Discovery or Science channel shows...anyway, what they said was that without human interference/presence, dogs would go feral and all would end up looking pretty much the same eventually...about the size of a Whippet, and around 35 lbs.

With that in mind it's probably hypocritical of me to consider collies or labs to be more "real dogs" compared to chihuahuas or the like, but oh well. ;)

I still need to see that show one of these days. Discovery in Canada suuuuuuucks, so we don't get the fun shows.

44. It's not a very tech-literate crowd here
There was this huge bout of pants-wetting paranoia here about a week or go when people found out that Web cookies exist and started howling about the fourth amendment or what-have-you. If someone has even a fraction of a clue about basic web security, doesn't volunteer things they don't want to volunteer, and reads their terms of service on sites to know what they're getting into, they don't have much to worry about.

Since the TOS change debacle some months back, Facebook's going farther out of its way to be open about how it deals with privacy/content issues than I've ever seen a site like that go, too. I dunno how well their approach will work in the longrun, but I like some of the stuff they're trying and give them props for even the attempt.

The short version is that people are confusing them with keyloggers.

ACLU's throwing a gale-force tantrum over their existence, people were acting like Obama's going to use them to steal all our privacy, etc. It was more than a little sad.

53. No reason it can't be both!
I just really wish people would use something other than the media or press releases as their source of information about insert-technology-here. It just isn't that difficult, and most things in either format tend to just be FUD these days. On the other hand, the ACLU's the one that was making "these are really keylogger" type claims, and if someone thinks it's intrinsically Republican to ever disagree with a word they say... agh.

I'd be less depressed about it here (DU's average age is close to twice my own, going by a couple of polls I'd seen) if I didn't run into even worse silliness in my graduate school classes last year. Sigh.

63. Touche!
I find the age distribution here fascinating, really; it causes a fairly impressively different perspective here than a lot of other forums I'm around on, and is one of the reasons I stick around. It's just a wee bit more depressing when most of the students in my digital history class were self-described luddites actively offended at having to learn about technology.

I really get the impression that that was a case of not wanting to get facts straight; it's easier to extrapolate to the absolute worst case scenario, decide that's what's going on, and go apewire based on it. I've been around the net in one way or another since '92, and that really seems to be the default attitude when one group or another decides to react to something on it. Of course, there's some drooling optimism at the other extreme that I'm hardly innocent of, but I do wish when it came to technology people would put at least a tenth of the amount of fact-checking energy that they pour into your average forwarded email before going off.

I have reconnected with family and friends I haven't seen for years. You don't have to give ANY information about yourself if you don't want to. And it's not actually public information...it's only available to those in your network of friends, so supposedly they'll know most of this info already anyway. I know a lot of people don't like to Facebook just out of contrariness. It's cool to be a Luddite. I'm not one of those people. I don't fear technology.

33. I refused for the longest time, then lightening zapped my server
where I kept my wedding albums. As a last (free) resort, rather than running out and buying another server, I transferred all my wedding albums from backups to FB. Once I learned how to block all the sillyass pillowfights and hugs and kisses and farmville and yoville and ... well, crappage that FB throws at you, I found I could use it to my advantage. There are about a hundred privacy switches you have to learn to (1) find and (2) set, but once you've got them lined up ("view as another user" is your friend!) you can be about as private as you wish.

I figure, I'm already here, I mezzwell go 'head on. The up-side is I reconnected with a lot of my buds from the old DNC KA blog who also left when the mods quit modding.

I'm always baffled by people who feel the need to explain why they reject a certain bit of technology. Why do you think creating a FaceBook account requires that you relinquish all your privacy?

technology, from communications and computer applications to diagnostic and therapeutic technology. I could not do what I do without it as in my line of work I am one of those on call 24/7 and have been for the past 10 years. What I don't have to do is adopt every faddish social networking tool that comes along. To each his own. Enjoy. I have no problem with that.

So, your assumptions are a major FAIL. I am not superior, just selective and I hardly think the world is passing me by if I elect to pass on facebook.

you can post a reply that is coherent. Why, pray tell, would you equate "old school" (i.e., old fashioned) with "gangsta," except to use a ridiculous term to try and make yourself sound "hip."

It is these kinds of ridiculous discussions I prefer to avoid. Facebook is full of this crap. Thanks for making my point, though.

Oh, and you might take to heart the fact that many people find the constant "friend me" requests to be fairly pathetic and intrusive--sort of like the friggin chain letter emails someone in the office always finds it necessary to send to five zillion people in and out of the workplace.

77. Old School has a whole separate connotation and I assumed you knew that
I'll stand by the coherency of my post though, as several others seemed to understand it perfectly and without clarification.

I'd say, on average, I spend zero to five minutes a day on Facebook and/or Twitter. As I've said in the past, both tools are simply that...tools. Facebook and Twitter are an easy, fast way to inform people of things. I use them to let people know I may be doing something social. I used them to do grass roots organization for Obama. Your screed that I originally replied to indicates you have either no clue at all how either tool works, or you're being intentionally obtuse. You pick.

And your incoherency stands apparently. Childish use of the term "old school." Very juvenile.

But since you are so concerned, I am exposed to twitter--as well as most of the other emerging communication and social networking tools. I stand by my issues with Facebook and the annoying way in which those who use it expect everyone else to do so. Enjoy, but stop thrusting this crap on everyone else.

A message board like this is designed to discuss current events, politics etc. We can have lengthy debates and we can exchange arguments. Somehow I don't think that's anything like Twitter. Or are you here to know what I've been up to today?

89. You were not asking me.. but I'll weigh in on your question
nonetheless. Yes, I am cautious about what I say on all forms of verbal communication and on the internet. I don't hold any illusions that someone somewhere can find far more out about me than I like. Bush destroyed any illusions of electronic privacy. Yet, I don't make it any easier for them than I have to.

Identity theft all but destroyed several friends of mine. It is highly stressful trying to get it all straightened out, time consuming, and often only temporary. One colleague of mine had a recurrence of issues 8 years later and had to repeat all the steps she'd taken before. I know the stress of it all and the credit report hassles and bank flags attributed to at least one divorce in my circle of friends. It is sort of like being on the "no fly" list-- nothing you do every really removes you permanently in terms of all residue...

Would I like to be able to connect with friends I may have lost contact with decades ago. Yes, I suppose. Perhaps I will embrace Facebook or its successor when I feel there are some protections in place. Until then, caveat emptor (even if it is "free')

I haven't posted a picture, posted my daily update status, joined any games or gifts or whatever the hell people do there. I have it in case someone does pop up that I know that I might want to touch base with, but I haven't even done much of that, frankly...

I had a Myspace Page that I updated for a while, but after most of the profiles went private and I could no longer snoop in on people without actually haven't to request them as friends, it sort of lost its fun. And because it is impossible to snoop in on Facebook pages without having to request people as friends, Facebook is even less fun.

on other people's walls like I was back in HS? To detail every mundane fact of my day? To show off all the people who love me? Honestly, I think it appeals to the same folk who send those form letters every Christmas to everyone and don't realize they're all laughing at them behind their backs.

127. I've never even visited the website. No interest in it whatsoever.
For me it's not about privacy. It's about not having anything to say and not giving a shit what others are saying there.

138. No facebook, no twitter
I do guard my privacy.

I think that individuals who expose themselves on the Internet have no one to blame but themselves, when all of a sudden things that they say, photos that they post come later to bite them.

I also think it is a bit of hypocrisy to scream about the government listening on conversations.
