In Bend today, heading to the lookout tomorrow with fear and trepidation.

The forest is super dry. The fire danger level is extreme. Lightning
is back in the forecast for Friday and the weekend. Even Nick-Nick's
buddy Jim Cantore, on the Weather Channel (The Hotel Dog-Sitting
Channel!), was talking about the potential explosive fire danger here
in central Oregon later this week. We shall see what we shall see ..
eh?

I'm not fearful of my situation. I'm fearful for the firefighters and
what might happen with a lot of lightning. But we will be back on
lightning code, which means lots of overtime. Firefighters love
overtime.

My thanks to EarlG for allowing my Deschutes NF fire dispatches in DU's GD Forum.

5. My cube is 15'X15' - I live in it! Sometimes with guests.
Bed, desk, cabinets, kitchen, Osborne Fire-Finder, drop-down plotting charts all in 15X15!

10. Looks wonderfully small & comfy, considering the vast expanse

that's in your care just beyond your humble living space. Thank you for your service to this great land you're looking after.

and sorry to be sounding corny, but, "these are 'the good ole days' " with every pleasure and with every angst.....

Take care out there (which I'm sure you do)

edit: spelling/grammar *sigh*

8. Yeah, I agree.
O/T on top of basic volunteer pay ain't great. I'm not out here for the money. But whatever it takes. The battalion commander calls and says to stay on until 10 pm, I say CAN-DO! I boil up a MRE, make a cup of tea, and look into the black void thinking all the while of my predecessor, Jack Kerouac!

9. I've lived in Oregon all my life, and I've only seen it like this once before.
August 1981.

There's a lot more beetle-killed pine (fire fuel) out there now than there was then.

It was 106 in Portland today, 108 in Medford.

But, the lightning thing -- dry lightning -- that's gonna make it interesting.

Stay safe, man. And dog.

14. ONE-HUNDRED-AND-EIGHT?! In OREGON??
yikes! How often does THAT ever happen?

We got nearly 4.4 inches of rain in 24 hrs (yesterday am through this a.m.) here in Okie-land, and it's only going up to the low 80s tomorrow. Strange stuff...

11. I just got back from 2 weeks in southern British Columbia,
east of the Cascades and it's extremely dry! The pine beetle infestation is so bad, a fire has the potential to be disastrous. We watched a dry lightning storm for 5 hours Friday night but I read it only caused one fire, which was contained. We saw helicopters in the distance, some with water baskets, some, we thought, looking for trouble spots.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you, Mac! Good luck!
