Question On Citizenship
Sorry, but I plead ignorance here. Can a person who is not a U.S. citizen become one by marrying a U.S. citizen? I know this exposes my stupidity, but I want to know, and I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.

1. not automatically
but they do become a legal resident unless there is a significant criminal problem or the marriage becomes suspect. They do still have to take the naturalization test but they don't have to wait the same number of years (they may not have to wait at all).

2. yes. Either by K-1 or K-2 visa or if you were already a resident.
I am a K-1 visa, because my wife and I had wanted to marry but she could not live in France due to her son being American and crying because there were no 24-hour drive-in Taco Bell (I shit you not).

You need to have a real relationship, have really met and spent time together for real. Note: they don't care if you met on the Internet or if you are a Russian bride, they look to see if the relationship is real, if you are an ok person and that's it. Takes time to fill the paperwork and then to get it processed.

Anyway we had to file for a K1 visa and I had to immigrate under it.

Funny story: the marshals at the airport gave me mean angry looks, like I was the male French equivalent of a Russian bride or something (my then fiancee and I had been dating for years on and off). I gave them mean angry looks as well, and one cracked up, the other did not. My wife said I was stupid. I did not know that people were so scared of the L.E. in the US.

There was nothing they could do anyway.

This was when we still had the INS. The only good thing the Bush administration did was revamp the INS, because it was really a big old mess, and DHS is much much better to deal with.

8. You can usually get a green card, and be put on a path to citizenship.
We're assuming there's no disqualifying aspect to the petitioner's background, mind. If you can't get a visa, for example, you can't become a citizen...
