Lately this phrase has been widely embraced and I love it, but this morning I asked myself why is "batshit crazy?"

3. Offensive to bats!
Won't someone PLEASE think of the bats!

Really though... it's likely an off-shoot of "bats in the belfry".

If I had to guess.

11. I like your guess.
'bats in the belfry' always meant you're a little off upstairs, so after time the guano builds up making you batshit crazy.

Now 'crazier than a shithouse rat' is a whole 'nother matter. :-)

4. If I recall correctly, batshit is actually very toxic
and being in a batshit-filled environment can cause mental problems. Now to google to see if I am...er...full of shit. :)

10. I've been looking for some reference, too, and it can be dangerous from a health standpoint.
So far the only thing I've been able to find about diseases from bat shit is histoplasmosis, which is a lung disorder (fungus). Workers who are cleaning up bat guano are supposed to take precautions. Symptoms affect the lungs and it is treatable.

19. Know what's even worse than batshit?
Turkey shit.

Last year Mr Pip had a serious lung issue, requiring him to have all kinds of tests, and a bronchoscopy.

Turned out he has Sarcoidosis, brought on in part by breathing in the dried particles of wild turkey droppings (we always get tons of them in our yard each winter).

Sarcoidosis is treatable to an extent, but not curable... :(

Now when we see the turkeys we have to chase them away

sort of sad...we used to have loads of fun watching them

7. I just looked up that term in the Urban Dictionary.
Edited on Tue Aug-11-09 08:26 AM by RandomThoughts
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=batshit+...

The first definition is not really fair, not sure why it is in there. Although a synonym for Tom Cruise is also Maverick. Note that by being a synonym, it is not Tom Cruise himself, although I disagree with many things Tom Cruise believes, and agree with some, I think he is an ok person, I sorta like him.
1) A synonym for Tom Cruise.

The second definition seems to match what I think of about the term.
2)adj. speech or behavior that is over the top, unhinged, self-destructive, or a threat to others.

The third definition I think is wrong, it is how I have thought of myself for many years, but I am not crazy, nor would I kill, but metaphorically taking over planes...
3)someone who has absolutely nothing to lose. batshit crazy people are different from regular crazy people because of their attitude and activities. a regular crazy person would shoot at a plane with a pistol. a batshit crazy person will jump off of one plane with a knife in their hands, onto another, break the glass and kill the pilot ... and land safely. in order to be truly batshit crazy the person must do the most outrageous things every and still return safely.

Ha! it says land safely, Ha! never expected that LOL But the first part of the third definition is right on with me! Without the killing of coarse, that is always bad. I hope to reach outrageous some day, but done with kindness :)

But anyway, I thought the Bat part was a vampire reference. Or like a Batman reference.

8. I can think of a possible origin, but its just a very very wild guess
First off batshit is valuable stuff. I was mined for use in making gunpowder because of its nitrogen content and for the same reason it is an excellent fertilizer for grasses like corn. Many a fortune was made in batshit and it might be said that a person enguaged in the business was batshit crazy - just as a teenage boy infatuated with the automobile might be said to be carcrazy.

I know, its a mighty long shot.

Sounds like a lot of craziness over bat guano to me, and not just by individuals.

The United States farmers came to realize the agricultural value of guano at the same time and they were not to be left out. Anxiety over supply led President Fillmore to address the guano issue in his first State of the Union Address. In that 1850 address, the President stated that guano has become so desirable an article to the agricultural interest of the United States that it is the duty of the Government to employ all the means properly in its power for the purpose of causing that article to be imported into the country at a reasonable price. Nothing will be omitted on my part toward accomplishing this desirable end.

The frenzy for control of the guano trade was intense. It led to the Guano War of 1865-1866, pitting Spain against Peru and Chile. Not to be left out, the U.S. Navy also fought a battle with Peru for the guano. Fear of guano shortages even led the United States into its first bout of global colonialism. In 1856, Congress passed the Guano Islands Act (still on the books at 48 U.S.C. 1411-1419). This Federal law allows U.S. citizens to claim an unclaimed and uninhabited island for the United States if the island contains guano (please obtain your own attorneys opinion before attempting this yourself). Over 50 islands were claimed in the Pacific and Caribbean under authority of this Act, and many are still under U.S. control. One of the most famous is Midway.

Another article here. People over the centuries have indeed, been crazy for bat shit!

Guano Islands Act
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Guano Islands Act (48 U.S.C. ch.8 1411-1419) is federal legislation passed by the U.S. Congress, on August 18, 1856. It enables citizens of the U.S. to take possession of islands containing guano deposits. The islands can be located anywhere, so long as they are not occupied and not within the jurisdiction of other governments. It also empowers the President of the United States to use the military to protect such interests, and establishes the criminal jurisdiction of the United States.

Whenever any citizen of the United States discovers a deposit of guano on any island, rock, or key, not within the lawful jurisdiction of any other Government, and not occupied by the citizens of any other Government, and takes peaceable possession thereof, and occupies the same, such island, rock, or key may, at the discretion of the President, be considered as appertaining to the United States.

Could have potential for a new boobtube reality series.

14. Actually, that was going to be my next question.
Another popular phrase is "as crazy as a shithouse rat." What, exactly, is crazy about a shithouse rat--or a street rat, for that matter?

I would think a shithouse rat would be pretty smart. I mean, it may be filthy in there but don't rats thrive on filth? And there'd be lots of bare skin to bite if it was into that sort of thing. Probably be a better life out back of a kitchen, but still.

16. Suddenly anyone who disagrees w/you is by default "crazy." Unfortunate trend...
... of the mainstream discourse. Stupid no longer suffices. Now everyone else has to be a "delusional wingnut," too.

That aside, "apeshit" is an older variant of the theme, as in, "so-and-so is gonna go apeshit when she hears about this!" lol

17. It is not a matter of disagreement, it is a matter of distortion, lies, and manipulation.
It is not disagreement when a person who is batshit crazy stands at a mike in a public forum - in front of their Representative - and screams that they have no voice and no politician listens to them. Batshit crazy.

It is not disagreement when a person recites the "Death Panel" mime. Its batshit crazy.

Call a spade a spade. Batshit crazy.

18. Not suggesting there aren't MANY, if not a majority of our species that's given to illusion
... of all varieties. And then there are those who are dangerously out of touch with any moral ground. That's not what I was addressing. I just find it a tad silly that so many feel the need to characterize others as "crazy" in an era when unreality and instability/mass communication breakdown generally prevails for this country.

20. Well see, apeshit makes more sense...
since apes and chimps, etc. apparently enjoy throwing their own poo around at intruders

anybody caught in a poo-fest would probably go insane trying to get it off of them...
