UPDATED 5X: The Glenn Beck/Fox Boycott is Working!!

Ever since the boycott of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity's shows, I've been DVRing Beck's show regularly, fast forwarding through the show but jotting down a list of the advertisers on the shows, and calling, writing, and emailing the companies expressing my displeasure at the views they are endorsing through their advertising dollars.

wikoogle's diary :: :: My letter and email usually outlines information about the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity boycott, including the petition that has thousands of signatures online, as well as the specific language used by Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity that was so offensive and inflammatory...

"The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States. Because its going to take a grassroots, bottom-up pressure, because these politicians prize their office, prize the praise of the media and the Europeans. Only its an absurd situation. Again, only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently, and with as much violence as necessary."

"The President has exposed himself as a guy ... over and over and over again ... who has a deep-seated hatred for white people ... or the white culture... This man is a racist."

As well Sean Hannity's comparison of Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler.

I then outline why as a person of color, I am deeply offended to hear such hateful, loaded and deragatory language used to describe our elected president.

I sometimes explain how the language that Hannity is using, the language used by his guests frequently, and by the people that are hired to administrate his popular online forums, saying that Obama is a fascist, with terrorist associates, comparing him to Hitler or Marx, and comparing his policies to fascism, that's precisely the kind of hatefilled fearmongering language that could convince an already unbalanced person to think that he is justified in whatever he does to stop Obama from "setting up a fascist state" as Hannity and the people he hires repeatedly insist that he is. That kind of language needs to stop immediately. It is both extremely offensive and dangerous, and while he has the freedom to say it, that their corporation would endorse it by advertising on his program is appaling.

I explain that I consider their advertising dollars being spent on the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity programs as an implicit tacit approval of the inflammatory and deragotory language and comments that the hosts of these programs, and the guests they frequently have on are using to describe our president, and urge the corporations to stop advertizing on these programs or lose the patronage of the tens of thousands of people partaking in this boycott.

It is my sincere hope that other people on this site are doing the same thing.

Corporations do care if their ad dollars are being used in a manner that might actually lose them customers and customer loyalty. They do care if the corporations are seen as tacitly approving of inflammatory speech directed at our elected president.

I've noticed something interesting over the past week.

Pretty much all of the regular advertisers on the initial list of companies to be boycotted have stopped advertizing on these programs...

Here is a small partial list of regular advertisers on Glenn Beck's show a week ago that were targeted as a part of this boycott

General Motors
Campbell Soup
Chrysler
Proctor & Gamble
Pfizer
Kellogg
Walmart
Kraft Foods
Nestle

This is only the partial list. But I remember the full list from the original diary, and I remember writing a letter to each one of those companies. So I know their names, and I don't recall seeing a single ad from any of the companies that were targeted last week, showing up during today's (and yesterday's) program.

That list was found in the petition http://colorofchange.org /...

Below is a list of every advertiser from today's 5PM airing of the Glenn Beck show.

Super8 motels (super8.com)
Red Lobster
Ditech (ditech.com)
Sargento Cheese
United States Postal Service!!
AARP Insurance
United Healthcare Insurance Company
Ally Bank (allybank.com)
Conservatives for Patients Rights (cprrights.org)
Mens Warehouse
Wallstreet Journal
Accu Chek Aviva
Avodart
Brita Filter
Radio Shack
Mercedes-Benz
Pepboys
Nexium
Healthy Choice
Golden Corral
ADT Security
HSBC Life Insurance
Weitz&Luxemburg
Metastock
Superior Gold Group
60Plus.org
Apple
Forex.com
Rapid Wash
Broadbive Security

If you notice, not a single one of the original regular Beck advertisers that were contacted as a part of this boycott had even one ad air during today's show. I noted a similar pattern in earlier shows. Instead, other than a few exceptions like Mercedes, Apple, Red Lobster and a few others, many of the newer advertisments are from no name companies that show up during the very latenight hours on Fox ews. Many of these ads (for gold, rapid wash dog wash kit and such) are the advertisements that air during the 1am-5am slots of the Fox News network. These are companies that usually can't afford the higher prices for the 5pm slots.

This boycott is working DailyKos.

Fox News is getting so desperate for ads to air during Beck's show that they are now airing in primetime slots ads originally purchased for the much cheaper 1AM-5AM time slots. We just need to keep up the pressure on these companies that continue to endorse Fox News' hate speech, and extend the boycott to Hannity's show.

I know that we can continue pressure on this new crop of Beck's advertisers and achieve similar results with Sean Hannity by compiling a list of his advertisers and emailing them.

Clearly, some of this maybe coincidence, but it's more likely that most companies on this initial list recieved angry letters and emails from atleast a few hundred customers and privately stopped their ads from going on during the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity programs. And it's likely that they don't want to publicize having done so, fearing a backlash against them from conservatives.

But regardless, most of these ads have stopped.

Instead these slots were replaced by advertisers that probably didn't even know that their ads would be aired during the Glenn Beck show. Advertizers like Apple who in all likelihood bought ad money on Fox News on the cheap during latenight, but who due to the vaccume of advertizing on Beck's show, had their ads instead moved to the more expensive primetime slots of the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity shows.

For more proof of this, anyone who is DVRing Beck's show as a part of this boycott can jump to minute 56 of today's (Friday's) 5PM show and see an ad for the Apple iPhone.

Apple never used to have any ads on the Glenn Beck show. Their ads mostly showed up mid afternoon or very latenight on Fox News, and sometimes on the O'Reilly Factor, but never during either Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity. In all likelihood, Apple's ads purchased for very late night airings were moved free of charge to more lucrative spots, without Apple's knowledge.

Regardless of the reason, there is proof that the boycott is working. Though corporations don't want to publicize it for fear of a conservative backlash, the corporations on the original boycott list seem to have ALL pulled their ad dollars from Glenn Beck's show, our mail, email, and phone calls already had a huge impact on Fox News' bottom line. This is why I think the time is ripe to amp up the pressure on even more advertisers, and go after Sean Hannity's hate speech as well.

So please, keep up the pressure. Please continue to contact the companies advertizing on Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity.

As a start, here is the contact information (compiled by New Earth) for the most current crop of advertizers on the 5PM-6PM airing of Glenn Beck's show. Please contact them about their Fox News advertising...

2. Red Lobster is now advertising on Beck
Interesting because they are part of the same corporation as Olive Garden. Olive Garden dropped David Letterman after Palin thing.

9. my letter to red lobster
For several months, my honey has been bugging me to take her to a Red Lobster. I agreed, until I saw that you advertise on Fox News, and with Beck & Hannity, in particular. I am sorry to tell you, but for as long as you support Fox with your advertising dollars, you will not have us as customers. They are racist, fascist, lying scum, and if you continue to associate with them, we will have nothing to do with your company.

Please reconsider and stop supporting these buffoons. They are fomenting dangerous ideas. Their evil words will eventually lead to some innocent's death. Cut your advertising now, and you will gain to new loyal customers.

Please note, there are many more of us than Beck and Hannity supporters. Thank you.

22. You don't need to write Red Lobster or Olive Garden, you need to write Darden Restaurants
Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 12:00 AM by SleeplessInAlabama
DRI shareholders can contact the company they own at:
http://investor.dardenrestaurants.com/abt_comment.cfm

Anyone else can contact them at
P.O. Box 593330
Orlando, FL 32859-3330
407-245-4000

I apologize if Red Lobster has the same contact info as Darden (ok well apparently the phone number is), however it'll be much more effective to contact the parent corporation as opposed to any one restaurant chain, especially since they've simply switched from Olive Garden to Red Lobster on Beck.

23. My letter
We will no longer be eating at Red Lobster. We noticed you advertise on Fox News for the Glen Beck Show. He is inciting HATRED and RIOTS in our country and we will no longer support those who support his show.

Soon you will have no one in your Restaurants, but screaming Right Wing, hate filled people, and they don't leave tips.

Olive Garden Says It Did Not Cancel Ads on Letterman Show
By Bill Carter
"The Olive Garden restaurant chain may not have been happy with David Lettermans jokes about Gov. Sarah Palin and her family, but no order was issued to pull commercials from Mr. Lettermans show, a spokesman for the company said Thursday.

Rich Jeffers, the spokesman, said Olive Garden was attempting to counter what he called erroneous information out there, which he said came from the Web site Politico. The site posted a report by Andy Barr on Thursday saying that the restaurant was canceling all its scheduled ads on Mr. Lettermans show for the rest of the year.

Mr. Jeffers said in a telephone interview that no such cancellation decision had been made and that the companys schedule of commercials in the show had simply expired earlier this month.

The Politico report said it had obtained the information about the cancellation from a Letterman critic who received a letter from Olive Garden that apologized if Mr. Lettermans mistake had left a bad impression of Olive Garden. The letter, as quoted by Politico, did not say the company was pulling ads."

3. great work!
keep this post updated... it's up to us to make the change happen!

Maybe post a few sample email letters to give people ideas on exactly what to write to these advertisers. I worked for a Fortune 50 company, and their PR department was very sensitive to any amount of bad publicity, which includes people complaining about their marketing buys. Emailing companies and complaining WORKS! Phone calls are even better.

20. Is it true that the PR departments of major companies
count every customer who is submitting feedback as roughly 5000 people voicing the same opinion?
I once read that in a trade expose somewhere.

10. The problem is faux, not just GB
All they been doing is switching advertisers of boycotted shows over to other "news" shows or the other fox sports/movie/family channels.

what is gratifying is that they get less revenue then though. I THINK!

I do wonder if making a stink about a show always works. Sometimes "bad" publicity is "good" publicity. particularly if the target never will reach a broad audience anyway. But yet serves a fanatic "niche" of viewers and advertisers.

Case in point is the Olbermann/Oreilly "feud". both audence levels shot through the roof.

14. I don't think Rupert Murdoch is willing to move to an All-News/No Advertiser format.
As has been said repeatedly, hitting them in the pocket book is the ONLY thing they understand.

Additionally, I don't know how much money ol' Rupert's got to support his failing businesses, but I can't possibly be the only person who refuses to knowingly fund his fortune in any way. The second he bought the WSJ (and every other rag he's collected), the World News Weekly, Globe and Enquirer surpassed it in journalistic integrity.

Edited on Sun Aug-09-09 03:33 AM by Touchdown
I don't know how profitable its become since the viewer exodus started in 2006, but I'd say Murdoch is more than willing to sink dough into a political machine (That's all his "news" organizations are) if he sees the results at the ballot box.

He'll just let the 'Rescue Me' cable channel, the 'Lie To Me/Prison Break' network, and the 'Star Wars/Titanic/X-Men/Fight Club' studio he also owns subsidize them.

BTW: He hated Fight Club.

24. It was mentioned up thread
that posting some sample letters would be helpful. I agree. Not only do I get bogged down with what to say and how to say it (I worry about accuracy, legalities, and things like being too subtle or too insulting), I also don't have a lot of extra time for composing. (I know, I know. I should be doing my own homework. But just this once, samples would be greatly appreciated.)
