Rep. Inglis (R-SC): The public option will put private insurance out of business
To his credit, he told the Deathers at his town hall to turn off the television when Glenn Beck comes on, because he's "trading on fear." He was shouted down. But on Hardball tonight he said this, which sums up the Republican opposition to health care reform, IMO.

From Hardball:

MSNBC Video

"I sent out a press release last week saying there are sixteen reasons to oppose Obamacare, the top one being that the public option will put private insurance out of business, I fear, and the result will be that we end up with a single payer system. That's a problem with the Obama package."

Um, what's wrong with that?

You know, if the bill doesn't pass, WE'RE going to put private insurance out of business in a way they will VERY MUCH regret.

They better hope a good strong bill passes.

6. If the public option can do it better, then the private insurance has no right to exists
Let the free market settle everything out. If the Republicans are convinced that private insurance is significantly better than a public option then they should have nothing to worry about. People would continue to buy their private insurance like before.

They're afraid ANY kind of healthcare reform will open the gate to...real healthcare reform.

Thanks, Stephanie. There's nothing wrong with that.

10. Estimates are that the current proposals will have 10 million people in the public plan...
quite a bit different from the original "public plan" estimate.

"If there were ever two important articles to educate Democratic members of Congress on the catastrophic mistake they are about to commit for a third time since 1970 on health care reform, these are those two articles..."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

"The people who brought us the “public option” began their campaign promising one thing but now promote something entirely different. To make matters worse, they have not told the public they have backpedalled. The campaign for the “public option” resembles the classic bait-and-switch scam: tell your customers you’ve got one thing for sale when in fact you’re selling something very different.

When the “public option” campaign began, its leaders promoted a huge “Medicare-like” program that would enroll about 130 million people. Such a program would dwarf even Medicare, which, with its 45 million enrollees, is the nation’s largest health insurer, public or private. But today “public option” advocates sing the praises of tiny “public options” contained in congressional legislation sponsored by leading Democrats that bear no resemblance to the original model.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the “public options” described in the Democrats’ legislation might enroll 10 million people and will have virtually no effect on health care costs, which means the “public options” cannot, by themselves, have any effect on the number of uninsured. But the leaders of the “public option” movement haven’t told the public they have abandoned their original vision. It’s high time they did."

They're afraid of losing their big fat bonus checks they earn by denying people coverage. You pay them, but they don't want to hold up their end of the deal.

15. So what?
Don't know why the Republicans should care, other than the obvious loss of graft to their own pockets. I'm sure they'll say it's about putting people out of work, but their mantra has long been one of pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps. Are they now conveniently concerned about the employees who'll lose jobs??

Because if there's a public option in there, it will so successful people will switch away from private insurance and the companies will go out of business, and soon we'll have single payer.
