Boosters pitch impeachment issue one last time

MONTPELIER — Members of Vermont's grassroots impeachment movement will meet with Vermont's top two Democrats on Wednesday in a final effort to push along legislation calling for President Bush's removal from office.

Supporters hope to convince House Speaker Gaye Symington, D-Jericho, and Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin, D-Windham, to put their political support behind a resolution asking the U.S. Congress to begin impeachment hearings against Bush.

Meanwhile, the issue has landed in about 1,400 newspapers across the country via the Doonesbury comic strip, which has tackled everything from the Watergate scandal to the Iraq War during its 35-year run.

Trudeau declined an interview Monday concerning the strip's foray into Vermont politics, but David Stanford, duty officer at the online Doonesbury Town Hall, said the plot line would be six days long and run through Saturday. "I'm not privy to everything that Garry is doing, but I do know that this storyline lasts the whole week," said Stanford, who added that he did not know how Trudeau heard about Vermont's impeachment movement.

Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! (ISBN 0-394-82490-3) is a children's book by Dr. Seuss. Written as a book for early beginning readers, it is suitable for children who can not yet read at the level of more advanced beginning books such as The Cat in the Hat. The book presents in short and funny fashion, Dr. Seuss's nonsensical words, rhymes, and illustrations. The gist of the book is that Marvin K. Mooney is asked to leave in many ways. The title is still in print.

Some have suggested that Dr. Seuss wrote Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! as a political allegory about Richard Nixon in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal. This is unlikely, as the book was originally published in August, 1972, only two months after the Watergate break-in in June. Suggesting he could have written, illustrated, and published a book in under 2 months in the 1970s is extremely unlikely; moreover, there was no evidence yet to tie the White House to the burglaries.

However, two years later, when Seuss was challenged by political columnist Art Buchwald for never having written a political book, Seuss took a copy of the book and crossed out "Marvin K. Mooney" and wrote in "Richard M. Nixon." Buchwald was so delighted, that with Seuss' consent he printed the text as his column for July 30, 1974. Nixon resigned nine days later on August 8.

Some of Seuss' other work, such as The Butter Battle Book, was clearly political.

My good friend Dr. Seuss wrote a book a few years ago titled "Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!" He sent me a copy the other day and crossed out "Marvin K. Mooney" and replaced it with "Richard M. Nixon." It sounded like fun so I asked him if I could reprint it. Please read it aloud.

the protests in Iraq were hailed by the loyal bushies as a sign of progress, that democracy has gained a foothold in the streets

yet - protests here are painted as the actions of traitors, accusations of not being patriotic and/or just plain partisan politics

Remember: We are fighting for democracy over there so we won't have it over here
