I'm starting to think that the birth certificate nonsense is code talk for "He's Black"
Sure, there are a lot of suckers who really think that he's not a naturally-born citizen, but I'm starting to think that the "core" Birthers don't really believe the BS, they use it as racist code talk for "blacks aren't real Americans and shouldn't be president."

That's all it comes down to, is race. If not the Birth Certificate BS they would of found some other way to imply that he shouldn't be president because of his race. It's disgusting. :puke:

32. DING DING DING! Odin2005, you're our grand prize winner!
Of COURSE that's what it's all about! Saying "Blacks shouldn't be president" would be too OBVIOUS. But "Obama isn't really an American" sounds a lot more--SERIOUS. That's why it's so hard for them to face facts--even when the Obama-Gates-Crowley affair has literally handed them a "legitimate" racial issue.

Talking about birthers and Obama-Gates-Crowley serves another purpose--it prevents them from talking about health care reform. They don't want to do that because any public option will cost them health care industry advertising revenues.

35. They're pissed off that this -- insert racial epithet here --
is the president that they're channeling that rage into the only "acceptable" outlet they have. If they could get away with it, I think some of them would openly advocate for lynching him. What were those folks at the Palin rally saying? "Kill him, kill him, kill him."

36. I think it's more "he's foriegn" personally...
And his skin color is part of that for sure. His name is a lot of that as well. Also the fact that he's not African-American in the sense of most black Americans but Kenyan-American (as well as Irish and other, which the birthers generally ignore), with a lot of international creds as well.

Indeed, the only reason the birth certificate can be an issue is because of his percieved "foriegness". If he was African-American, they would be taking a different tact entirely.

Don't forget the religious connotations as well. Being a Muslim and whatnot.

I just feel the foriegn aspect is really the part being pushed, a general xenophobia, though race is part of that puzzle.

And, let's not forget this one that they had a lot of fun with...

Also, "Pallin' around with terrorists" was another dog whistle they used...

Remember http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjxzmaXAg9E?">these loons?

It was all intended to plant racist seeds about Obama in the minds of the already bigoted wingnuts and possibly brainwash along the way a few more who may have similar inclinations. There's lots of room in their racism tent.

Just because the election is over doesn't mean those seeds didn't germinate, as can be seen with the recent resurgence of the "birther" movement.

ETA: this post isn't aimed at the poster I was replying to, it's more of a general summation in agreement with the context.

And also he has too many connections with all those Bloody Foreigners (e.g. stepfather from Indonesia, and he lived there for a while; brought up in Hawaii which is full of non-whites and really *shouldn't* be part of the USA from the RW point of view!) so he can't be American. Someone like Dubya, who never travelled abroad before being president despite having plenty of money, and who certainly doesn't know any foreign languages, is much more their type!

I believe you got it 100% when you say it is code for "blacks aren't real Americans." I imagine a whole lot of folks were saying, "Obama's not a real American," before someone came up with the idea of disbelieving his birth certificate.

63. They do often reference the use of the word "African" to describe Obama Sr.'s race
Supposedly the common phrasing back in 61 would have been "Negro", as a parallel term for "Caucasian".
