Prehistoric dwelling unearthed at Isle of Man Airport
Source: IOM Today
By ADRIAN DARBYSHIRE

A PREHISTORIC dwelling – 3,000 years older than Stonehenge – has been unearthed during construction of the runway extension at Isle of Man Airport.

Dating back an astonishing 8,000 years to the time when the first human settlers returned to the Isle of Man after the end of the Ice Age, it is probably the oldest dwelling ever found in the Island.

Featuring the foundations of a strongly-built shelter, filled and surrounded by thousands of pieces of worked flint, the charred remains of wood, and hundreds of hazelnut shells, the major archaeological find is certain to make headlines around the world.

It has been unearthed as fieldwork at Ronaldsway nears completion, with diggers due to finish excavating in the middle of ths month and the project on schedule to be completed by the end of the year.

1. This is a Major Find

I also recently read that the Channel has been mapped in detail and it was likely an excellent area for habitation before it was submerged.

"Merrie Olde" is turning out to be a veritable archeologist's playground.

3. Yes, I remember an article about submerged sites in the channel.
More and more of the Paleolithic is being discovered in England; and in many other places, it seems.

32. The Thames and the Rhine
both flowed into the Channel river. Back in the day, you could walk from Dublin to Helsinki. Trawlers have been pulling up artifacts of human settlement from the Dogger Banks for over a century.

10. Funny how all the literalists miss that.
Bishop Usher was the culprit for starting all that 6,000 year old Earth garbage.

23. Usher based the date on the literal interpretation of the Bible.
It's not like the Bible isn't full of that sort of bullshit.

26. He used the "begats" and stated life spans. I believe he even pegged it to the exact day and hour.
Pretty amazing for the Usher dude to be able to do that. Can't be sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the old bishop didn't have a lively imagination.

11. Um...I *was* kidding you understand?
I guess sarcasm is tough to convey online, as blatant as I tried to make it (6000 years, 8000 years and all that??? not funny? no sarcasm there evident? even in the fossil record? :p)...

I guess I'll have to use :sarcasm: next time.

My bad!

12. here on GD it is necessary much of the time to INDICATE
when you are intending humor in some form in your post.

People tend to be quite serious here, you see, and many would not recognise humor if it bit them on the ass. (joke)

However, I thank you for your effort.

15. It's due to a corollary of Poe's law..
http://rationalwiki.com/wiki/Poe%27s_Law

""Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won't mistake for the real thing""

That goes for practically everything else too, it's impossible to create parodies of a lot of things that SOMEONE won't mistake for the real thing.

After you've been online for a while you get to see people seriously saying things you think quite mad, it definitely takes the edge off your snarkdar (snark detection and rating).

I've been online for a LONG time, believe me.

But I guess I was just assuming that *my* brand of "over the top" would work (appreciate the notion that ANY over the top is liable to be repeated elsewhere as "sincere" lmao!! so true!).

24. Please don't take it to heart...
I find that type of post consistently shows up in any discussion of archaeological finds dating before 4004 BC; I recognize the humor in them, and I think most others do also. They have become so consistent that I usually just pass them by; had I noticed how new you are to DU, I would have acknowledged the joke, and put you at ease.

Despite what you may read otherwise, I think most people get the humor/sarcasm since you obviously aren't making an argument for a young earth/biblically based construction of origins or ancient history. Some topics practically require some type of smiley for the humor impaired, it seems; too bad, as I find that icon detracts from any sophistication in humor.

DU is a great place to interact with others on a multitude of topics, and I welcome you to DU!

38. Anyone know of a website that shows a decent detail of sea depths for a chart?
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 07:21 AM by muriel_volestrangler
I found one, about a month ago, when I was looking for stuff about 'Doggerland' - the area under the North Sea that was the last part linking England to the European continent as dry land (and from which artefacts are occasionally dredged up). But I forgot to bookmark it, dammit.

I'm trying to find out how much lower the sea level would have had to be for the Isle of Man to be linked to Scotland or England (I'm pretty sure it'd be linked to them before Ireland - the Wikipedia Irish Sea page shows deeper water to the west of the island).

This site thinks Ireland would have been joined by a land bridge to Scotland which would have existed after the ice of the last Ice Age retreated, but before the sea level rose too much. I'm trying to work out if that would be a likely way for these people 8,000 years ago, or if they'd have had to get there by boat. The Wikipedia chart (if accurate) would seem to say it'd be easier to reach the Isle of Man than Ireland, from Britain.
