I'm really getting tired of assholes...

And not in the "partisan politics sucks" kind of way. More in the "apathetic" kind of way.

I don't even look at the loud-mouth dissenters and think of them as "conservatives" or "republicans". They don't deserve such a polite title. They are stupid assholes. Every time I read a newspaper or watch TV and I read or hear from one of these morons, a little bit of my fight wastes away.

It's not that I am crumbling in the face of resistance. It's that I look at the other side and see people who are incapable of being helped or turned around. We are fighting against a wall of stupid.

How can you possibly change their mind? I like to play the devils advocate in here a lot. I like to say that a lot of these people just don't know any better and that one day they will realize just how wrong they were. But reality bites. The vast majority of these fools will NEVER know any better.

There will always be tons of stupid people that get in the way of progress. And it makes me kind of depressed knowing just how hard it is to accomplish the least bit of good in this country.

We see things as being obviously beneficial. They cannot grasp that concept.

These people really do hate humanity. They say that people are not capable of being good and therefore we must give in to our greed. But they are simply projecting their own shortcomings. They are the ones that are incapable of being good people. They despise charity and good will. They just assume that everyone else is like them.

We are not like them. We must never be like them. And it scares me when I hear these miserable souls spreading their hate because I know that someone is going to join their ranks.

I honestly do not know how to combat this epidemic.

1. I feel the same way. How on earth do you fight against people who are just plain dumb?
I told my mother this evening that I feel a great despair because those of us who think and read and can reason don't even recognize them as human beings. Reminds me of the Salem witch trials...people operating on base emotion with no rational though. Scary.

2. It is very much like the red scare or salem witch trials...
An uprising of ignorant populist rage.

It makes me sick.

3. That's why I just shake my head when people ask how do they respond to such things...
It's an exercise in futility.

completely and totally useless.

Because, like you said, they're just never going to listen. I believe some of it goes way beyond stupidity right to true mental illness...and without some serious therapy (which they're convinced they don't really need) it's never going to change.

Might as well just talk to a brick wall.

And the people here at DU who think they're actually going to change the opinion of people like that...I honestly don't know what their deal is. Are they just incurable masochists? Do they enjoy hearing themselves talk? Do they enjoy the thrill of arguing with stupid/crazy people?

Beats me.

It's also no skin off my ass if they want to do it...personally I think it's a huge waste of time and energy, but hey, whatever blows their skirts up...

8. I wonder if they're all on Xanax or other hard drugs.

Seriously, has anyone ever studied the societal effects of a large population high on powerful pharmaceuticals?

4. You're right -
we can't change their minds. We can't. Never. We lack that power, and they are not able to hear whatever we might try to say to them. We might as well be speaking gibberish, that's how incapable they are of understanding what we're saying.

But, those same voices - not quite as vociferous or public or ugly, I admit - were raised forty-four years ago when LBJ signed the law that brought Medicare into being. They called it Socialism and Communism and every -ism they could think of, even if they didn't know what those words meant. They hated the idea of Medicaid and Head Start. They said it was the beginning of the end of our great capitalist society.

Well, try taking their Medicare away today.

The only way we can make them hear us is to work to get the law passed. That's what we have to do, and we do that by pushing on with our own, positive efforts. If it means going to a Town Hall Meeting in order to negate the shouts of these misguided tools, then we go. We make sure our elected representatives know how we want them to vote, and talk it up, pass out information pamphlets, send suggestions to the White House, and never give up.

And, sometimes, if we have to, we shout. When we shout, we shout louder than they ever did.

That's how we change their minds........................

6. Yep. I think that's the only thing we can do. Keep doing what's right...
and hope for the best.

5. They need someone to hate
When Republicans are in charge, they can hate Ay-rabs, and other furreners, but Democrats and leeeeberals don't give them anyone to hate. So they have to direct their hate at the leeeeberals.

You are right, we must never be like them. They are miserable dung-flingers who only live to make other people more miserable. Maybe if they got more sex, they would be a happier lot, but there is that question that the great philosopher Carlin posed: "why are all the anti-abortion people ones you would never want to fuck in the first place?"

7. Hey, it's a numbers game. We don't have to convince everybody: we just have to convince
enough people. And most people aren't stupid: the corporate media wants most people to be stupid and won't do much to educate folk; the corporate media will give stupid people lots of attention and will try to convince us all that most people are stupid; but really -- most people aren't stupid. We can deal with the handful of stupid: we can keep them from shutting the rest of us down when we try to talk about real issues
