Oral arguments from Georgia Thompson's appeal
I was reading the comments over at TPMmuckraker ( http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/002981.php ) and found the following post; I recommend giving a listen to the link provided -- those judges really blistered the government's lawyer:

"Wow. Audio of Oral arguments from Georgia Thompson's appeal before the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals (released her that day) below. What a prosecution sham. h/t Kevin Drum at Washington Monthly

Nation (magazine, not the sheeple) has picked up on this and is asking the right questions. The Judges really worked over the poor tackling dummy the U.S. Attorney sent to court rather than going himself.

3. I'm kicking again...with a summary of the case against Thompson
from the oral argument

Thompson was the state procurement officer in a Dem administration. Adelman (sp) travel was the low bidder on the contract. Low bid does not always win, there are other factors. After those factors are considered another bidder scores slightly higher (6/1000 of a point...I think that's what they were saying) so Thompson meets with the 6 other people on the committee to award the contract and they agree to give it to Adelman because that is the in state company and she says it is state policy to favor instate companies whenever possible.

Thompson goes to jail. (Adelman gave some money to the gov...but not much...Thompson got a raise (I can't even BELIEVE they would have thought it was tit for tat but, fact is, the raise was recommended by someone else...someone not involved in the bid process and had been recommended ages ago. Oh, yeah, and Thompson doesn't know Adelman is a contributor to her boss.)

Case goes up on appeal, court of appeals orders her released from prison on the day of the oral argument (April 5, 2007) saying the evidence is beyond thin.

I work in state government. We favor in state companies...nothing wrong with that. Thompson was one of 7 votes to award the contract. I get raises occasionally.

This case stinks.

Have a listen at the link. Even if you're not a geek like me, you might be surprised at how interesting the argument is. Her attorney goes first but the best part is the grilling of the prosecutor by the 3 judges (2 are republican appointees.)
