| RIP: Critical Thought on DU |
 |
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 03:11 PM by FLAprogressive
Any post that does not 'toe the line' so to speak will be immediately "unrecommended" by the operatives.....now the greatest page will be filled with cheerleader threads, just how the All Star Cheerleaders want it.
I guess some people are just sick of the truth and just want to see sunshine, puppies, and rainbows.....my my my how DU has changed.
"unrec" this all you want.

If you're "outside of the mainstream" of DU opinion, why do you think you should be on the greatest page?
If a freeper disruptor posts a pro-Palin thread, and five other freeper disruptors recommend it... why should it get on the Greatest Page?

We don't give the clowns with the fewest votes the job--when the system works right, anyway.
Your thread won't get the spot on the "greatest" page, if most of us don't think it's all that great.
Five people with a halfassed viewpoint won't purport to represent the vast majority here.
You can continue to blab away all you want--you simply won't be able to do it from center stage unless you get the audience to applaud your efforts.

Rather if you are more moderate than the mainstream DU you will be accused of being a freeper and recommended down; or if you are more liberal /leftist than the mainstream. That is the concern.
Most "freepers" aren't necessarily, and the ones that are usually get caught pretty quick.

70% of the posts were knee-jerk, poorly-written, barely-reasoned "criticism" of Obama that had often very little basis in fact and policy.
For example, all the people who scream about Obama giving tax cuts to the rich are just damned liars. There have been no such cuts. However, they get a lot of recommends.

Then the only threads that make it to the Greatest Page will be from the "bashers".
See how it works? The greatest page will accurately reflect the majority of opinion on DU, whatever it is at the moment.
This should only piss you off if you're outside of DU mainstream. And that "mainstream" is constantly shifting.
If Obama's popularity falls, only bashing threads will make it to the Greatest Page.
...and that will make you very happy, I guess.

What exactly do you think is going to happen? Your thread gets unrecommended and suddenly the black helicopters descend on your house, taking you off to Room 101?
To what level has the whine factor gone for some to believe being able to express a displeasure with a thread is somehow an erasure of critical thought?
You know what this does? It affects the listing of topics on the Greatest Page.
In what way does the fact that some threads won't be showing up on the Greatest Page now stifle critical thought? Be specific please.

The "unrecommend" feature does nothing but reduce an thread starter post's "score" to determine whether it will show on the Greatest page, so-called.
Are you somehow claiming that those of us who never have posts recommended to the Greatest page are being chased away? Should I have left a long time ago and just was too stupid to realize it?

It just stayed at zero.
Curious too. I would think any system should have as much potential either way. Looks like the fucking tweed hat democrats won another one and will cause further division based on stupid and unrealistic ideals.
You are right. There are several networks of operatives on DU. I will mention the "gun enthusiasts" as one, but I will not mention any others. The price is too high for doing so.

So you are afraid that only pro Obama voices will be on the front page and no criticism?
My advice and I know you didn't ask for it is to take a deep breath and realize change is part of being alive go with the flow and see how this works out rather than decide it's all terrible without giving it a chance to see how it works.

It will all be "majority rule" when it comes to the greatest page....seeing only what the "majority" wants us to see.

What you're really for a route to EVERYONE'S greatest page that requires:
(a) Only a very few need to support it (b) Those who oppose it have no say, no matter how many they may be.
That's what you call "diversity of opinion".
Tell me more lies. Please.

to what degree the threads on the greatest page start aligning with stories and views in the mainstream media, vs. DU's strong point, which is shining light on those stories that slip under the radar in the Friday night news dump.
I suspect threads that tend to support those in power will see more visibility, and those that cause us to question the status quo will become less visible, but I hope I am proven wrong.

seems to me, the threads shredding Obama make it to the greatest page.
I haven't been going there, cuz I'm sick of it.
I'm cheering for him to do his best under some very dire conditions. Not much is going well these days - anywhere, everywhere - sea, land, air, rights, foreign policy, economy.... you name it.

the tone has gotten rather nasty, not just here, but everywhere - TV, radio, print, space - I'm aware of most of the complaints and criticisms. - I'm not happy about many things too, but I'm taking a bit of a break from hating the president by not responding to each and every thread that tears him apart.
Besides, these days, I'm focused on one thing.
Health care for all.

I thought "change we can believe in" was a GOOD thing!
Things that stay the same, to my mind, are rotting.
This is a discussion board. If the quality of your discussion sucks, you'll know about it. I should think this new feature would help all of us do a better job in formulating an argument.
I think I will "unrec" this, because it sounds, to my ear, like a petulant whine. Also, I really like the "unrec" feature because it stops five bullies from putting unrepresentative crap that most of us think is absolute bullshit on the greatest page.
But thanks for giving me "permission!"

...I could give a flying fuck about popularity. There are people on DU I like very much, and I'm confident that they know who they are. There are people on my ignore list, and I'm sure I'm on a few as well. And then there's everyone else. I'm a member of this site, I do my best to follow the rules, I enjoy making people laugh (assuming that I ever accomplish that) and I try to post actual political discourse as well. As I said in the aforementioned thread, my advice to people who don't "get" me is to "bite" me. Pure and simple. I don't seek popularity and I don;t need to be understood. People with those needs are only flaunting their weakness.
