of the size of the severance package - so said the gurus on GEM$NBC and note this part of the link

The statement was issued on the same day that a watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, called for the Department of Justice to investigate news reports that Ensign had made an out-of-pocket payment to Cynthia Hampton, and whether such a payment violated federal campaign finance rules because it was not reported.

“None of the gifts came from campaign or official funds nor were they related to any campaign or official duties,” Coggins said. “Senator Ensign has complied with all applicable laws and Senate ethics rules.”

<snip>
Sen. John Ensign ’s parents gave $96,000 to a former campaign staffer with whom he had an extramarital relationship and her family, his attorney said Thursday, denying that the payments violated campaign finance laws or Senate ethics rules.

“The payments were made as gifts, accepted as gifts and complied with tax rules governing gifts,” lawyer Paul Coggins said.

Coggins said Ensign’s parents “decided to make the gifts out of concern for the well-being of long-time family friends during a difficult time” after learning about the affair.

6. Looks like Ensign is saying that the parents paid this
because of the size of the severance package - gifts given in !2,000 packages to prevent legal problems - this is getting very serious!!

We knew this story had teeth. Resign Ensign!!!

41. Check out Coburn's concern
And Coburn accused reporters of helping tear apart two families.

“You’ve got two families that are back together and you guys are going to help tear them apart,” Coburn said. “What do you think their kids think about what you’re writing right now? You’re helping tear two families apart that are back together. You need to quit. It’s all manipulation.”

43. Show him Coburn's comment about recent disclosures
He'll laugh even louder

And Coburn accused reporters of helping tear apart two families.

“You’ve got two families that are back together and you guys are going to help tear them apart,” Coburn said. “What do you think their kids think about what you’re writing right now? You’re helping tear two families apart that are back together. You need to quit. It’s all manipulation.”

Now how did he come to that conclusion given the latest details related to 'following the money'.

From the CQ link.

44. I did!!! Our dinner was about 45 minutes later than planned because
we were having such a good time....thanks to Ensign and Coburn.

Cobern's attack is very lame....I am stunned that all the adult age people involved came to the conclusion that money would make everything go away (if only Ensign had cooperated!) and wouldn't be found out. I'm beginning to think candidates for office should undergo psychological testing before they are allowed to run.

i believe it's called EXTORTION

Marriage

In 1998, after President Bill Clinton admitted to having committed adultery with Monica Lewinsky, Ensign called on him to resign, saying, "He has no credibility left."<22>

In 2004, Ensign spoke on the Senate floor in favor of the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have barred states from recognizing same-sex marriage. Ensign said:

Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and

the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation.<23>
