I'm not talking stepping down, or losing reelection even though your party still holds the majority.

What I'm wondering is if there has ever been a Senate Majority Leader, who while still holding his seat, was demoted by his own party members?

This piece of political history/trivia alludes me and I'm curious to find out about it.

2. Lott
Probably doesn't fit your criteria technically, since he sorta stepped down. But he was forced out, don't kid yourself. I'd have to find out why Mitchell replaced Byrd in '89. Coulda been age I suppose.

Going back sixty years, they were either defeated (Daschle), ran for another office (Johnson), or left the Senate for another job (Mitchell, Mansfield), or declined to be nominated in caucus (Byrd, in '89, who was at the time too old for the job -- became President pro tem, who is the oldest serving senator of the majority party), and chair of Appropriations instead.)

That goes back fifty years... others may do better.

4. you're implying that Reid doesn't have the support of his caucus
I don't think that's true. I know that some in the House have expressed frustration at Reid, but I haven't heard any Senator complain about him. The senators all know that there are factions within the caucus that any leader will have to deal with.

6. Nope. No agenda here.
However, the criticism of Reid is what inspired my query.

And I realized I had no idea. This is more of an intellectual exercize or discovery.

7. Yes. It happens. It's never admitted, but it happens.

9. It would mean that the Senators have some balls. The silence or
anonymous protests against Baucus's coup that is holding up the healthcare reform is sign that they do not.

There should be a speech every day concerning this by fellow Democrats.

Do not count of them demoting their majority leader, supported by Schumer who supposedly won 2 elections.
