Were NC terror suspect's stories an exaggeration?
By MIKE BAKER and ADAM GOLDMAN, Associated Press Writers Sun Aug 9, 5:12 pm ET

RALEIGH, N.C. – Daniel Patrick Boyd used tales of fighting the Soviets alongside the mujahedeen to recruit followers into a North Carolina terrorism ring, authorities believe, and U.S. officials who were in Pakistan at the time doubt his stories.

The former officials questioned whether Boyd, 39, had any affiliation with the Islamic guerrillas, noting the Soviets had all but left Afghanistan by the time the young, blond Muslim convert arrived from America two decades ago.

Boyd's stories were part of an indictment accusing him and seven followers of planning violent jihad overseas. The indictment claims some of the men were training in military-style tactics and that all were plotting to kill, kidnap and maim as part of holy war.

Regardless of whether Boyd was ever actually involved with the mujahedeen, authorities said he was preparing for violent jihad and found more than two dozen weapons, a stockpile of ammunition and gas masks at his house.

Suddenly he's looking less like Opie Taylor & more like AN EVIL HIPPIE.

1. As I said from the beginning, the time lines just don't mesh.
He supposedly talked about fighting the soviets, but arrived there eight months after the soviets pulled out. There was still fighting going on, but it did NOT include any soviets.

What he sounds like to me is an FBI or CIA plant - SOMEBODY got him out of the Pakistani jail, whereupon he straight away moved back to the states.

Who'd he make a deal with?

3. He could easily be making that up just to have something to brag about
However, I think the guy is scary as hell. All the guns and ammo...I read that he has lied when questioned after travelling to the middle east. If he's innocent why would he lie? What I can't figure out is why he wants to go to another country to do the dirty work he is accused of planning.

4. Frankly, I'm not too worked up about the guns and ammo thing -
this is North Carolina, after all, and the day someone stockpiles a dozen weapons and hundreds of rounds in these parts is usually called 'tuesday'.

The 'overseas plots' is just more of the bullshit - why plot for actions in Israel, where they have NO access to weapons, instead here where they, obviously, have plenty of weapons?

It just doesn't mesh.

5. I agree...and I'm in Durham so I get the Tuesday thing and I agree it looks
pretty weird and some parts just don't add up. I'm not sure they aren't guilty of some craziness though. The lying doesn't look good. I think it was the Independent I read that discussed the conspiracy charges.
I don't see how a fair trial could ever happen either.
