Ever since the boycott of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity's shows, I've been DVRing Beck's show regularly, fast forwarding through the show but jotting down a list of the advertisers on the shows, and calling, writing, and emailing the companies expressing my displeasure at the views they are endorsing through their advertising dollars.
wikoogle's diary :: :: My letter and email usually outlines information about the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity boycott, including the petition that has thousands of signatures online, as well as the specific language used by Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity that was so offensive and inflammatory...
"The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States. Because it’s going to take a grassroots, bottom-up pressure, because these politicians prize their office, prize the praise of the media and the Europeans. Only — it’s an absurd situation. Again, only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently, and with as much violence as necessary."
"The President has exposed himself as a guy ... over and over and over again ... who has a deep-seated hatred for white people ... or the white culture... This man is a racist."
As well Sean Hannity's comparison of Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler.
I then outline why as a person of color, I am deeply offended to hear such hateful, loaded and deragatory language used to describe our elected president.
I sometimes explain how the language that Hannity is using, the language used by his guests frequently, and by the people that are hired to administrate his popular online forums, saying that Obama is a fascist, with terrorist associates, comparing him to Hitler or Marx, and comparing his policies to fascism, that's precisely the kind of hatefilled fearmongering language that could convince an already unbalanced person to think that he is justified in whatever he does to stop Obama from "setting up a fascist state" as Hannity and the people he hires repeatedly insist that he is. That kind of language needs to stop immediately. It is both extremely offensive and dangerous, and while he has the freedom to say it, that their corporation would endorse it by advertising on his program is appaling.
I explain that I consider their advertising dollars being spent on the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity programs as an implicit tacit approval of the inflammatory and deragotory language and comments that the hosts of these programs, and the guests they frequently have on are using to describe our president, and urge the corporations to stop advertizing on these programs or lose the patronage of the tens of thousands of people partaking in this boycott.
It is my sincere hope that other people on this site are doing the same thing.
Corporations do care if their ad dollars are being used in a manner that might actually lose them customers and customer loyalty. They do care if the corporations are seen as tacitly approving of inflammatory speech directed at our elected president.
I've noticed something interesting over the past week.
Pretty much all of the regular advertisers on the initial list of companies to be boycotted have stopped advertizing on these programs...
Here is a small partial list of regular advertisers on Glenn Beck's show a week ago that were targeted as a part of this boycott
•General Motors
•Campbell Soup
•Chrysler
•Proctor & Gamble
•Pfizer
•Kellogg
•Walmart
•Kraft Foods
•Nestle
This is only the partial list. But I remember the full list from the original diary, and I remember writing a letter to each one of those companies. So I know their names, and I don't recall seeing a single ad from any of the companies that were targeted last week, showing up during today's (and yesterday's) program.
That list was found in the petition

If you notice, not a single one of the original regular Beck advertisers that were contacted as a part of this boycott had even one ad air during today's show. I noted a similar pattern in earlier shows. Instead, other than a few exceptions like Mercedes, Apple, Red Lobster and a few others, many of the newer advertisments are from no name companies that show up during the very latenight hours on Fox ews. Many of these ads (for gold, rapid wash dog wash kit and such) are the advertisements that air during the 1am-5am slots of the Fox News network. These are companies that usually can't afford the higher prices for the 5pm slots.
This boycott is working DailyKos.
Fox News is getting so desperate for ads to air during Beck's show that they are now airing in primetime slots ads originally purchased for the much cheaper 1AM-5AM time slots. We just need to keep up the pressure on these companies that continue to endorse Fox News' hate speech, and extend the boycott to Hannity's show.
I know that we can continue pressure on this new crop of Beck's advertisers and achieve similar results with Sean Hannity by compiling a list of his advertisers and emailing them.
Clearly, some of this maybe coincidence, but it's more likely that most companies on this initial list recieved angry letters and emails from atleast a few hundred customers and privately stopped their ads from going on during the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity programs. And it's likely that they don't want to publicize having done so, fearing a backlash against them from conservatives.
But regardless, most of these ads have stopped.
Instead these slots were replaced by advertisers that probably didn't even know that their ads would be aired during the Glenn Beck show. Advertizers like Apple who in all likelihood bought ad money on Fox News on the cheap during latenight, but who due to the vaccume of advertizing on Beck's show, had their ads instead moved to the more expensive primetime slots of the Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity shows.
For more proof of this, anyone who is DVRing Beck's show as a part of this boycott can jump to minute 56 of today's (Friday's) 5PM show and see an ad for the Apple iPhone.
Apple never used to have any ads on the Glenn Beck show. Their ads mostly showed up mid afternoon or very latenight on Fox News, and sometimes on the O'Reilly Factor, but never during either Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity. In all likelihood, Apple's ads purchased for very late night airings were moved free of charge to more lucrative spots, without Apple's knowledge.
Regardless of the reason, there is proof that the boycott is working. Though corporations don't want to publicize it for fear of a conservative backlash, the corporations on the original boycott list seem to have ALL pulled their ad dollars from Glenn Beck's show, our mail, email, and phone calls already had a huge impact on Fox News' bottom line. This is why I think the time is ripe to amp up the pressure on even more advertisers, and go after Sean Hannity's hate speech as well.
So please, keep up the pressure. Please continue to contact the companies advertizing on Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity.
As a start, here is the contact information (compiled by New Earth) for the most current crop of advertizers on the 5PM-6PM airing of Glenn Beck's show. Please contact them about their Fox News advertising...
