I'm enjoying the Michael Jackson memorial.
As a fan of MJ's I think it's pretty good.

Great music and heartfelt tributes.

3. Agreed. I was prepared to turn it off if it was exploitative or tacky. But
it's seemed very sincere and respectful.

7. That's an understatement

What was very touching was how she snuggled up to Auntie Janet while Marlon was speaking.

31. It was amazing...just think we've only even seen these kids faces a few times in public...
without masks on.

It really made it more real and made him seem more human than some world famous musician or some weirdo. Just a kid who's lost her Dad. That was really brave of her especially with all the sh*t they've been through in their lives and what they'll still go through the rest of their lives.

24. No kidding! And Welcome to DU, btw. It was really nicely done.
Elegant, tasteful, tuneful, well-orchestrated, everyone in the crowds anywhere the TV cameras were pointed was equally elegant and tasteful and well-behaved. No assholes. Most welcome to see. Really kinda classy. I liked it. Heck, I can remember the last time a big funereal orgy stopped this city cold (I live in L.A.), which was the whole ronald reagan orgy. It was a never-ending plague, nauseating and maudlin and it dragged on for a week. That was almost unbearable. You couldnt get away from it. EVERY flag everywhere was at half-staff for like a month or something. There was no relief, and it centered on a man whom I could not, in good conscience, celebrate. This, on the other hand, I can sit through and enjoy.

14. I was watching it on line.
The tvs may have been cut by this time but some of Michael's family members were up on stage and they started taking the microphone and making tributes to him. Well, his daughter took the mic and said he was the best dad and she started sobbing. It was awful. I think Aunt Janet pulled her out of there.

15. I just saw the video clip of the casket being brought in. I thought the way
they had the stage lights set up to look like stained glass windows at a church was perfect. Helped to keep the focus on the solemn occasion and not seem like entertainment.

Great comments by Al Sharpton and...everybody, really. There wasn't a cringe moment at all, except that it was hard to watch people trying to hold it together as they spoke.

18. As a non-fan, I'm very pleasantly surprised - I thought it would be tacky and garish
I think it struck a good balance between mournful remembrance and a life celebration.

25. I have never been an MJ fan ~~ never liked or disliked him.
Edited on Tue Jul-07-09 02:59 PM by Hepburn
But I do have to say that I totally enjoyed his memorial service. I know that is most likely an odd thing to say, but it was beautifully done ~~ respectful and nothing even remotely garish or Vegas like. Those who spoke seemed to speak from their hearts. Many were moved to tears or near tears. Paris, JM's daughter, tore me up. The talented people who sang and/or played were absolutely marvelous. Even Mariah Carey who I usually cannot stand. She even sounded good today, IMO.

This was extremely well done. A very fitting tribute to a very talented person.

and her mentioning Michael's favorite song written by Charlie Chaplin, "Smile," that Germaine then sung.

I must say that MJ's daughter tore me up. I couldn't hold it in longer after she spoke.

to the youngest brother.

There was also a lot of information I didn't know about Michael. He would have been proud, even if it wasn't all choreographed due to the time they had.

not just the icon. We lost a great musician, but his family and friends lost a father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. I was very touched.
