Published: July 17, 2009

The Montgomerie Links to open all 18 holes making a quantum leap in Vietnam's status as a luxury golf resort destination.

The Montgomerie Links Vietnam, the first 18-hole course to open in Vietnam outside the orbits of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, has announced the completion of its final four holes and informal opening, on Aug. 17. Grand Opening ceremonies are slated for March 2010.

Two-plus years in the planning, design, and construction, The Montgomerie Links brings a world-class layout to a country already booming as a golf destination. The project is unprecedented in several respects, beginning with the golf experience itself.

"The course will take its place with the best and best-known courses, not just in Asia, but around the world," said General Manager Jon Tomlinson. "It was a long time coming, but as they say, 'If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.' We expect golfers to find it was done to perfection. It's truly a one-of-a-kind venue."

1. Do they offer Dominoes comptitions in the club house?
The irony of our one time fearsome enemy that threatened to cause the end of western civilization now offering golf vacations to wealthy capitalists is overwhelming..and amusing.

2. The fitting comparisons of Afghanistan and Pakistan to Vietnam and Cambodia
can be made with this long view in mind: we're building golf resorts, not hearts and minds.

3. Vietnam - Never Should Have Been Our Enemy
After cooperating with the U.S. military during WWII against our common enemy Japan, Ho Chi Minh asked that the alliance continue after the end of the war. Instead, our government backed the French reoccupation of their colonies in Southeast Asia. The Vietnamese struggle for Independence continued for almost 40 more years; in victory against the French and finally in victory against the American military.

What a terrible waste. I still weep when I visit the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C.

I visited Vietnam in January 2009. I found a country at peace. I found people with goals of starting their own business and getting rich. Yes, the communist flag was displayed everywhere but the hard core communists bent on expanding their sphere of influence right up to the shores of our country were no where to be found. (Maybe they never existed in the first place.)

Instead the big news was about a new casino opening in Hanoi.

5. Will Ho Chi Minh's tomb be an obstacle?
He's embalmed like Lenin and Mao right? If so, they can make a hole where you have to shoot the ball between this opening/closing legs.
