Be advised: Anti-gay marriage group also opposes civil marriage for straights
A group of men from Pennsylvania is in Maine this week supporting the concept that marriage is between a man and woman.

The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property is based in Pennsylvania. This week the group is in Maine with signs and handouts about marriage.

The group says gay marriage is harmful to society because children do not have a mother and father. They also claim that marriages performed at City Hall, without God present, are not really marriages. However the group is not arguing that issue while in Maine.

Another country heard from. They are taking aim at any marriage without God involved.

2. This is actually a good thing

When people realize that they are saying you basically have to be a Christian in order to be considered married in their minds (I seriously doubt they would accept a marriage in other religious settings besides a Christian Church); the full extent of how ignorant and intolerant these people are becomes even more clear.

edited for not being able to complete a sentence prior to the second cup of coffee.

4. Jimmy Carter leaving the SBC was a great start. Now, we need more
mainstream pastors and leaders to throw that denomination off a cliff for being so illogical. (Wanting govt to make abortion illegal so more SSI taxpayers will be born is another plank in their lunatic platform.)

5. I wonder if they would accept a Quaker marriage?
Edited on Tue Jul-21-09 08:32 AM by Patiod
Since we don't have an authority marry us, but instead marry each other in the eyes of our congregation.

It made me sad when right wingers in Pennsylvania outlawed the concept of common law marriage, instituted 300 years ago because William Penn didn't believe people should have to pay a clergyman in order to be considered married.

Why the hell do I need ANY authority (civil or religious)to pronounce me married? Why can't my partner and I just say, in front of witnesses, "we're married" and sign some papers to make the lawyers happy later.

It worked for 300 years in Pennsylvania, and still works for the Quakers (in spite of nasty old bitches in county licensing departments that dont' want to issue Quaker marriage licenses, but that's another story).

3. Yeah, because God can't get into City Hall somehow.
Create the Universe - check.

Get into City Hall - Houston, we have a problem . . .

6. I think their name says it all. A group of white men that want to set the time back to when only
they could make decisions about their owned family and property.
