For his second court nomination I'd like to see the president select an out and out liberal
who is an outstanding judge. Look, only 9 out of 40 repukes voted for Justice Sotomayor, who, I think, is a good choice and has a moderate record. If Sotomayor can get only NINE on there side then lets go all out and select a strong liberal. Of course it all depends on the timing of the next nominee and the numbers in the senate at the time.

2. Agreed
From a totally political gaming playing point of view look what President Obama has done with his first nomination. He has nominated and had confirmed a woman, a minority and a reasonably moderate to liberal justice to replace a moderate to liberal man. Here's where the game comes in, if the next justice to leave the court happens to be one in the conservative block Obama now has an open field as to who he appoints. It can be a man or woman, minority or not and if he wants to pick an out and out liberal they can't accuse him of trying to stack the court with nothing but strong liberals. They should already be looking for a jurist that has impeccable credentials so that the only thing the Republicans can try to hold against them is that they are 'liberal' or in their language 'an activist judge'. The Democrats in the Senate have to be brought into line before the next nomination is even made and the liberal jurist's confirmation should be pushed through whether any Republicans vote to affirm or not.

3. Amen to that.
My expectations for Justice Sotomayor are quite low unfortunately, given her actual record. I'd like someone whose record leaves no doubt next time, like a Larry Tribe or at least a younger version cut from the same cloth.

4. There really are not, and have not been, any liberals on the bench for quite a while.
The Dems are always placating the pukes, whether it is approving any reich-wing dirtbag like Alito or Roberts or Scalia or Thomas or putting milquetoast center-right judges up when they have a chance to nominate.

Just once, for Christ's sake, try and do something positive instead of doing something only slightly less negative than the thugs do. Please!

5. Did you see this?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_sotomayor_senate

"She replaces retiring Justice David Souter, a liberal named by a Republican president, and she is not expected to alter the court's ideological split."

Uh, David Souter was a moderate at best. And why is the Republican President (George HW Bush) not named? Typical bullshit from the Associated Press.

6. One would hope our numbers continue to increase in both Houses - and I agree with your comment.
