|
Edited on Wed Aug-12-09 12:51 AM by Chulanowa
Rice was subservient to a white man and her job was basically to run errands for him. Her area of expertise centered around a nation that no longer exists, and so her intellectual achievements were non-threatening.
Alan Keyes, like Thomas Sowell, regularly repeats the claims made by white supremacists. They are self-hating back men who enjoy nothing more than stepping on the necks of their fellow African-Americans so long as it wins a nod and smile from a white guy somewhere.
Barack Obama is the president. While our tripartite system means that he's not exactly the most powerful man in the nation, he's close enough to ruffle feathers. He doesn't bow and scrape to a "massa," he's obviously of above-average intelligence, and he doesn't seem to favor whites over his own - or anyone else, for that matter.
THAT'S why Barack Obama is getting this, and the other three don't.

People of color in positions of power that support & reinforce the current power structure do to trigger the latent fear and panic that an independent person, a 'community organizer', like President Obama does. Some racists don't think they are racist because they like their black co-worker or neighbor but if they ever act like they don't know their place or their kid wants to date the neighbor's kid watch the fit hit the shan. It is like with the misogynists who think all women should be housewives unless it someone like Phyllis Schlafly who traveled around, wrote, gave speeches about how women should stay home and be housewives

People complain that he goes back and forth, that sometimes you love him and sometimes you hate him. I think he represents the easily swayed, the classic swing voter. So if he's calling it, chances are a lot of average, good-intentioned-but-not-entirely-tuned-in people are too.

He can't think on his feet and always gets his ass handed to him. meetings the White house has, and sat on all the panels. They didn't send there best negotiators so Obama could limit thiewr business. They sent thier best so that they could get a big share on that trillion dollars Obama is talking about spending. They are all for this Obama/Dem plan. Absolutely.
It's the Republicans who are against it. Not big business. They will make lots off it.
But the Repos in congress have determined that if the Dems win they lose.

You may notice I also refer to "Pubs" and "Cons" with a similar tone for the same reason.

Had you phrased your dissent with less hostility, I might have backed you up. I think the race aspect is often overstated myself, because I remember a similar reaction to a white southern male president in the not too distant past. I've taken a lot of heat here for saying that, but I argue my point with reason and logic. There's no need to go acting like a dick.

|
I have no problem with anyone opposing Obama's programs when they base it on facts and a rational discussion. It's the irrational ones who compare him to Hitler or Dr. Kevorkian who seem to have an ulterior motive for opposing him beyond their words.
How many high profile politicians does the GOP run for office who happen to be African American? Isn't it a fact that the GOP is the strongest in the places that used to have slaves or practice Jim Crow and were the biggest opponents to the civil rights movement?
Obama is not all that liberal but everyone knows he's black. Of course the right wing nuts are going oppose any liberal's plan to reform healthcare. But if that liberal also happens to be black, it sure doesn't win him any favorable points among a lot of conservatives.
|
| 90. Certainly, there is racist opposition to Obama |
|
But I think it's dangerous to write off any criticism of the man as racist. Additionally agree that attempting to equate Obama, and any other US President for that matter, to Hitler is ignorant and childish. I think I took the OP to be a bit more general in scope than it was intended, and the resulting I generated shit-storm was not my intent.
The only thing I disagree with is the idea that Obama is "not all that Liberal."

When this group refuse to disbelieve the notion that Obama was born in Kenya, despite plentiful evidence to the contrary, it's about not believing a black man could possibly be a natural-born citizen. And incidently, the only people to accuse others of "playing the race card" are racists.

...Laissez faire capitalism and socialism are at opposite ends of the spectrum. However, when the former arises in discussion, it is handled far more gingerly and given a modicum of respect. When its counterpart on the left is referenced, it is automatically demonized.
Do you hear anyone using the label of objectivist as a pejorative in this nation? How about socialist? How are the works of Ayn Rand treated as compared to those of Karl Marx?
What I find disheartening is that in this nation, we have only two political choices: the party of the status quo (Dems) and the party of regression (GOP). There is no widespread force for progressive politics and it's not even entertained as a legitimate option in a lot of quarters.

Denial not just a river in Egypt anymore, ey?
Tell it to someone who hasn't spent their entire life around right wingers and red necks. I've never met one that wasn't a racist and proud of it. Not one.
There is no way anyone can say that 99% of the vein popping red face buffoons going to these town halls are not freaked out because Obama is black, has an Arab name and is in "their" White House. They believe any and every lie spouted about him because they are ready to. Not because he is a Liberal, but because he is black and has a funny name.
They gave themselves away during the interviews conducted while they were in lines waiting to get into Palin campaigns. They gave themselves away by yelling racist epithets inside the rallies. They give themselves away because they follow the racist f*cks Beck, Limbaugh, Dobbs and Hannity. They respond to these garbage spouting racists because they are racist. They give themselves away by their signs and the crap they spout in and outside of the town halls. And their utter disrespect for our president after cramming respect for Bush down everyone's throat for the past 8 years.
You know when these fools should have been upset? When our Supreme Court facilitated the coup that put Bush in the White House. When Bush was using the constitution for toilet paper. When Bush approved listening in on our phone calls and snooping through our email. When Bush was passing out hundreds of billions of our dollars to his friends through no bid contracts. When Bush lied us into a war and tortured people against our laws. If that didn't upset these supposed champions of freedom and liberty (what a joke) then their feigned concern now is a little hard to stomach.
No sweetie. This is about racism, pure and simple. And the insurance industry is counting on it. Fools. Live with it.

You need to study the map showing counties in the US where Obama received a bigger percent of the vote than Kerry and the counties in the US where McCain received a bigger percent of the vote than Bush in 04. The McCain pick-up was 95% along the Mason-Dixon line from West Virginia to Tuscon, AZ. Obama would have had an even bigger win were it not for Red-Neck country and that means the primary issue was race. There is simply no way around the role race has played and continues to play in American politics -- and the Republicans won't let go.

It did nothing to diminish Obama's Hope and Change message that catapulted him into office. Now all of a sudden this is about race?

Remember, McCain did get 45% of the votes (give or take). Who do you think voted for him? This isn't the majority of America but they exist.
|
|
Good to see someone in the MSM besides Rachael and Keith calling this for what it is. A bunch of people who will never accept a black man as President.
That's why all the facts, contradictions in their positions, etc, in the world won't convince them. Because their protests have nothing to do with their stated intent. They are just run of the mill, pos, racists. That or completely ignorant. Both most likely.

| 111. I gotta give him props for that. |

Awfully brave thing to say right now.
|
| 113. Thank you Captain Obvious |
| 122. I disagree, it is about having a President that is smart |
|
and won the votes they thought they owned.
And, they thought they could steal the election again.
Now it is sinking in and they are acting like Clowns.
Until now they thought they owned America and now they can feel it slipping away and this is their Last Stand.
This President could be any color and they would still act this crazy. It was only a matter of time. And... there are no leaders other than Rush and Rove.
Before they had leaders that had some form of peace and quiet about them -- not now. Even GW had mellowed out from his jack Daniels in the last go round.
Can't imagine Gerald Ford or Richard Nixon validating this behavior.

| 124. Do any of you really think the response would have been different if Hillary had been elected |
|
and proposed this new health care reform?
This is the same attack the CLintons endured, but more organized at the lower level.

| 144. Yes. It would have been about sexism. |
|
It wasn't Bill they attacked last time around. It was Hillary. Why? Because they could use sexism to motivate the sexists on the right to go out and make asses of themselves. If you missed that you weren't paying attention.

Just as they recruited haters by sexists with Hillary the have recruited and exploited the hatred of racists this time around. It is very unlikely that the insurance industry is driven by racism but they are using it to achieve their ends.

...You could see it at the Tea Parties in April. The fact that it has increased as Obama has shown his adherence to the status quo tells you all you need to know about its origins.

| 167. Bah! Think they'd be quiet if HRC was prez? |
|
Or Edwards, or Kucinich? Nope. Rude and polarized, that seems to be the political scene today. If only Dems would get a little bit "rude and polarized" and quit trying to appease the Republicans, maybe we'd get something meaningful done. "Race" is just a little icing on their cake.
|
| 170. This is not hard to figure out. It's all about a black president. Any excuse to lash out. |

The MSM could flatten them and the GOP bastids behind this, but they won't.

--and receive their paychecks--from the same plutocracy. The plutocracy senses a great danger to itself. It will use any and every tool and trick to maintain its status quo and inhibit free speech and thoughtful interaction of ideas. First in its arsenal is FEAR. Meme-control "PR firms" skilled in manipulating crowdthought and the herd mentality are using the "fear markers" planted in our American society.
The first fear marker is race. There has been a concerted effort to keep certain racial fires burning and to provide succor to those that feed them. No one should be surprised at the squalid backlash against the first lawfully and legally elected person of color to ever sit in the White House. This is exactly the "contingency" that has been planned for.
The second fear marker is poverty. The homeless at every major corner in every major city send a appallingly profound message to everyone. You could be here too.

| 172. That became clear to me watching the Daily Show |
|
I had read it and I had felt it but it only dawned on my watching Stewart show the piece where the morons claimed they were afraid of Obama. was all I could think!
|
| 173. He is correct but this is also a RW criticism of Obama...his race makes him too "devisive". |
|
So I would be careful what you rate up at DU.
|
| 174. I don't believe it's a race thing. |
|
Don't get me wrong, a lot of these Republican wackos ARE racist.
But they would be pulling this shit even if it was a white Democrat as our president.
This is what Fox News has been cultivating for years. And now we finally see it, because Democrats are back in power.
They are going to be fucking insane, regardless of the color of our president's skin. It's because he's a Democrat.

Those of us who followed the election in 08 kinda knew that the racists in America would be blasted out of their hide-holes the moment Obama or any other minority in the race would win (Obama wasn't the only black or minority in the race- the other parties fielded minority candidates, except the GOP and the racist parties. That should tell conservatives something).
Gee Tweety- maybe you should get out of the Beltway more...

What short memories we have! No one remembers Hillary getting raked over the coals in '93, the 'revolution' in 1994, and all that mess with Whitewater and Monica to follow?
I will admit that these people don't want to subsidize 'lazy bums' (according to what they think of poor people, even though they are in the same boat, even if they have jobs now!)

Great tee-shirts, buttons and such at Laugh City! President Evil Online has risen from the grave!

| 183. I think it is part of it |
|
First it is because Dems are in control and they just spent 8 years calling us commie, traitor, terrorist, nazi appeasers..who should be obliterated.......feeding the nuts of party hate and fear like candy ...first it is because Dems are in control ...the fact that it is a black Dem is just the icing on the cake that is making the nut jobs just that much more crazy...
|
| 184. I realize that's convenient b/c then we can call them racists and just end the debate right there... |
|
But perhaps we can delve a little deeper into what is causing this issue? Taking the shortcut or easy way out will just allow the problem to come up again in the future.

If you don't know that racism is alive and thriving in this country, you need to pull your head out of the sand.
|
|
....except that these same people were fighting Clinton and Carter tooth and nail on every topic. There were no 'TownHall' meetings to express displeasure and ignorance in those days.
Is race an issue for some of these people? Of course. However, to start portraying every protester as simply being a racist is simply as ignorant as they are.
We cannot start labeling those against the policies of the Obama administration as racist in primary motivation. It lessens the argument by trying to stifle it.
|
| 194. That's because it IS about race, and the redneck kooks are coming out |
|
of the woodwork like cockroaches, peeing themselves, spewing hate, couched in terms like "socialist." But they aren't fooling anyone really. Matthews called it right. It's quite obvious, and the shitpot stirrers know it and they know just what buttons to push, when dealing with their knuckle-dragging base of support.
|

We have a winner! Tell 'em what he's won Johnny.
|
| 202. There is a core group of hardcore racist white supremacists |
|
and the rest of them are racist but would not act out unless they feel safe in numbers. The GOP is biting the dust, the country is in dire straights, and many people are angry and truly afraid. They are being encouraged to channel this anger in very destructive ways. It is the last card to be played by the far right, Divide and Conquer, and it is working well with these people.
Extremist hate media personalities are being given airtime, which is actually dangerous for the country, and for the President. They whip these angry and frustrated (and mostly uneducated) people into a frenzy, which is actually not hard to do.
Hate radio is encouraging hate violence, which is against the law. I do not think this is covered under freedom of speech. Aren't death threats against the law?
As far as freedom to carry a gun, I wonder who would have carried a gun that freely right after the patriot act was enacted? Who would have felt that ballsy to openly carry a gun when we were looking for domestic terrorists that were foreign? Would a Hispanic American or African American, or gods forbid, a Middle Eastern American openly carry a gun, they would never be seen again in the light of day, and we all know it.
I tell everyone I come across on the right that anyone turning American against American is suspect of being part of the problem. I tell them that the President doesn't have that much power anyway these days, that it is another power that is running things these days, and unless and until the citizenry gets a clue we will be continue to be robbed by them. Some of them actually listen.
|
| 205. Carlos Watson has been saying this in the mornings, too, on MSNBC. |
