Romney to push for more defense spending

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/2007-04-10-romney-defense_N.htm?csp=34

BOSTON (AP) —

Republican Mitt Romney believes the United States needs to increase its defense spending,
refocus its alliances on terrorism and reduce bureaucracy so U.S. organizations can do
good works across the globe.

In a speech prepared for delivery Tuesday night at the George Bush Presidential Library
and Museum in College Station, Texas, the GOP presidential candidate also was to call for
spending 4% of the nation's gross domestic product on defense, up from 3.9%.

In addition, he proposes adding 100,000 troops to the armed forces, according to excerpts
of his remarks supplied to The Associated Press.

"Today we face a new generation of challenges globally and here at home," Romney's text says.
"We will do as Americans have always done: We will rise to the occasion."

The speech comes as Romney aims to expand his foreign policy portfolio.

1. Let them get their cards on the table I suppose
I mean yeah, this is awful, but it sure makes it clear that if you vote Republican you are voting for war without end.

2. I love how they use the GDP numbers, and not the actual budget numbers
So people ( morons ) see 3.9% and think IS THAT ALL?

3. That math doesn't say what you're assuming it does.
I don't know what .1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) is, but it's a hell of a lot more than .1% of the Department of Defense's budget for the next fiscal year. I also don't know if his 3.9% number includes Iraq supplementals or not. That math would indicate an increase of 1/40th of the current budget which is um, large, isn't it? So at least 10 billion dollars. Is that enough to pay for that kind of increase? By itself, probably not.

That's the only thing I think of when I hear "Romney." He will forever be Yosemite Sam to me.

Beyond it being a bad idea, where are those 100,000 warm bodies going to come from? 3.9% of GDP doesn't sound right. Hmm, time to hit The Google.

Dude is flying so far off to the right he may end up in Singapore somewhere flapping his arms.

I think with him being an 'avid hunter', a chickenhawk, all we need now is some more gay-bashing and possibly an announcement that evolution should be outlawed and Bible classes will be taught in public schools. At that point, we may have us a winner.

6. Oh, yeah, right.
We need to have 2 million men under arms for the next decade, with 800,000 in Iraq at any one time. We need to partially nationalize industry to make the sinews of war, and we need to raise taxes to supporr the occupation effort.

Unless Romney is calling for that, he's just eye-deep in bullshit.

10. Of course, not a mumbling word about how 100K suckers - pardon - people
were going to be enticed into the armed forces. Please, oh please Mitt, say the magic word. It starts with 'd' and rhymes with craft. Please light that blowtorch and run giggling into the dynamite shed.
