CREW files ethics complaint charges against Rep. Eric Cantor for taxpayer funded political org.

23 Jul 2009 // Washington, D.C. - Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has filed a complaint with the House Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) requesting an investigation into Rep. Eric Cantor’s recently created organization, the National Council for a New America (NCNA).

NCNA includes an informal member caucus made up of Republican members of Congress, and an associated advisory group consisting of current and former Republican governors and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). The group is operated by Rep. Cantor’s office, his staff organized the group and its initial town hall event and created its website, and his spokesman is listed as the group’s contact.

Rep. Cantor has asserted that NCNA’s purpose is to build and improve the Republican Party. Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) said the organization “will help those of us in Republican leadership positions build a Republican Party . . .” Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) described NCNA as “a caucus of Congressional leaders gathering the expertise of national leaders and doers in an effort to rebuild and rebrand the Republican Party.”

Hard-core partisans may try to defend Cantor's wrongdoing with the old Washington-insider claim that CREW is only attacking the congressman because he is a Republican.

Unfortunately for this "defense," CREW's other big project of the moment is lawsuit seeking records of visits by top health care executives to the White House -- the point of which is to determine "the extent to which these industry players may have influenced the administration's health care policy."

The bottom line: CREW really is nonpartisan.

Cantor, on the other hand, is not just partisan.

The congressman -- who rants and raves so regularly about fiscal responsibility -- appears to be raiding the federal treasury in order to fund his partisanship.

The Office of Congressional Ethics needs to open an investigation of Cantor's machinations.

And the congressman's constituents need to ask why, at a time when Cantor says the federal government does not have the money to pay for health care and education, it seems to have more than enough money to pay for the congressman's politicking.

4. If it really wanted to improve itself, the first thing the republics would do
is get rid of yuppified piles of poo like Cantor. I wonder if he's really as much an insufferable jerk as he always appears to be on camera.
