Last Year was my Last Straight Dem Vote
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 06:58 PM by placton
Since my first vote - cast at age 21 (yeah I am THAT old - for McGovern) I have followed a simple maxim: "Be emphatic, vote straight Democratic!" Never again. And, it looks like, never again for Obama.

Look at his campaign promises:

"First, we'll take on the drug and insurance companies and hold them accountable for the prices they charge and the harm they cause... And then we'll tell the pharmaceutical companies, 'Thanks but no thanks for overpriced drugs'. Drugs that cost twice as much here as they do in Europe and Canada and Mexico. We'll let Medicare negotiate for lower prices. We'll stop drug companies from blocking generic drugs that are just as effective and far less expensive. We'll allow the safe reimportation of low-cost drugs from countries like Canada."

AND.....

"But here's the thing. We're going to do all these negotiations on C-SPAN.

The American people will be able to watch these negotiations so if they start seeing a member of Congress who is carrying the water for the drug companies instead of for their constituents and says, 'Oh, you no. we can't negotiate for the cheapest available price on drugs because the drug companies need these profits to invest in research and development', I'll say, 'OK, let me bring my health care expert in here'. And on TV, we'll ask my health care expert, 'What do you think about what the drug companies are saying?'

And what that drug expert will undoubtedly say is 'Well, drug companies do need some profits to invest in research and development but a lot of what they're calling research and development is actually marketing costs for some of these TV ads you see' ... where everybody is, you have all these people dancing in fields, looking all happy. You don't know what the drug is for. Right? Except for that one drug, you know what that's for. You know what that one is for.

Anyway, you get my point. Open this. Transparency. You will hold me accountable, you will hold Congress accountable. That's how we'll get welfare... uh health care reform passed."

Watch this liar say this and more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/09/flashback-obama-promises_n_254833.html

I am gonna judge Obama by the same standard as Bush now - I will assume he is lying. Because he has - time and again breaking explicit promises that persuaded me to vote for him.

Now ole "Dick" Durin is "open" to shitcanning the public option just like the prez - his buddy from IL.

"One of Barack Obama's chief allies in the United States Senate hinted on Sunday that a public insurance option could go by the wayside as Congress hammers out its health care legislation.

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union," Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), one of the chamber's foremost progressives, said that while he supported a government-run option for insurance, he was "open" to alternatives.

"Just understand that, after we pass this bill -- and I hope we do -- in the Senate, it will go to conference committee," said Durbin. "We'll have a chance to work out all of our differences."

"So we'll see how this ends, but I don't want the process to be filibustered to failure, which unfortunately, many senators are trying to do," Durbin added. "I want to make sure that we do something positive for the American people."

The comments are similar to the line coming from the White House in recent days, with officials indicating that they would be open to a co-op based insurance model, provided that it had enough leverage to lower costs for consumers. (In this plan, non-profit cooperatives would get a charter from the government to take premiums from members and cover claims, expanding the risk pool for individuals buying insurance). Indeed, for Durbin to make the remarks he did on CNN is a strong indication that the party -- from Obama on down -- sees the public option as a likely victim in an effort to get 60 votes for health care's passage in the Senate."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/09/another-blow-to-public-op_n_254961.html

I will still vote of course - and for some Dems like my senator, Carl Levin. But, in many races, I won't vote at all. And if the Dems lose, well, they chose to lie to me and not represent me for decades. Because they're nothing (for the most part) but a bunch of corporatist, lying sacks of...

I urge others to do other same. And ... spare me the bullshit about how it is only 6 months, and he needs time and all that. Nossir - the auto vote is gone forever. Sigh.

But he is too cowardly to come out and say it. Most of the people who come out with these kind of accusations were either not born or were still crapping their diapers when people like you and I were fighting for the cause. They just dont know how easy life is on them. But hey..if you dont agree with them you must must be a troll.

Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 07:13 PM by John Q. Citizen
Because I'm a Democrat, And that is what we do.

Don't ask me why we do it. I think it's some kind of alphabet fixation.

When Repos do the same thing, (vote for people that lie to them because they have an R behind their name) we say they are stupid.

Does that make sense? Yes! We are Democrats, so of course it makes sense.

The way to get progressive reform is by taking over the Democratic Party in the Democratic Party primaries; there is no other road, and that does not entail voting for various 3rd parties or what have you. Understand that before making melodramatic dumbass statements.

Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 08:30 PM by salguine
too many of his policies are hopelessly corporatist, and in addition to providing no help whatsoever to the American people when they desperately need it most, it's going to hasten America's slide into complete irrelevance and eventual third-world status rather than arresting, and reversing, it.

Glad you're laughing.

uhhhhh...most of the ideas you mention...were LIBERAL ideas, because Bush was LIBERAL in his spending...oh, and he spent that money ONLY with the approval and support of a LIBERAL congress, who were in control of Congress since 2006! The president can not spend a penny, or make legislative decisions.

You realize how your own government operates I assume, or do you. Read up man, learn how it works.

3 Branches:

1) Excutive
2) Legislative
3) Judicial

The 2) option, passes legislation and controlls SPENDING..not the President.

28. I hope you will give yourself permission to reconsider.
Let me begin by saying that I share much of your dissatisfaction. I favor single payer, card check and getting the hell out of Iraq and Afghanistan. I'd also LOVE to see the Bushies perp-walked out of a Federal Court after being convicted of crimes too numberous to list here. BUT---

---let's be certain we consider that OUR goals are much more likely to be achieved and OUR dreams are much more likely to SURVIVE in an Obama administration than in---whose? Palin/Bachman? Huckabee/Palin? Romney/Pawlenty?

Is this enough? Hell, no! It's just all---for now---that there is.

I have been royally pissed---about FISA, about torture, about "impeachment is off the table"(DAMN that one pissed me!)---and I have said what you have just posted. Maybe it's because I'm 60, but I cooled off, eventually. And, my cold-blooded assessment of what I can do, long-term, to further my liberal vision for a better America, remains what it has been my entire life: Support Democratic candidates and work to insure that our best people make it through the primaries.

Take a walk. Marvel at the night sky. Drink some good wine. Let it rest for 48 hours. Grit your teeth and come on back.

with debating skills like that you should run for the senate> I hold that arguments and evidence trump assholes every time. I am amazed that, for all the vitriol tossed at my post, there has not been ONE counter argument or fact cited to disprove me. Thanks god the Democratic Party is a big enough tent to inlude the foolish, the stupid, and the argumentatively challenged.

93. Placton is not a fair weather Dem giving up after 6 months;
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 08:37 PM by dflprincess
he's giving up after 37 years and I understand exactly where he's coming from.

I've been active since McGovern ran as well. For most of that time I've held one party office or another and I've reached the end.

Democrats like Placton and I have stuck it out through good times and bad and, as long as we've been around, we were still gullible enough to believe that if the Democrats took back Congress things would change - then we were dumb enough to fall for it not being enough to control Congress, but we needed the White House as well. Well, the Democrats control both Houses of Congress and the Presidency and we're still being sold out to big business.

I'll donate to individual candidates, but I won't give either the state or national party a dime (besides, I can't donate enough to influcence any votes anyway) and I won't vote for someone just because they have "DFL" after their name anymore. If the DFLer who is running is just another sell out, I'll skip the race or vote for an acceptable third party candidate.

79. I keep saying if they wimp out on health insurance reform
they can expect a repeat of 1994 and for the same reason. It does no good to vote them into office if they're going to be weak, spineless, and so afraid some right wing know nothing is going to call them socialists that they're utterly paralyzed.

1994 happened because Democrats were disgusted and stayed home while there was a huge "throw the bums out" movement on the right.

The 12 years the GOP was in control did a lot of damage and I certainly don't want to repeat it.

If, however, the majority party fails us, they can expect to be the minority party in a year and a half.
