Never Trust the Interns
Some American University undergrad was interning with the State Department
this summer and traveled with Condi’s security detail to Uruguay
in our effort “to convince them that we're cooler than Chavez.”

She has published her photos on the internets,
under the code name "FudgyPumpkin," along with
thoughtful commentary (“free Spring Break!”). We learn:

This is Plaza Indepencia, the main square in the heart of the city.
Its completely empty because only Americans with credentials were
allowed past those yellow gates you see in the background.
It was eerie to stand there in the silence. We sent about
1200 Americans for Bush's 36 hour visit and shut down the whole city.
It would be like President Vasquez coming to DC and shutting down
the Mall and 496. It must have been terrible for the residents who
couldn't get anywhere, no wonder they hate us.

More photos and fun here:

1. Hey. My niece is a State Dept intern in Paris. I don't know if she
posts on DU, though.

2. "we sent about 1200 Americans for Bush's 36 hour visit"
WTH?

On whose dime? And why?

(I hope it was the RNC's--not just because I'm a taxpayer but because it would be hilarious for them to have wasted that much money. And if it was the taxpayers who paid for it... is that legal?)
