Suppose Bush announced the withdrawal of US troops in Iraq

He makes the announcement that within 6 months, all US troops stationed in Iraq would be redeployed to another region of the world or come home. He doesn't give us details; sort of the "secret plan" scenario like Nixon in the 68 election.

So, would this skyrocket Chimp's approvals? I read Bosshog's thread about the Republicans scared to death about 08 because of Bush's disastrous administration. Would this give the Republican presidential candidate a good chance of winning in 08?

It just seems to me that there is a chance for Bush to somewhat redeem himself and his party. Everyone seems to be writing off the Republicans (and with justification) but it seems like one announcement of troop withdrawals would give a much needed boost to the Republican party. Bush, it seems, is hellbent on destroying his party.

2. The "push" for withdrawl would need to come from a repuke pres contender

if a repuke prez wannabe would be seen to push for this and eventually get Bush to do it, then it would help THAT guy and not the prez.

5. Gee, that strategy has not helped Hagel too much! Actually, they're

trapped like rats. They are stuck between 70 % of the general public who think Chimpy is an ass and the 30-percenters who vote in the GOP primary and think that Chimpy hasn't drawn enough blood. I think they won't push for withdrawal, but will start talking benchmarks and "soft" exit strategies for the undefined future--remember they have to kiss the Neocon ring, all of them, to get elected.

3. Here's my scenario for a GOP win

in 08, because right now it looks hopeless for them.

Cheney resigns because of health and they pick a squeaky clean new VP who runs during his "honeymoon" and gets in via unused capital, as the saying goes.

Otherwise, I don't see that they have put up any candidates that look interesting yet.

All of these take precedence over doing what's "right" for the Republican Party.

6. I Don't Think

GWB gives a RA about the Republican Party. He's a lame duck who isn't running again and doesn't need their help. His administration hasn't helped the Republicans so far. He's so stubborn that he wants us to do things his way no matter what till the end of his term.

I still think that the terms offered with the current appropriation should be maintained after any veto. The American Public must be shown that the money was approved but Bush chose to turn it down. I'm stubborn enough that I want Bush put in the uncomfortable position of seeing that it's his fault.
