By the time Mr. Rather was leaving the “CBS Evening News” in 2005 after 24 years at the anchor desk, Mr. Cronkite had abandoned mincing words. He criticized his successor as “playing the role of newsman” rather than being one. Mr. Rather should have been replaced years earlier, he said.


I hope they were able to resolve their differences. Dan has nothing but praise and respect for him tonight... I have been happy to see MSNBC using Dan so much lately.
