RIP: Critical Thought on DU
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 03:11 PM by FLAprogressive
Any post that does not 'toe the line' so to speak will be immediately "unrecommended" by the operatives.....now the greatest page will be filled with cheerleader threads, just how the All Star Cheerleaders want it.

I guess some people are just sick of the truth and just want to see sunshine, puppies, and rainbows.....my my my how DU has changed.

"unrec" this all you want.

7. The "Greatest Page" will be filled with threads that represent the majority of DU opinion

Instead of how it previously only represented those who shouted the loudest.

If you're "outside of the mainstream" of DU opinion, why do you think you should be on the greatest page?

If a freeper disruptor posts a pro-Palin thread, and five other freeper disruptors recommend it... why should it get on the Greatest Page?

110. No, not "silence"--simply "refuse to elect"--that IS how democracy works.
We don't give the clowns with the fewest votes the job--when the system works right, anyway.

Your thread won't get the spot on the "greatest" page, if most of us don't think it's all that great.

Five people with a halfassed viewpoint won't purport to represent the vast majority here.

You can continue to blab away all you want--you simply won't be able to do it from center stage unless you get the audience to applaud your efforts.

23. Your example is non-sensical
Rather if you are more moderate than the mainstream DU you will be accused of being a freeper and recommended down; or if you are more liberal /leftist than the mainstream. That is the concern.

Most "freepers" aren't necessarily, and the ones that are usually get caught pretty quick.

bashers.

The "Greatest Page" will pretty accurately reflect DUers current opinions of Obama.

If the current approval of him on DU is under 50%, then the BASHING threads will be the ones that make the Greatest Page.

58. I'd be willing to bet you dollars to donuts that there's a percentile of threads...
that are rec'd with little more effort than that the rec'er appreciates the OP on a bumper-sticker-level as in, "That's a cool bumper-sticker" or a level that doesn't even require them to have read, or per se agree with the post; maybe just maybe because they like them or maybe just because they *want* to be liked by either them or their associates enter via 'unrecommend' the ability to drive down the stock like MadMoneyKramer on other products by 'cheer-leading up' products one is more comfortable with = it's The Pepsi Challenge = Coke or Pepsi = "No Coke!! Pepsi!" and maybe that's fine...

I don't drink Pepsi myself, though I will drink Dr. Pepper in a world where it only takes 5 rec's to get Pepsi on the Greatest Page :kick:

100. Did you ever look at the "Greatest Page" in the past couple months?
70% of the posts were knee-jerk, poorly-written, barely-reasoned "criticism" of Obama that had often very little basis in fact and policy.

For example, all the people who scream about Obama giving tax cuts to the rich are just damned liars. There have been no such cuts. However, they get a lot of recommends.

Of course, it takes time and effort to actually look at the forum front pages, read through the subject lines, figure out which ones might be interesting and which ones are crap (most of 'em). Now if you have a particular viewpoint that needs a more protective umbrella where members can meet and exchange their views without the scruitiny of harassment of the entire community you could start a sub group especially for promoting that particular view point as dozens and dozens of other DUers have.

46. And what happens if the majority of DUers DISapprove of Obama?
Then the only threads that make it to the Greatest Page will be from the "bashers".

See how it works? The greatest page will accurately reflect the majority of opinion on DU, whatever it is at the moment.

This should only piss you off if you're outside of DU mainstream. And that "mainstream" is constantly shifting.

If Obama's popularity falls, only bashing threads will make it to the Greatest Page.

...and that will make you very happy, I guess.

29. I think there are as many bashers as there are cheerleaders
on the board. So it will probably balance out in the end. In fairness, I would expect the greatest page of a democratic site to feature plenty of support for a democratic administration, but at the same time I also expect a healthy amount of constructive criticism as well as outright "the President is wrong" posts when the situation warrants.

What exactly do you think is going to happen? Your thread gets unrecommended and suddenly the black helicopters descend on your house, taking you off to Room 101?

To what level has the whine factor gone for some to believe being able to express a displeasure with a thread is somehow an erasure of critical thought?

You know what this does? It affects the listing of topics on the Greatest Page.

In what way does the fact that some threads won't be showing up on the Greatest Page now stifle critical thought? Be specific please.

Because your explanation makes not a shred of sense.

The "unrecommend" feature does nothing but reduce an thread starter post's "score" to determine whether it will show on the Greatest page, so-called.

Are you somehow claiming that those of us who never have posts recommended to the Greatest page are being chased away? Should I have left a long time ago and just was too stupid to realize it?

Deargod, this one of the most bizarre collections of whiners I have ever managed to come across.

What you're really for a route to EVERYONE'S greatest page that requires:

(a) Only a very few need to support it

That's what you call "diversity of opinion".

65. I'm curious to see, after 24 hours,
to what degree the threads on the greatest page start aligning with stories and views in the mainstream media, vs. DU's strong point, which is shining light on those stories that slip under the radar in the Friday night news dump.

I suspect threads that tend to support those in power will see more visibility, and those that cause us to question the status quo will become less visible, but I hope I am proven wrong.

not want anyone recommends to me, or is that too difficult?

straight to the Forum page. I don't get what the big deal is. Who cares how many recs a thread has?

99. I suppose that's why all the posts prior to this with the most recommends were knee-jerk
flame bait about how Obama was a Reagan-in-disguise, homophobic, torturing, jack-booted, fascist?

104. Paranoia strikes deep......
"Toe the line?"

"Operatives?"

"My, my, my, how DU has changed?"

I thought "change we can believe in" was a GOOD thing!

Things that stay the same, to my mind, are rotting.

This is a discussion board. If the quality of your discussion sucks, you'll know about it. I should think this new feature would help all of us do a better job in formulating an argument.

I think I will "unrec" this, because it sounds, to my ear, like a petulant whine. Also, I really like the "unrec" feature because it stops five bullies from putting unrepresentative crap that most of us think is absolute bullshit on the greatest page.

But thanks for giving me "permission!"

115. This was more true with the "recommend" only feature.
Many critical posts sink because of the tripe that made it to the top of the greatest page.

122. That's the way I'm looking at it.
I don't know how it will pan out, but I think this feature gives people the ability to disapprove of supercilious nonsense to the benefit of serious issue-oriented discussions.

120. I said this in jest in another thread, but it's based in truth and honesty...
...I could give a flying fuck about popularity.

There are people on DU I like very much, and I'm confident that they know who they are.

There are people on my ignore list, and I'm sure I'm on a few as well.

And then there's everyone else.

I'm a member of this site, I do my best to follow the rules, I enjoy making people laugh (assuming that I ever accomplish that) and I try to post actual political discourse as well.

As I said in the aforementioned thread, my advice to people who don't "get" me is to "bite" me. Pure and simple. I don't seek popularity and I don;t need to be understood. People with those needs are only flaunting their weakness.

:patriot:
