Officials: Up to 27 sick from Calif. beef recall

Friday, August 7, 2009

(08-07) 14:59 PDT Visalia, Calif. (AP) --

Health officials in three Western states say at least 27 people have reported illnesses tied to a recall of ground beef that may be tainted with salmonella.

On Thursday, Fresno-based Beef Packers Inc. recalled 825,769 pounds of ground beef produced June 5-23.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service says the beef was sent to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah.

The department said Friday that California, Colorado and Wyoming have reported illness that may be linked to the recall.

Recalled Beef Sold At Safeway And Sam's Club

SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP)

snip...
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service says Beef Packers Inc. is recalling 825,769 pounds of ground beef produced between June 5, 2009 through June 23.

The beef products bear the establishment number "EST. 31913" printed on case code labels.

The beef was distributed to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah. In Northern California, the beef was sold mostly in Safeway and Sam's Club stores, according to a list of retailers released by the state public health department. The USDA says because the beef was repackaged under different retail names, consumers should check with the store they bought beef from to determine if they've purchased any recalled beef.

1. And the solution is . . .
don't eat beef.

Or at least that's my solution. (Having just finished off 4 bananas as part of my evening meal of fruit.)

2. I am surprised these illnesses were even detected and traced, since
Ahnuld has gutted all state services, including public health.

Because god forbid we raise taxes on the top 2%, or collect any taxes at all from corporations.....

3. once again justifying my practice of never buying meat at Safeway
the internal branding of "Safeway Select" on their meat means nothing more, than that it is third-rate meat.

Prime
Choice
Select

nothing special about it. i even asked at the fancy-schmancy fake "butcher" counter at my local Safeway what the grade of the preciously-displayed meat in the case was, and it too is Select grade.

6. Sick, not dead.
But you are correct, it is a poorly written headline.
